Do you still need a vent pipe leading up to the roof from the sink (or toilet) drainage pipe? (the white pipe going up to the roof).

Yes, most drains require a vent for each fixture, like a toilet or sink.

Thanks for your video, my house is a single level flat house, the 2 toilet flushing ok but the water level in the bowls are a bit low, I think it wouldn’t be the cistern problem as when I slowly pouring water into the bowls the water level are not raising up. Meanwhile the sewer in bathroom are a bit smelled. Do you think it could be sewer vent issue? Thank you very much.

You have an interesting problem that I would need a lot more information before make suggestions. Pouring water into the toilet bowl allows it to go out of toilet and into drain. Are you suggesting that at one time the toilet water level was higher and if so email me some pictures so I can take a look.

Hi @Greg, nice video. I'm renovating an old house and adding a bathroom. At your 25 second mark you made a very casual comment I need to vet further. You said you would not add the bathtub, washing machine, or kitchen sink. I'm hoping to do exactly that with a 3" wet vent. I'm trying to get instruction from my building inspector but havent heard back yet. The 3" pipe would provide drainage for a washing machine, a shower, a sink, and a toilet. I don't want to have to poke another hole in the roof if I don't have to. Does this plan sound feasible? The vent thru the attic is only 2". Come to think of it I'm not sure where the other bathroom or kitchen sink vent to but there is only the one pipe thru the roof.

Check with local building codes, but most 3 inch vertical pipes can be used to install more fixtures than a two inch pipe.
@tchevrier
@tchevrier 8 ай бұрын
You always need to vent every single fixture. Those vents need to be within a certain distance of the size of the pipe used for those traps. If the vent is too far away (too low) then it will syphon the trap. A wet vent is simply a vent that is also used by another fixture to drain waste water.

I noticed in my home the sink drain went throught the trap and then horizontal a couple feet then down to the larger drain pipe. In the horizontal section there was corrosion...can that section be installed at an angle to avoid the standing water in it? Seems like theyre always installed horizonal.
@gregvancom
@gregvancom Жыл бұрын
It might not be to code. I do have other videos on this, but it usually can't slope more than a quarter inch per foot.
@tchevrier
@tchevrier 8 ай бұрын
horizontal pipes need to have a slope of 1/4" per foot. It's not a lot to the naked eye, but its actually optimal for waste water systems. Sloping it more will have a negative affect on your vent and will likely syphon your trap. Where the horizontal section drops to a larger drain pipe there should also be a vent.

There are building codes that only allow a certain amount of fixtures on certain sized vents. A three inch vent will allow more fixture connections than a smaller sized vent.

I have just built a new home and my plumber connected the kitchen and bathroom pipes to the sewer drainage pipes to drain into the sewer tank. My concern is that water will fill up too fast in the sewer tank and drain out alot of water into the waste landfill. What are your thoughts? Note: The plumbing is downhill and not on flatland.

Doesn’t a wet vent also have to do with up sizing a drainage/waste pipe to allow more air in it, so you don’t have to put a vertical vent pipe up to the roof for an additional fixture?
@gregvancom

Yes, you can only put a specific amount of drainage fixture units according to the size or diameter of a drainage pipe. This will also affect venting these fixtures.

What's the difference between a wet vent sized with 2018 IPC Table 912.3 and combination waste and vent system sized with 2018 IPC Table 915.2.2 ?
@gregvancom
@gregvancom Жыл бұрын
My understanding is that the first one 912.3 would apply to the example in this video and the 915.2.2 is for a horizontal drain that would allow more fixtures to drain into it horizontally before turning up and going out the roof.

If I'm running the sink or bathtub at full volume, wouldn't that effect the flush on the toilet because the water from the sink is blocking the air from the vent ?

It can, if the pipes are older and partially clogged, but if they are designed correctly, can easily handle more than one fixture draining into the waste pipes at the same time.
@joshkar24

so the crux of the matter is that when you have two fixtures with only one vent servicing them, they need to be stacked up in order to form a wet vent rather than one or both of them being located horizontal to some vent?

I would need more details. What does a twisted below 45 mean?
@jackovoltraids5937
@jackovoltraids5937 2 жыл бұрын
@@gregvancom I forget the exact terminology, but I guess Rotated would be more applicable word than twisted. As in rotating around the center of the lateral drain pipe/fitting. Drain, waste, and vent plumping is not my specialty, but a pipe that Only vents can connect with a 90° sanitary tee pointing straight upward(or within 45° from that). A 90° tee most be rotated so it points to the side of the lateral(by rotating between 45° and 90° from when it's pointing straight up). That's because the inside of a tee doesn't have a continuous sloping wall directing the waste in the proper direction while maintaining steady flow. It should never be a sanitary tee on it's back unless it's only used for venting. However, whatever the tee fitting it is, if a junction receives waste water, it won't facilitate the flow direction and necessary velocity if there's suddenly a point it drops into open air and hits the bottom of the pipe. By not maintaining a continuous pipe wall to act as a path for the WW, it robs the momentum and can lead to damage or clogs. Hence why it's only vent pipes may be used pointing up. 1) Straight lateral pipe: _________________ →→→→→→→→ _________________ 2) Vent only junction of lateral pipe: ______| ↓ |______ →→→→ →→→→ __________________ 3) Wet vent junction of lateral pipe: ______| ↓ |______ →→→→↓↑ → → ___________________ (flow directions ”→” ”↓”) The 2nd and 3rd examples are both with tees pointing upwards, whether sanitary, long sweep 90, or whatever, they only differ in that the 2nd shows no reduction of flow rate because it only vents. Thusly no solid or liquids drop down and hit the bottom of the pipe or interrupt the flow of something traveling along it. The 3rd example shows a reduction of flow rate and the opposite direction of force which reduces momentum. Even if it's a combination wye and 45° elbow, I think it's treated as the same thing. Does that make sense? Rather, I know how it all works does make logical sense, but whether I've explained it well enough for others to understand is what I'm asking. Because I feel like I made up half of that since I'm not an actual plumber and I'm going off my memory regarding code and also off my reasoning for how waste water flows in a pipe. I mean it's not something I do professionally or with any frequency nor am I as highly educated as say Neil DeGrass Tyson. I might be wrong in my understanding that **it flows downhill. I'd say a cliff doesn't let *it flow downhill as much as rain down hell if you're below and unlucky to be the bottom of the pipe....
