Hey guys! Today I wanted to show you what it sounds like when I practice blues improvisation.
This is something I’ve worked hard on over the past year and I’m quite happy with how I’ve progressed in that time but as with anything on the guitar, there’s always more work to be done.
I think that recording yourself and listening back on a regular basis can be a helpful way of analysing your playing and figuring out what aspects of your improv require more attention. I’d recommend that you start doing it in your practice if you’re not already.
If I could comment on the solos presented here, what I think I need to work on the most is stringing my ideas together in a more coherent manner. I notice that there’s a lot of licks played here that sound quite disconnected from each other and so I could do with spending more time working on the gradual development of motifs throughout my solos.
I also wanted to post these clips to show you guys that practice should not sound perfect. There’s a growing misconception about players you see online nowadays where we assume that the ‘perfect’ take that everyone posts is an accurate representation of the quality of their playing from behind closed doors when the cameras are off.
Of course that’s not the case - we’re all human and we all make mistakes every day. So just remember that whilst it’s certainly sometimes a good idea to strive for perfection, it’s also healthy for you to accept that you will always hear little flaws in your playing and that’s 100% normal.

There’s a lot of value in these type videos and a lot for us to learn from them. Whenever a “mistake” happens ( strong air quotes ) , it’s really cool to hear you try and develop those ideas and into something that makes a lot of musical sense. It’s sometimes hard for me to hear the concept “thematic development” present in other players “perfect takes” and I think that’s in part due to how perfect and polished those other videos are. It’s really cool to hear you take risks and then turn that into something musical and inspiring. It’s also motivates me to do the same in my practice and not be overly self critical to the point skipping practice sessions. The vulnerability it takes to do this is awesome, and I for one have benefitted from it and am more looking forward to my next backing track practice session! 🙏🏼 🥂

Outstanding!!! full of gems and lots of tasty licks! the great thing about free style playing is that it puts you on the spot to dig into your memory of your influences and all you have practiced and it brings out your true style of how you impliment those notes based on your feel, your mood, and your fingers and mind to see if you can play what you are thinking. most times the surprising goose bumps on your skin is felt to the hearers as well and it is magical. Your knowledge of the fretboard is something to be admired Ross. thank you for sharing your raw unedited skills. it shows your honesty as a musician. i honestly did not hear any mistakes. when I play and make mistakes usually i just bend into the note that fixes it and it ends up sounding better than i had intended (but not always)🤗🤗🤗 keep up the great work you do brother, you are an inspiration to us boomers who are just now learning the proper way to play after many years of bad habits and theoretically wrong notes!!! be well!!!😇😇😇

Hot Damn Ross! That was smoking. I'll be taking your advice and start working out what you played here, how you moved around from chord to chord, and try to see if I can play it in different areas of the fretboard. This was definitely not what one of my practice sessions looks like, but super cool to see and still valuable for me. Thanks for sharing. I'll be digging back in to your bulletproof course.

I just discovered your channel. Wow!!! I love your video on motifs. “If you can’t take the set of notes and find them any where on the neck” hit me like a ton of bricks!! Since then I am hell bent on learning just that. In just few days I am already feeling a lot less lost. Even if you just build a motif with two or three notes the fretboard becomes so much clearer. I just wanted to thank you.

@RossCampbellGuitarist
@RossCampbellGuitarist 2 жыл бұрын
Well, I've been playing blues since I was a teenager but really it's only been in the past 18 months that I've properly learned how to navigate the chord changes and the main thing that's helped has been to transcribe as much as I possibly can from other players. Watching random solos on KZfaq and learning them note for note, noticing how they've moved from the I to the IV or navigated the turnaround, taking note of those things and then trying to replicate them in different areas of the Fretboard, over various backing tracks/grooves and of course in many different keys.
