What animal is best for homesteading? If you could only have one animal on your homestead, what should it be?
We answer this question in a collaboration with 3 other homesteading channels...
Arms Family Homestead -
/ darms319
Lumnah Acres - / @lumnahacres
Keeping It Dutch - / colt40farns
If you were only going to have one animal on your homestead, it should be a COW!
Cows are an incredible animal. They are capable of turning grass into milk, meat, and fertilizer. The milk that a good jersey cow gives is rich in cream, which then can be used to make butter, cheese, or enjoyed as cream!
There is such a variety of products that one cow can give...
But keeping a family cow is a lot of work! And in todays video we explore how much work a family cow is through the eyes of someone who isn't used to the work involved... ME!
K does the daily cow chores in our family, but today I get dirty milking a cow, and see if I still think that a cow is best!

About 3 years ago I got really sick and I fell into a deep depression so I started gardening and then I got chickens then pigs and it just make me happy and give me motivation and a since of purpose. Thanks for the awesome video and please keep making them you guys are an amazing family and teachers.

I watched all 4 of the "best homestead animal" cooperative vids. And, I learned a lot. I think the best advice I gleaned from all of them is that the "best" animal for YOUR homestead is the one that satisfies the most of YOUR needs. And that conclusion helps me a lot to realize that whatever choices I make in animal selection are subject only to MY desires and needs. In other words, there is no real right or wrong choice. And that'a a good thing.

I let my wife do the milking and I wash the jars. Our Jersey gives us so many products like cream for coffee, butter, ghee, cheese, buttermilk, etc. The excess skim and leftovers go to the hogs or fertilize the garden. We even use milk and blackstrap molasses for pest control on our garden and our bees LOVE it. Great videos!

This is one of the best KZfaq collaboration videos I have ever seen...You guy's humor is awesome and your honesty and humorous presentation of the problems involved with cows is just awesome. You did a great job representing the cow people...You guys had me laughing thru the whole video - Everything was so true and fairly presented!! You forgot about NO Vacations, Every Day 2x/day. the best part was having a wife to take care of the cow side of the business. Very nice job. BEST VIDEO OF THE YEAR!!

Snicker, don’t forget the hide of the cow after it’s been butchered plus sheep and goats can be sheered for wool which can be turned into yarn to knit into all kinds of things. Plus a goat or sheep would be a good starter animal if you are just beginning, it’s what I am going to do whenever I have the money to get land enough have a homestead/hobby farm.

Ah, I wish we could own a cow. Due to my milk allergies we won’t own one, no matter how delicious :( . Watching your wife gently guide you through the milking process was a lot of fun! I did the same thing but helped my husband butcher his first rabbit. Our favorite animal to raise is rabbits, actually! We love them because they don’t take up too much space. We grow everything in our backyard behind a shed. Our livestock have to stay small for a while until we can own bigger property, haha! You guys are becoming one of my favorite channels to watch! Best of luck!

This is going to be a great collaboration! We hope to get a cow this year; for all the reasons you mentioned. However, I have to put in a plug for our goats (and why we'll always have at least 2 does in milk) : Goat milk soap; cow milk turns soap orange. Soft herbed goat cheeses (amazing stuff), and the Kefir. Yes, cows milk kefir is ok, but goat milk kefir is just dreamy. Still, for drinking I only consume our goats milk when it's up to 3 days old (we get an extra day because our Oberhasli's produce super sweet, creamy milk thats not at all 'goaty' - for the first three days. Then it starts to develop that tinted flavour). I have made the goat butter. Good, but not like cultured jersey butter, which to me is a super food! Oh, and thank you for the humour :-) :-) :-). P.s. to relieve the strain on your hands when milking, periodically let your hands go limp and give them a good shake. It really helps me anyway :-)

Goats. More versatile. Milk, meat, brush and land clearing, pack animals, not as hard to handle, easier to clean up after, (I'd rather clean goat poop than cow poop ;) )easier to handle, require less space. Lb for Lb a goat eats less but produces more milk. My saanen doe gives a gallon and a half a day by herself. Can't beat a goat! Go Arms Family Homestead! lol Ok, with that said, cows are great too ;)

Just curious, respectfully, is it necessary to strain again since you've already strained it through the cheesecloth while milking? Please, no offense, just a curiosity to me. Being a nurse I completely get the need for everything to be as clean as possible and, should I get a milking animal, I will also probably wear nitrile gloves. I will probably also sew an elastic band in the cheesecloth (making two or three depending). That way it will slip right over the bucket edge. But, if your gonna double strain it anyhow, why not put the cheesecloth over the strainer, over the bucket? Would this not save time? Well, except to then immediately pour into Mason jars of course. Also, Aust, how do you get those random clips? Not that I need to or want to but I'm apparently a very curious person today. Lol. Your welcome to PM me or email me if you like. My youtube channel is Rocks Corner. Thank you, sorry post is so long. Rock

Different people have different preferences. Cows are the best in my book because one jersey can make enough milk for a large family everyday WITH butter, cheese, and much much more. Then you can sell the excess AND still only milk once a day. Sheep and goats are second and third because of their mini dual purpose life. They are better for smaller families and people willing to build playground for goats to keep them in. Of course everyone has their own preferences, this one is mine.
