Sherlock Holmes while I actually am a fan of Damian, I still disagree. There are many versions of Batman with several complexities and layers that make him great. You don’t even need to look far if you’re a Damian fan. Simply read the comic run he was created in. Grant Morrison is one of the best Batman writers and it shows there. Honestly I’d put all the Robins above Damian.......except maybe Stephanie and Carrie but they don’t usually count anyways.

That's fair. I just said Damian because I find his personality and relationships fascinating. Also, what is the name of Damian's intro arc? In terms of Morrison's work with Damien, I've only read Batman and Robin (2009).

Yep. Seeing The Dark Knight convinced me to buy Nolan's earlier films and watch them. I have never once regretted that decision. And I've seen all of his films since the Dark Knight too, in theater. So far the only one I think I've missed is Insomnia. (and since several of Nolan's movies have actually *given* me insomnia, not too keen on a film that promises that in the title). Nolan as a director combines incredible visuals, innovative storytelling, a trust that the audience isn't stupid (something Hollywood really needs to learn), compelling characters, and a tendency to play with conventional structure. In my mind, that puts him in a class with the Great Directors.

Batman is a hero because he is at least these three things: 1) impossibly driven, 2) impossibly clever, and 3) impossibly decent. The great triumph of Batman is how, despite not being blessed with supernatural powers, he uses his incredible resources, both real and mental, to transcend those who are so blessed. We, the audience, can therefore aspire to Batman's greatness with the assurance that we will become greater ourselves, even if we can't equal him. Is he perfect? No. He's closed-off. Mission-focused. Driven by trauma, and at times, philosophically at odds with himself. And yet, he's a testament that our demons and the pressures of society around us, do not define our capabilities. At least that's what Batman means to me.

I honestly think the problem with those movies are that the studio executives keep wanting to chase that "Dark Knight Trilogy" rush, wanting to re-create lightning in a bottle, and you just...can't. The Dark Knight trilogy, love it or not, was a phenomenon that can't be repeated or replicated...Heck, we're still not even sure exactly WHY it's as popular and as beloved by some as it is ...yet they keep trying: "MAKE IT DARK, MAKE IT EDGY. MAKE IT GRITTY! MAKE IT REALISTIC! THE DARK KNIGHT WAS ALL OF THESE THINGS AND PEOPLE LOVED IT, AND WE MADE ALL THAT MONEY!" instead of making something else unique, with a story and characters I'll care about in the end, especially if they get killed off.

As a fan of Batman I'm interested, but I haven't cared for a live action Batman film before, or after as much as I enjoyed Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy (namely the first two). Is it the perfect representation of Batman no not for everyone, but in terms of story, and character development I haven't been more impressed by anything else yet. I always look forward to seeing another incarnation of the Batman on film, but I doubt anything will top for me personally what was achieved with This trilogy as it has a true beginning, middle, and end.

As Carl Jung would say, Bat-Man could represent the "shadow" of the psyche. Not necessarily evil, but he represents what can't be repressed (he does what Bruce Wayne can't). Only by integrating the shadow, can you go on to complete the master piece of your life. The shadow is the apprentice piece of a hero's path.

Cool, I hope to see more of his comics iteration on the next video. The movie versions are very different from what’s on the page and most people get a very narrow idea of the characters (not just Batman, but all comics in general).
@Batknight12
@Batknight12 6 жыл бұрын
I would agree with this. The Nolan movies do a fantastic job capturing a lot of the main overall themes and ideas of Batman. But in the comics, he is quite a different type of character then how he is portrayed in them in a lot of ways. You can't really understand his character unless you read them and other adaptions.

J.P. Armstrong, I think the best Interpretations is Batman the animated series. I think does well job representing the batman.
@Batknight12
@Batknight12 6 жыл бұрын
Hulavuta I can understand this, but I also think that kind of analysis doesn't really work for a character like Batman. He's so much more than just the sum of his parts (or in this case his many interpretations). You really have to look at his entire history to see the whole picture of who he is, otherwise your just seeing a small part of him. Mainly due to his character being forever built and expanded upon. That's what happens when you deal with a character who has existed for 70 years. If you want to do that, than the title of the video should be 'what kind of hero is the Nolan Batman' instead.

For once I strongly disagree with your points about the romantic hero. What you state isn't wrong, it is incomplete, you overview the main aspect of a romantic hero: he is overwhelmed with emotions, he sees the world in colours others can't, he is *passionate*. The greatest romantic heroes are those of Victor Hugo. For example the hatchback of "Notre Dame" is a goddam example by the way he dies: Esmeralda the woman he loves in a one-way relationship gets burned to a tinder so he joins her in the flames, unable to see a world without her, desperate to share something with the gipsy-woman. One might think this is a tragic end but the tragic hero is crushed by fate, God or values and knows about it often resulting in a dilemma. Not the best example since it is a tragicomedy but in "Le Cid" a play by Pierre Corneille the hero, Don Rodrigue is in love with Chimene. The father of Chimene slaps the father of Rodrigue. The victim of the "soufflet" (slap with a glove) too old to challenge the father of Chimene asks his son to defy in a duel and to kill the father of his beloved. Don Rodrigue is therefore in a dilemma: either he defends the honour of his family and loses Chimene, either he lives in shame. Finally, I'd like to add one more definition to the word "hero". In the antic sense of the word, the hero isn't the one with powers, who saves the day or whatever. The hero is the one who takes decisions.

man, what a video, just love your analysis and I'm looking forward for part two. Batman is one my favourite modern culture's hero and the Nolan Trilogy is simply brilliant. Thus, what you just said makes me think in other directions. Considering the series of Games of Thrones (at least the books and not the tv show) I've just realized that what makes them so good is not only the embroiling stories, the masterly use of fantasy elements, the deep of the historical and realistic setting, but that each ASOIAF's character embodied the features of the tragical hero as Aristoteles had described him: the one whose failure depends only from his frailty or his misjudgements. I've never seen it in that way.

Great video. That’s astonishing to understand how complicated the Batman is and how it became possible because of centuries of literature and theatrical legacy before him.

I was so happy when you mentioned Rastignac. He was the first thing that came to mind in your discussion of Romantic heroes. This is a great outline of why he could never implement the changes he hoped for.

4:32 No, I don't think Batman's tragic error in The Dark Knight lies in not killing the Joker. It lies in not telling Gotham's people the truth about what happened Harvey Dent. It's morally wrong to assume that the people can't handle the truth and need to be lied to for their own sake and that error will then create all those additional problems for Batman and his city.

Nah, Not killing Joker is the defining moment since it directly cause a tragedy to Batman. Not revealing Dent is definitely another flaws, If you watch Wisecrack channel, they also analyze about this.

So glad the Count of Monte Cristo was mentioned in here. Both the book and the movie are fantastic, and in my opinion Edmond Dantes is the best romantic hero. "He who has felt the deepest grief is best able to experience supreme happiness.”
