This is the problem with 365 day hockey coverage. They make huge deals about nothing. Marner is going to get signed. There will be no offer sheets. This is what you call making a story out of nothing. The same could (but shouldn't) be said about any other unsigned big RFA.

I agree on Austin Matthews being way overpaid. There are so many players who do just as much if not more and get paid a lot less. Leafs have always overpaid/overtraded for players. Thats on them and the Matthews/Tavares deals are gonna kill them. He isnt a comparable. He's an anomaly. Should have paid him a lesser bridge, see what he does, and then pay him. 21 year olds thinking they're worth 11+ million..

What teams fail to understand is that the pecking order on a team can have just as much, or more, of an influence on a player's salary demands as what other players are getting throughout the League.

As I said when JT was signed: the 2018-19 season Leafs are the best team Toronto will be able to ice for the foreseeable future. Unless of course Dubas wakes up one morning and realizes that one of the contracts held by Tavares, Mathews, Nylander and presumably Marner has to go. On that note a lot of defensive help could be gotten for a package of Nylander and Brown.

Ask yourself honestly. How many points does Marner get without a top flight goal scoring centre on his line, now ask your self how many Matthews gets without star wingers? That's why you pay Matthews more.

I've been saying it since day 1 , no other team is going to offer 10.5 plus mil and 4 first rounds for him , would be suprised if someone offers 10 mil and 2 first rounds but maybe, so he will get around 10

Marner staying in Toronto. He won't even consider signing an offer sheet unless it's in California or New York. Because he makes tons of money off endorsements for being the city of Toronto's younger brother. He's easy to market, he's a superstar, the media loves him, and the city loves him. If he leaves, he'll be going to a non hockey specific market, he'll matter less, and the city won't care, because no city likes hockey like Toronto does. He will have all of those endorsements go away, because there'll be blood in the water from him leaving Toronto. And if he goes to California or New York, he'd be far from the most recognizable superstar there. Todd Gurley, Philip Rivers, LeBron James, Noah Syndergard, LeVeon Bell, etcetera. So it'd make no sense to leave unless Toronto slams the door, and the Rangers want to give you max.

Marner’s almost definitely staying in Toronto, but the one thing I don’t get is that when pitching for Tavares, Dubas apparently laid out a plan for JT on how he will keep the core together long term, but one year later his plan fell apart.

Kucherov RW or Ovechkin LW in today's $value would be $12 mil min. JT as a Center would never have 47 without RW Marner. Talks about value of C vs W are unhelpful in current NHL.

There isn't a team in the league that's willing to pay 10.7 (roughly the cut off for the highest offer sheet) and give up 4 first round picks. There isn't a player in the league that is worth that.

This offer sheet stuff is waste of time. not going to happen. they ask high, they settle for less, it's made to look like a hometown discount, or marner told his agent to back off etc. probably in neighborhood of 10M/yr, which is a lot, but Skinner just got 9M, so that deal has raised everything. Best comparable to Marner is Rantannen in Colorado. At any rate, they need to wrap this soap opera up shortly after Canada Day, or it's another nylander type scenario...

Answer: I'd say Penguins fans, especially the Yinzer bunch (the term for the obnoxious Pittsburgh residents with their "championship or nothing" mentality), but Marner will have to take whatever was offered in order to join Crosby and Co, since the Pens don't have the cap space for that amount of money.

If Mackinnon, Matthews and Marner were all up for a contract right now, Mackinnon SHOULD get 3m more than the others. The other two are decent, Mackinnon is far above.

Its really stupid that Marner and his agent got to choose who his comparable is they said that the only player that he should be compared to is Matthews and that he should get around the same amount of money but hes a winger and not as good and even when rantanen and Skinner got paid both wingers of around the same caliber he still remains stubborn and has decided that he gets to choose his own compatible like no tf u dont

I tried finding a good comparable, the closest match was Tarasenko, and it wasn't $11-12m like all the experts are saying. $8.5-9m is perfectly reasonable for a ~ppg winger.

I feel like everyone just assume a team is going to have to give up 4 first rounders with their offer sheet. A team can offer Marner 10.1M X 5 years and only have to give up 2 firsts a second and a third. That would be hard for the leafs to match.

Nobody would pay them this much. They hooped their salary structure with these contracts and have never been able to add the players they need to win because of it. Never should have signed Tavares , should have gone looking for a defenseman like Alex Pietrangelo if they felt the need that early on for a UFA. Matthews and Marner should have been making around $9.5 million. Nylander actually got paid pretty reasonably. Better salary structure and you wouldn't be paying Morgan Reilly $7.5 million for another 7 years. $5.9 million for Karlsson was was too much 40-50 point player ever since.

What would that do to their salary structure? Just because leafs are willing to overpay doesn't mean other teams will. He was eleventh in scoring, in what universe is he worth more than all the players ahead of him other than McDavid?

As a Blackhawks fan, I always felt cheated that the Hawks were forced to drastically replenish after each cup win, unlike the 70's Flyers or Islanders, or 80's Oilers, or many eras of Canadian teams. So, now it is time to redefine what a dynasty is. However, my real point here, believe it or not, is to extend my condolences to Toronto and their fan base. Before they could even experience any glory, here they are having to tear their team apart. So, why oh why is Gary Buttman in the Hall of Fame? He's famous for two things now: a) Replacing 80% of the game's testosterone with estrogen so as to attract the supposedly skiddish and passive hypothetical "casual fan" and their pocketbooks; and, b) For "a" failing so miserably as a strategy that now we have a miniscule amount of fights and nobody can hold together a contender, thereby disappointing fan bases. I know some of the owners have colluded with Bettman (is it Bettman or Buttman) oh, well ... Still, the fact that this non-hockey person is in the Hall cheapens the NHL and HOF.
