Last year I was in a comic shop and had a talk with the owner. He said he never read a manga in his life but he believes he should really read Attack on Titan because it singlehandedly saved his shop from bankruptcy. Apparently in his 20 years of running a comic shop he has not seen one thing sell as well as Attack on Titan.

Poor Isayama, I really hated his art at first but once I watch and read his interviews he acknowledges that and his self-esteem was so low. He was rejected 20 times if I rmb it right. He was ready to give up. He was just a young man from a countryside coming to the capital to pursuit his dream. So glad he didn't stop trying! And his art has improved DRAMATICALLY. This man is a legend. I felt bad for mocking his art skills.

I'm so tired of AoT being reduced by its action scenes and visuals. There's actually really great character development. Especially Eren, who's the typical shonen main character until he realises that in reality you can't save everyone with the power of love and friendship.

Eren has got some *proper* character development coming up in Season 3. As in, for his character, it’s going to be goddamn fundamentally shattering to everything he thought he held dear. This is the season where Eren takes his first steps from being a boy to becoming a man. It’s going to be excellent from the character perspective.

People hate him simply because “he doesn’t win” people like Katsuki Bakugou even though he is louder, angrier, and obnoxious, and people like him because “he wins all the time”. And it’s funny cause Eren is Selfless and Righteous (Saved Mikasa, sacrificed himself for Armin, and wants to free humanity from the threat of Titans)while Bakugo is a self centered psychopathic cunt. People call Eren a cliche shonen protagonist while he has deeper ideals than just “Kill all Titans”, and ironically people like fucking Levi because of the fact that he is that cliche character archetype EVERYONE FUCKING LIKES ex. Sasuke, Arima, etc. And people actually call him a “deep and complex character” just because the author decided to make a spinoff manga about his past due to his massive popularity. All of this really pisses me off!

@@simcosimpai8471 Yep, this video brought back memories of how I used to feel about AoT. I liked it, but I liked it in the "eh, pretty drawings be my guest" kind of way. The characterizations are way too subtle to even be noticed when someone already has the mindset of "this is a turn off my brain and enjoy some pretty drawings" show. Upon re-watching it after season 3, I noticed so many things that I completely missed when season 1 was airing. So I understand when people think it's just a dumb, gory action show. I've been there. I actually dropped it after the first 2 episodes, and only went back to it because everyone started talking about it, and I got curious...

Attack on Titan was directly by Araki, who also did Death Note. He is known for overdramatizing stuff and oversexualizing characters in an attempt to hook normies. Which is why AoT and Death Note became mainstream. So in a narrow sense SEW was right, but he totally undersold Isayama's brilliance, which was hidden behind long term storytelling in season 1. I actually dislike Araki's ADHD style of direction, and I'm glad he won't be directing season 4. But I also want SEW to make a part 2 of this video and address the areas of his video which didn't age well.
@izzitMichaela
@izzitMichaela 6 жыл бұрын
that's so strange lol because I thought the character progression was extremely intruiging and a huge reason I liked the in-between moments. Every character is shaped and affected by the events. Eren becomes less hot-headed and less confident as he sees himself failing over and over, Armin realizes how smart he is and gets the confidence to become a vital force of the team, Jean realizes that living only for himself is inadequate and becomes more and more selfless as time goes on, I think tons of characters are very compelling. They might not be complex, but they have enough color to make it a great cast to follow. Another reason I love it was because it completely breaks the conventional anime stereotype of Big fight ->hero is losing->hero gets power-up->everything is okay. The only power up the hero's got was eren's titan power, but even that was quickly shown to be not unique and a trait that the antagonists also had. This once again made eren the weakling. Battles involve everyone's expertise and even after working together, sometimes a won battle is just a battle where they hold off the enemy for a few more days. There's such a realism to the conflict that you truly don't know who will win in any given arc.

I can't agree that people don't get into AoT for the story/plot. The story development in the latest manga chapters is amazing, and was amazing in earlier chapters as well. Ones that haven't been animated yet. The world has evolved in a way very few probably guessed it ever would, and it's incredible. There has also been very in-depth progression for several characters recently, I won't say which, but Isayama has evolved a lot as an artist since this series' inception. It's an entirely different beast now and I feel a lot of the points made in this video once held water, but can't anymore.

I don't think many of you notice how most of our characters are teenagers. Also, they are not equipped with the knowledge of our world, but their own. Also, they are trained to fight, meaning, some more complicated traits are bound to be left behind. Look at it this way: As they mature, their emotions and personalities do so as well. So that's why I don't have a problem with 'characterisation' as some like to put it. The first big emotion they are faced with at the beginning is fear, and reasonably so. Not sure if you've read the manga, but the series' third arc, "Uprising", kinda fixes a lot of the story issues people bring up. It marks the halfway point of the series where things start to get much more political and complex. Over the top fights and emotions are still there, but I feel like it marks a change for the series and takes it from "pretty good" to "great".

For people who say this show is superficial, philosophical questions is raised everywhere in the show: 1) the unpredictability of the outcome of our decision (to believe in myself or in my team? cf. Eren & Levi); 2) should we get rid of our own humanity when fighting monsters? (Erwin's & Armin's "the end justifies the mean" philosophy) 3) particularism v.s. universalism when it comes to our moral obligation to people (Mikasa's realization that the world is cruel, that life is only made possible by the death of others, that she can keep people she loves alive only by being indifferent to the lives of everyone else.) Attack on Titan shocks people not only with action, gore or plot twist. It shocks people's moral mentality nurtured under peaceful environment with a war-time morality. It is particularly fresh especially for Western audience because in many apocalyptic films and TV series in the West, the core values (individualism, the family, etc.) of modern Western society is more often re-affirmed rather than challenged. Heroic individualism and the love for the family are what will save the day. But in AoT, victory comes with a much higher price: the leading saviour of the show, Erwin, is willing to sacrifice hundreds of innocent civilian lives to capture one person. Western shows never would present a Machiavellian character with that much blood on his hands with such a favourable light. Not even in politically sophisticated GoT.

I’m not buying the “people like it because big scary monster zombie threat” the character development and storylines are very complex and every arc lives up to its hype and then some; you can also tell the writer really thought out the story from start to finish rather than making it up as he goes along; the little hints he throws in there, conversations that seem meaningless all end up being important/making sense when you find out the twist at the end, but what really drew me into this show in season one was that it’s different than any other anime, no one is safe there’s no magical solution to every problem sometimes in life you’re just completely and utterly fucked and no power of friendship will save you if you’re completely fucked

And yes, it's refreshing that the story was very much thought through from the beginning, it made everything so coherent, logical and satisfying when the dots connected. You focused too much on the details and forgot what actually makes it interesting, which is the MYSTERY -What are Titans -What do they want -Who's a Titan who's not -WHAT THE HELL IS IN EREN'S BASEMENT. The mental the games that the show plays with you, as well as you trying to figure out these mysteries (kind of like a crime fiction) and the insane plot twist you get, is what makes it truly popular.

Samuel Appiah Mystery after mystery is only good for so long. It can quickly become tedious. Especially when some of the mysteries have obvious answers, and others are super convoluted. The reveal of the mysteries of the world is what made me finally lost interest in the franchise entirely, because I don't care about most of the characters because they're mostly one dimensional. Becouse if he said it was a good show, he'd be lumped in with the normies that was introduced to anime through AoT. And SEW is way above that. He's better than all of us, is what it comes down to.

@@greenstuff3706 SEW is very conscious of being seen as an authority in the "anime community". I'm sure he's a great guy and enjoy most of his content. But this video is filled with bias and all his claims can easily be debunked. It's pretty clear that he made this video for the sole purpose of lecturing the people who's new to anime, about how he knows better what's good than they do. Becouse AoT did attract a huge amount of people into anime. It's also why the title isn't "why you should watch", but instead "why it's popular". Going with the most superficial approach and trivializing the show as much as he can. It's fair that he doesn't like it. But his "cretiques" are not consistent and he purposefully ignores aspects that doesn't fit into his narrative.
@greenstuff3706
@greenstuff3706 4 жыл бұрын
Fearch 93 It’s hard for me to disagree with any of that. This isn’t the only video that these criticisms apply to, and it is pretty much one of his most pervasive problems as a critical thinker. Another example where you can see Wolf superficially trying to dissect what made a show what it was without much research or fact-checking is the one where he talks about Dragon Ball GT, where he glosses over contextually important plot points and keeps contrasting it to Z when it was trying to be more like the original Dragon Ball (at least in the beginning). GT might be divisive at best, but there are certainly many valid ways to criticize it, instead of just writing it off as a kids show and saying “It’s no longer for you”, like Wolf does. Thankfully though, Wolf is always striving to improve his content, being humble and open to critique unlike some other video essayists, which is a huge part of why he has such a large audience. With his decision to take a break from video making in his latest Hunter x Hunter video, and his response to the video that Craftsdwarf made about him, I’m sure he’ll be more aware of his flaws and learn to work past them in the foreseeable future.

Touches on a few points but misses out the main two especially concerning why the manga was already extremely popular before the anime made it a world wide phenomenon. First is the mystery, holy shit the mystery. At no point in AoT did it feel like the author was making up stuff as he went along. Every time a mystery is revealed you can go back and find countless foreshadowings from chapters written maybe 3 years ago. It's simply a ridiculously well thought out and well executed mystery that slowly unravels in a way that shows like Lost promised but could never deliver. Second is character development. No idea what show/manga you were watching/reading but AoT has some seriously well written and three dimensional characters. Every character from the main three to the supporting cast to the so called villains feel like real human beings with depth. No idea what you were watching but AoT has a lot more than just blood and gore.

It's honestly all about the story. The characters are well defined and it does a really good job of dropping breadcrumbs of mystery about its world which pay off down the line. Pretty much every detail feels like it's there for a reason and has been thought out to fit in the story. Also, you can say the art isn't conventionally strong, but there's still no denying that the series still contains many very iconic visuals. Things like the uniforms, the Colossus titan, the regular titan, the walls and the mobility gear are all really interesting designs. Even though the art isn't the best and the animation is clearly done on a tight budget, it's not lacking visually.

FT started out great. It was a good shonen with likable varied characters. Given its a guild setting that you by default end up with a cast of many, people end up latching to at least one distinct character and just have fun watching them have fun. The mangaka is also very good in callbacks. He remembers the side characters he used and brings them back every now and then. He doesnt use them as plot device to jsut show a cool character and never mention them again. The way he writes the interaction of some characters like pairings are also fairly satisfactory. He's also fairly ok in foreshadowing so everything that isnt nakama powered actually makes sense. Personally I stuck by it for the characters and there is a good amount of mystery in the plot and how things came to be and all that. What makes things bad though is the overexcess of nakama and the fact this manga in the end has literally no stakes. No one ever effin dies basically making the emotional issues Mashima tries to do when he shows you an almost death scene cheating and a complete fake out because hey theyre apparently not dead. The later battle victories also are turning to be veeeeery cheap and unearned. FT expresses the importance of bonds but when it's the same damn formula ad infinitum, it gets really boring and predictable. It steals away the tension of a scene because the hero who looked like he's near death, we know is gonna pick himself up later after remembering his bonds and render the enemy to next Tuesday. And somehow revive the other person we thought had died.

This video makes no exception.AOT characters may seem poorly developed during the first season, but it's only because it was mainly a survival during the Battle of Trost, which lasts half the season at least. All we saw was just human beings (worst of it, 15 years old teenagers who just became friends !) struggling to survive, and it was pretty well done and heart wrenching in my opinion. There was no time for extremely complex personalities or backgrounds, and it wasn't necessary, because watching kids being heavily traumatized when they face the reality of their world was the best and only thing to do for a beginning. It's only after that beginning that we can go further on those character's mind, and the show did it successfully in the current manga, in season 2 and even during season 1/ first volumes, with great characters like Jean or Levi. Besides, following your arguments, I don't understand why you "enjoy" Mikasa, she's actually the one who is the least developed, and the anime portrayed her in the most "melodramatic" way. Annie has a great potential, but she disappeared from the story after volume 8/9, and even before she had very few appearances.

@@pyromaniac3098 I wouldn't really call him a Gary stu exactly, but those points you brought up about how he isn't perfect aren't valid because they don't matter in the context of the story. His violence is usually played to make him look more "badass" and there is rarely any consequence to it, so in the context of the way the show presents it, that is not a character flaw. His rudeness and social awkwardness is also played either for laughs or to make him look badass, so again, not really a character flaw. As for his cleaning obsession, that's just a quirk. Essentially, even if the trait itself is not a positive one, it isn't a character flaw if the show never properly acknowledges it as one.

To the people saying theres "no excuse" the story is very limited, it has a defined end that is very close in terms of both manga and anime, there is just simply not enough time to go into in-depth background of so many people, especially ones who do not matter to the story at this point in time, it is not this anime's purpose, it's a seinen (don't know the spelling) not a slice of life. Also in the Manga looks like Mikasa is FINALLY going to make any sort of progress character wise

I can tell that the people who dislike Snk is not because of the show itself, but audience and other factors that aren't relevant to the show itself. Yeah, it has a simple concept but it's not as if the concept is not explained. There is a lot of mysterys in AOT that people enjoy but also the characters that at first can be seen as annoying as hell, but when you look at it realistically, they have the right to be. If you had gone through those things, would you have done better? Characters don't get development? I dunno, feels like a lot of people undermine some of the characters in this show. Like how Eren realizes to trust his comrades, but realizes its more complicated than that after they are killed by the female titan, how Mikasa learns to respect Levi after he helps rescue Eren, Ymir becoming much less selfish, Christa becoming Historia and the personality changes that come with that, the complete shift in personality with the traitors. Also, emotional outbursts and irrational behavior is a positive in my book. I'm tired of these anime with the calm, cool, collected main character(s) who never mess up or say something that makes them look weak. Real humans often release their emotions when they build up, and don't always say the right things.

3:40 Really? Without Armin all the others would have died countless of times because he is the one who always comes up with the plans to get out of dangerous situations. When they were stuck at the HQ his idea to blind the Titans that surrounded them got them out of there. His idea of using Eren to conceal the wall was the reason humanity had its very first victory against the Titans. His quick thinking got Eren and Mikasa saved during the first attack on the wall. I love Armins character and can relate a lot to his self-worth issues. Being the physically weakest of all the characters he sees his life as disposable and yet he keeps going because he has one simple dream. Yet he is not this pure angel many people see in him. He flat out lies to Berthold to achive his goal, he kills another human being to save a friend only to find out that said attacker hestitated and he even suggests a false flag attack which shocks those around him. I am not saying he is the best character of the show but I really do enjoy whenever he is on screen.

One of the thing that impressed me about AOT is how incredibly simple the story is at first. Humanity vs Titans Humans live within this three walls Three cute kids have their parents or guardians killed by Titans It becomes incredibly complex as it goes on. Everything becomes a huge reveal because has something complex going on behind it. Every encounter has a huge reveal behind it. But every encounter has a emotional twist, someone who you thought was too well developed to die right there is killed, or someone turns out to not be on your side. The battles are intense on very different fronts at the same time.

I feel like something that's often overlooked is the series's interesting themes that it conveys. Not only is humanity essentially being treated like cattle compared to the Titans (which the series physically points out), but, more interestingly, it's shown time and time again that the only way to survive in this cruel world is to become more monstrous than the 'monsters' the characters go up against. Which is shown several times in the series, specifically in the battle against the Female Titan, where Erin has to legitimately throw away his feelings over the life of his comrade to get determined enough to transform in a fight that the Female Titan loses specifically because she cares more about the lives of the people caught in their battle than Erin does. It's an incredibly interesting concept to play with that ties into several aspects of the series as well as the psychology of the characters, and it's something that I wished more people would talk about or take note of when discussing what exactly sets Attack on Titan apart from other shonen series where characters simply die a lot.

Anime is really obscure around where I live and people who barely know anime know about Attack on Titan. The manga is currently at chapter 98, it is more than worth your time reading. I'd say that into the Uprising arc it becomes less about mindless titan killing in droves and more about understanding how the world works. only considering an anime/manga to be good if it fits a single, rigid mold is ridiculous. for e.g., the stop-and-go pacing of SNK is a device used to convey the waves of attacks and the suddenness with which they occur, and also serves to manipulate the audience/reader's emotions (e.g., how dissonant/casual/surreal the very recent reveal felt). isayama's use of literary devices like this (notably foreshadowing) is what makes his work compelling on so many levels.

But it does. It's incredibly stale and lacks any kind of detail, and in most cases, a background too. Take a look at the panels at 00:50. Eren's clothes aren't even fully inked which may have been intentional to give the world a rough look but it looks bad nonetheless. The lack of a sky on the panel of Eren and Mikasa running and lack of shading on the buildings give it a bland, two-dimensional feel. Even the panel with Armin in it is lacking a background. Look at 00:47, there's absolutely no background on the panel with Armin, Eren and Mikasa on it and it's incredibly awkward to look at. SuperEyepatchWolf is 100% correct. The manga does look bad.

Reiner & bertholdt talking about going to their hometown, the church and government keeping the public uneducated about the past with contradictory information, etc. I'll admit that what ended up being in the basement was very disappointing because it was information that we all knew about anyway before we saw the photo. But, the strengths of that arc outweighed that weaker reveal a ton. That was a very awesome tense situation when Levi had to choose who would live & die between Armin & Erwin.

I think Digi is a well argued voice for the alternative/ hipster-y crowd. Eyepatch wolf is a smart voice for the mainstream crowd. They serve different audiences.

John Smith I don't know. I used to like Digibro's videos for the way they were like mini dissertations, but now he just seems to have become lost up the cavernous void of his own egotistical backside.

That's what I mean though. Hipsters talk like people who have their heads lost up the cavernous void of their own egotistical backsides. I think as he grew older, his tastes changed and he is now in the anime hipster camp. I think he's still smart and argues well but his tastes no longer line up with myself or the mainstream crowd.

this video aged poorly, most of his critics about AoT fall flat when we consider what happened in seasons 2-3 and the madness going on in the Manga

Just wanted to point out when you mentioned around the 14 minute mark that sometimes the characters act rash or non sensical. Isn’t that more human? I agree that seeing a smart character solve a high-stakes issue with tactical methods can be very fun to watch but the feeling of characters acting by impulse instead of always having a deep monologue about the method they shall use to pick up a slice of bread can make you relate to them more or sympathise with the fact that they might be desperate. And then we can receive more katharsis from when they fail, which is indeed what SnK does. Of course this also may be seen as poor writing perhaps, but I think it really depends.

it really depends. the important thing is to make a good character. if they behave according to their core personalities, even if they change so much, it feels human but if you develop the characters for plot it is poor writing

All the character development in aot is because of a specific reason, there are no-non sensical (made that word up) changes in character, or changes in character that feel forced or rushed. It's all for a reason and that's only one of the 1,000,000's of reasons why this show is so great.

Thanks for that, I am now visualizing Eren taking a massive dump as the camera circles about him with the opening soundtrack of Season 1 playing, meanwhile his character throws his hands down and screams.

I don't get why every time some artist do unconvetional art style, every one bring up the argument that "he doesn't know how to draw"... Seriously, look at how he draw the humanoid figure in the corridor at 5:48 . The shadows, the angle... this is a extremely hard thing to do... Just to represent something in that view angle is hard enought. Putting this in a dark, moody ambient with just one light source is crazy... Most people simply cannot draw something like this. If you're feeling uneasy by looking at this representation, is not because he doesn't know how to draw, it's because he achieved exactly what he wanted to convey.

Besides, if the story's good enough the art doesn't have to be great, it's just a bonus if it is, look at the one punch man webcomic, ONE's art is nowhere near the level of good manga artists, but the story is incredible, so people are happy to read it anyway

I don’t know why this video always pops up in my recommended just before a chapter release. And watch it every time to see how poorly this video has aged. Wolfy really needs to make an update video after season 4

He made some decent points, but he pretty much misses the biggest one: the mystery. That's what drove me to read the manga, and is also the driving force behind the first half of season two. Where did the titans come from? Who are the Armored + Colossal Titans? Why do titans eat humans? What lies outside the walls? The manga excels at creating these mysteries, and gives just enough subtle hints for you to put two and two together and figure it out yourself before it's actually revealed. Titan says "Welcome Home" to Connie? Connie says it reminds him of his mom? Well, you think, what if that titan *is* Connie's mom? Then you start thinking, what if *all* titans are actually humans? You're not entirely sure, so you keep reading/watching to get answers. [Attack on Titan's widespread appeal is what pulls you in, but it keeps you for its mysteries. It's what makes anime-onlys start reading the manga. It's the anime that makes you theorize who a certain character is, what happened in a certain event, or what's going to happen next. It keeps you on edge because there's so much foreshadowing and subtle hints that you pick up along the way that let you know that *shit's about to get real.* Decent video, but he misses one of the biggest points.

EXACTLY! That's the main mystery of the entire series and what keeps so many people interested. And, being a manga reader, damn is it one **hell** of a reveal. Mindblowing, better than the Reiner & Bert reveal.

I'd argue that the constant piling on of mysteries is what drags the writing quality down. The story relies on those mysteries to keep people going rather than quality story telling. Good point though.

I don't remember much of the first season so i won't argue if the plot is good or not. I'll just say that every mystery in this show feels like something the autor doesn't want me to know so i keep watching/reading. I mean, that's the idea of a mystery show, but here is terribly obvious. Those mysteries are the central core of the show, every action the characters make is either to resolve them, with inevitable poor results, or to survive. The show pays too much attention to them, and just doesn't want to give me the answers. And the thing with this mysteries is that the more they drag, the less hope i have for them to be something rewarding, it's my natural reaction. So i don't care about them anymore, and the second season bored me because of that.
