Was 17 in 1980. Mixed-race and living in South London. By that age, I had already been physically dragged into a Police van whilst walking along the street when it stopped and a load of Police jumped out, searched and really aggressively questioned, openly racially abused, on “suspicion of murder”……..twice! I was actually a completely harmless kid, who actually went to a ‘posh’ school in South London and had never committed a crime in his life. Such was the daily spectre and possibilities in South London in those days. A year later……inevitably….the Brixton riots erupted!

Young man in audience explains (twice) that he was beaten up, and the Police arrested the bad guys. John Maw : "So they beat you up, first?" Quite the investigative reporter, was our John.

They got searched because they were acting sus. Then they got onto a show to vent.

Well something must have worked, as I don’t recall dozens and dozens of teenagers being stabbed to death by other teenagers in the 80s.
