Man, there's also a level of snobbery too when it comes to not wanting to be a hype beast. Do you like something simply because it's not as popular? There's people who blindly follow the hype and there's also people who blindly go against the grain simply to feel better about themselves. Both of those people are equally insufferable. At the end of the day, you'll be respected if you can give genuine reasons as to why you are wearing something rather than just doing something out of a precept. If all it takes to not be a hype beast is to wear things that aren't trendy to any capacity, then you'd be running around naked with doritos on your nipples, wearing a trash bag with holes poked in it, wearing a dress made out of aluminum. Basically you'd be dressing so avante garde that nobody will relate to you in any way, and you'd be called insane. Fashion is about wanting to identify yourself as much as it is fitting in with a certain group. Just because your 'group' is smaller and more niche doesn't make you any different from the kid who wears hype shit to fit in with a larger crowd. There is no identity without groups and sub groups to differentiate yourself from. Even people who say they "don't care" about fashion are still projecting an identity, that they don't care about fashion. They can dress "sloppily" or "uncoordinated" or very plainly, but that still is an outward projection onto the world about who they are and how they wish to be perceived. Maybe as someone who is more laid-back and is not superficial.

I don’t think certain item or trends makes you a “hypebeast”, I think it’s the reasoning why you want that item is what makes you a “hypebeast”. If you have that mind-state of the man make the clothes, the clothes doesn’t make the man I think you can wear whatever you like. Frank ocean was spotted wearing the new off white dunks, he’s the coolest guy right now, I wouldn’t dare call him a hypebeast. But if you want the items for wanting be make a status statement or think that thing is gonna turn you into someone else, then yeah you’re a hypebeast.

I’ve also fell into the hype of the carhartt Detroit jacket, the Arcteryx alpha sv hype the 501 Levi’s but the biggest difference from the 2015-2018 era is that these aren’t loud pieces that will look dated in a couple of years unlike a supreme bogo. I now buy clothes thinking about if they’ll look stupid or not in a couple of years.

Related to the topic of hype, it would be really interesting to see a breakdown/conversation on what makes a piece timeless rather than only trendy. Something can definitely be both and it's impossible to predict the future, but I wonder if there are any real signifiers

I feel like the hypebeasts from the 2013 -> 2018 have evolved to what is “hype” in this age (gorpcore/vintage/archive) but have better taste in personal style since the popular trends arent as logo heavy. Nonetheless, hypebeasts are just people who follow trends to be apart of something , only having interest in it because of how popular it is at face value. Nothing wrong with it, as trends certainly help coverage for great brands/styles/method of creating clothes, whether or not its warranted. But, hypebeasts do give people who are true enthusiasts of certain trends before they were trends (active hikers wearing gorpcore/skaters wearing skate gear/avant garde shoppers before the archive wave) a somewhat negative reputation as it fills that community with fake enthusiasts that tarnish the reason why a certain piece is great/interesting/meaningful to the designer/brand, as the hypebeast only see its popularity value in it. Respect on your discussion on this.

This was very interesting… kind of a self discovery for myself… i never considered myself a hypebeast, but i do follow trends, initially.. I like to try new trends, see how it looks on me, how i feel in it, then take pieces from that trend that I love and add it to my personal style… I’m 37 so i have brand loyalty to Nike and Jordans, but i feel that makes my style… I love denim and sneakers, and lately (past 10 years) graphic tees so anything “hype” in those categories I probably want it, but with prices today I usually wont buy it… I live by “the look for cheap” motto. I love how you’ve documented your progression on youtube from doing simpler how to styler and review videos to doing in depth talks about very heavy and nuanced topics in fashion atm. From someone who is in tier-2 but is turning and want to be in tier-3 thanks to me indulging in fashion through all this quarantine and studying designers like Hiroki Nakamura, and delving deeper into workwear and japanese american I completely agree with your points. Dont really care about any classification when it comes to what you wear/look. To be honest as long as you walk out the door feeling confident and genuinely happy because of how you look whether it is because of your clothes, the make up, hair, etc.. there shouldnt be any concerns. Creating and transmitting positive energy is what we need in this world the most, everyone's contribution to that is very important.

I don’t know if I would call myself a hypebeast persay but I do love Americana. I mostly buy Visvim, orslow, and other Americana brands. I think my most hypebeast pickup I want right now is Salomon Xt-6’s though. Also, I guess i can say is my Visvim christos were hyped. However, I wanted them before folks were all on them.

I can admit we get kinda snobby towards the newer kids bc we feel like they haven't taken the time to learn the history behind what they're buying. If they do want to learn/know the history, then I'm always gonna show love!

Man I just wear what I can afford lol. Won some dunk raffles so I wear the dunks. New Balances and Dr. Martens are in my price range, then I wear that. Workwear and denim is usually affordable, so I wear that. What makes someone a hypebeast is WHY they like or wear what they wear. If they wear it BECAUSE of its popularity and not because you genuinely like and appreciate the fashion, then they're probably a hypebeast. Wearing something popular is inventible, but WHY you wear what you wear makes all the difference.

The background looks nice! I really did enjoy hearing your point of view and I pretty much agree with all you said. Most of the people who are really in to fashion are in a certain way a hypebeast, just as you said. Some people will struggle with thinking about the fact that they are in a certain way, in the same section with the people who wear supreme all the time, but sadly at the end of the day we are all wearing "hyped" items.

I think that hype and popularity exposed me to some things that I would have never tried otherwise. With things like wider pants being trendy right now that lowered the bar for me personally. I know that things like that shouldn't matter but it sure helps!

Totally agree with the statement that everyone buys into hype at some point...I think it would honestly be borderline impossible to be into any type of fashion and not buy into a certain trend at any point in your fashion journey. I guess my definition of a hypebeast would be 1. Someone who constantly pays resell for certain sneakers nike dunks Jordan 1 etc obvi its ok to pay resell but if you do it for every single hyped sneaker its hard to not be called a hype beast since your are paying extra just to flex that item (incase the person actually really likes it). 2. Someone who constantly tries to have their feed or whole aesthetic based on whatever an IG mood board like Hidden is posting for example. 3. Its kinda crazy how hype beast isn't so obvious these days. 4. I also buy into hype but I try to learn about what im buying into and I dont try to indulge in it and just go crazy by buying 10 items from a particular brand (use to do that with supreme circa 2016). For example im looking to pick up a new Arc jacket for fall but instead of just dropping the money cause the brand is hyped ive been doing my research on which one I want and all the features of the jacket before I make my purchase decision not saying everyone has to do research before buying or it doesn't make me a hype beast but I def feel like people should do their homework before buying into a certain brand or item. The thing is that hypebeast was slanderous term for people back then. It was used to point out people who hoped on culture with no real understanding of that culture. Unless you're not part of any Social Media, every purchase you make has subconsciously been influenced by the algorithm. This happens to all fashion enthusiasts, I believe that the term hypebeast best describes the group of people you mentioned between 2013-2020. The "hypebeast" today is much more complex than the consumer of that time period. I think that the usage of data research and personalized algorithms have changed the perception of what hype is. We're just victims of research engines exposing us to sub-categories we "think are hype" but no "non-fashion" person actually knows what these microtrends are. That's why I think the term "hypebest" is outdated today. Yes, we're still riding certain waves but the IDEA of categorizing fashion consumers with one word is impossible in today's world. .. I think being a hypebeast also indicates the (quantity + frequency) of trendy items that one consumes. To me, there’s a difference between selectively participating in the most popular pieces only a handful of times a year…vs building the majority of your wardrobe primarily around what’s trending at a given moment.

I remember watching The Casual and/or Fashion Archive back in the day that came with the definition of hypebeast as a "mindset". In every type of fashion niche there will be hypebeasts: as in any of that niche you have a mindset that you need a certain items to be at the top of that niche. When you into streetwear, you need bogos, Virgil LV, or Dior Jordan. When you into gorp, you need arc. When you into vintage, you need single stitch tees or redline levis. When you into Rick-darkwave, you need those puffer and kissboots. When you into running, you need hoka or zoom%. When you into avant-garde, you need some tornado boots or Dirk boots. Hypebeast is that mindset, desire to be gazed by the others in sometype of way, to be perceived as some representative of certain aesthetics and their community.

‘Hype’ is generated from mass media consumption and fashion being very cyclical, people will be constantly dipping their toes into trends which can be reflected as ‘visual cues’ from what they’ve seen from IG accounts which generated a substantial amount of likes. There’s a stigma in the word itself ‘hypebeast’ as a label of a person being hungry for hype and clout but actually are people in search of their own style, whatever vibe they dress in which makes themselves feel good. Putting it very bluntly in my opinion I would say it’s a mandatory phase into self discovery of their own style. Hype, like media will never die down and every item will generate hype, only a matter of how much hype. We will forever be hypebeasts as no matter what style direction and how deep you are in a particular style, there’s definitely an item in that style that has a significant amount of hype. TLDR irregardless, whatever items that makes you feel good and comfortable wearing them, rock with it!!! There isn’t enough fist bumps man I’m here with more 👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼

It’s funny because I stayed away from bug logo brands and such, but now I bought a bapesta shark hoodie for nostalgic reasons to pharre and kanye’s style. I think all hype things are a cycle

Just my two cents but I think a hypebeast is someone that personally values an item based on its popularity. I think what ends up coming out of that mindset is hopping from one style to another making everything they were into a couple months back completely obsolete. Yes people's style evolves over time and I personally have gotten rid of a lot of my older clothes but I get these items valuing what they offer to my personal style and how these items resonate with me. I don't think what makes a hypebeast is based on the item itself rather the reasoning of getting said item.

I think the definition is on point. Like for me, I’ve worn workwear and japanese americana on and off for the last 10 years, but I wouldn’t have bought dunk low’s until recently. I don't see hype as a necessarily bad thing it can get a lot of people to find what styles and genres they're into and build their own personal style, it only becomes a problem if they only do what's hype for temporary validation instead of finding a style that truly fits them. People could not shape or discover a style without following trend. Implement and then analyze those trend is critical for turning it into one of a kind and unique style.

My take on all of this is that because of the hype around different clothes and accesories I have been able to find my own style better. I wear oversized vintage tees and now own a pair of dunks and if that is your definition of a hypebeast, then I am one. But I like to see it as me taking parts of different trends and making them a part of my style instead of following trends blindly.

wonderful video bro. i agree with most points made, especially liked how you placed people into tiers of hypebeast lol. i also do think the factors that makes one a hypebeast are a bit grayer. imo, i don’t think buying a few hype items makes one a hypebeast. if you’re into anything (games, anime, shoes, clothes), what you like is bound to overlap with what’s the hottest thing in that realm at some point realistically. however, i do think buying items strictly bcuz they’re hyped makes someone a hypebeast. i’m sure we can all think of someone of that ilk. that doesn’t make them a bad person or anything like that, but it does make me question whether their personalities are that of the hive or their own you know? when i see friends who are only motivated to buy things bcuz they’re hyped makes me kind of sad bcuz i love fashion sm lol. there’s always so much more to explore. but it’s none of my business lol, buy what you like, even if you like it bcuz everyone else does. we gotta move past the gate keeping and give everyone who genuinely wants to participate in the general sphere of fashion a chance to do that. on another note, the background is nice. i think you should incorporate your pieces into your background more often. for example, it would’ve been sick if you hung up the tote that drops today on the wall as like subtle promo/eye candy. people in the audience will ask about it for sure lol. have a good day to anyone who reads this long ass comment lol

it's interesting to hear your take but hypebeasts seem to be viewed as individuals who solely purchase items only because of clout, and in the things that were noted in the tiers are items that people would buy because of quality or just personal interest. a lot of brands that start popping are how people learn about them and i don't think people get into certain brands or styles mentioned only because other people do; it is hard to find good brands on one's own (at least for me)

To me a hypebeast is some one who plainly follows trends just for the sake of it, without having any knowledge of the item. Honestly, i used to be one of them. But i started reading into fashion and learning about different brand's history and ethos. From there i started to decern which one fits me the best. I guess you can say the whole hypebeast era has its plusses too, it brought many individuals, like me, into fashion. It all started with a Aape T-shirt back in 2017, till this day even though i don't wear it anymore i have it as keepsake to remind myself how far i've come (and how much money i've wasted😂)
