I almost cried watching this video. I went through a long period of BV in mid &high school and felt so much shame about it. Was terrified to have sex an be in relationships b/c of it. It prevented me from entertaining any of it. Didn’t even know what BV was until years later . My parents and sister even shamed me about it . I had such low confidence and felt self conscious all the time. I’m so grateful for platforms like yours and doctors like you two, that provide this kind of information but also uplifts and nuetralizes the shame of it all.

It’s nice to see such a healthy and open conversation about vaginal health. There’s so many things that can set our vaginas off and any one of us is susceptible to experience it no matter how “clean” we feel we are. For me, I noticed that things like fabric softener on my clothes affects me. Literally all the little things we don’t think about on a day to day could be an issue

Seeing that most women in America isn’t learning about their vagina in schools, the fact the foods, products & some men are toxic one would think more women would be having these issues. I think the doc gave valuable info. The only criticism from me would be how the doc downplayed how common foul smells are due to all the above factors & the implications that women are afraid to go to the doctor to get help.

Medical professionals are always saying it is not your partner but I believe that is just mess they learned in a book. Just like Shan, when I’ve had problems with odors and BV it was always when I had unprotected sex and when I got rid of the person, the problem went away. I don’t care what they say, I know for a fact a partner can give you BV. I also think it may have a lot to do with men sleeping with multiple women and possibly being DL.

I started having strong odor when I was a teen and didn't have a sexual partner (not until 21), EVERY single soap irritated me and i had to deal with terrible odor and irritation all the time!! But now I drink yogurt every day and take probiotic gummies, and I use honeypot sensitive feminine wash and I have improved so much, I am no longer irritated and don't have odor (unless i skip a shower or do very intnse exercise) I really love the honey pot sensitive wash all soaps snd wash irritated me before this even sensitive dove (which is what i use on my body) I also use hughies natural baby wipes to wipe myself and not toilet paper

Every time I have sex or after period the smell returns. Not as bad when I’m celibate lol. Also think my hormone changes from birth control is major part so working on that. People should test for Mycoplasma or ureaplasma too bc BV often similar symptoms or caused more by it.

Stupidly, I have had a bad habit of keeping my tampons in too long in the past which left me with recurring BV that was a nightmare to cure. I'm still in the process of getting that cleared up but I've found yoni steaming to be really beneficial. It doesn't even need to be expensive. I steam at home with apple cider vinegar and I finally have felt comfortable to start dating again stress free without the fear of embarrassment and that insecurity the sex will be unpleasant. Thank you Shan for this important conversation!

You know what’s interesting, I started to take notes of what changed after I went pescatarian, and specifically on my period I don’t have a metallicy smell or a smell at all. So I’m wondering if eating meat gives off more of a smell versus it just happening to you? Just a thought 😄

Shan, youre such an inspiration, love the work you do here! I'm shocked you dont have more followers here ♡ I'm a sex therapost & this video is so important, normalising smell & saying no to cleansers/Goop/steamers etc, though I'd have loved some more inclusive language, such as vulva/vagina owners, AFAB... also not all people who bleed are fertile for example. Curious though, I thought pubes helped keep bacteria out of the vagina, so although maybe not helping with sweat, it does help with overall vaginal health...plus washing your vulva with shampoo also seems risky no? Re queefing, so interesting about tightening the pelvic floor for that, though again I'd caveat kegels with, see a pelvic specialist first as sometimes we can over tighten and cause more issues! Every one deserves to be able to love or accept their vulva, as all are different and beautiful, I totally understand the pain people feel around theirs, I wish one day we didn't even need vulvaplasty as we need to remove the stigma, not try and fix vulvas :(
@shanboody
@shanboody 4 ай бұрын
great notes espcially about language thank you! I do know that pubes are there for a reason, but I wonder if that reason applies to a world where we are wearing underwear and clothes. Also great call out on the shampoo, when I maintained lush pubes (I am lasered now) I would shampoo the mons pubis - never the inside and I never had issues with that or heard from my OB that it was problematic, but perhaps! Good call out for people to consider
@bimaloxley
@bimaloxley 4 ай бұрын
@@shanboody oooh such a good point re underwear & clothes! this is why we need more research! But yes, you're right in that shampooing pubes won't necessarily cause issues for all, especially if careful, but i suppose sadly most people aren't educated on the "careful" part eh :/ thanks for being awesome and reading comments

So I watched a really informed video on the history of labiaplasties. There is a lot of misinformation about "innies" vs "outties" labia majora. Natrual innies are very rare and the up tick in the presence of innies is largely driven by porn. Many female performers have had labiaplasties just for asethetic purposes, leaving viewers to think thats what is normal and desirable. While this doctor seems wonderful she quickly skimmed over the fact that she does labiaplasties for woman "who want it to just feel better about its appearance." This ignores the risks involved with labiaplasties. Many of these "aesthetic" vaginal surgeons will tell you that the risks are just about non existent. Which is grossly untrue. There are so many stories out there of women who end of with nerve damage, chronic pain and issues after. All for a totally unnecessary procedure that is driven by our culture pressuring women to view totally natural, and by in large the majority, outties as abnormal and needing "fixing." It isnt in this doctors best interest to go in detail about this bc labiaplasties are often not medically necessary, so insurance wont pay, leaving women paying thousands of dollars to these doctors. Id like to see doctors, ESPECIALLY FEMALE, pushing back on these expectations. And reassuring women that labia come in all shapes and sizes and theres nothing "wrong," or ugly about that.

Exactly. I was having a dream about that last night. About soap 🧼 and the Bible verse, that Clean people only have to wash their feet(vagina lips) not a whole bath because they haven't been having sex. Because there is no way to wash semen out. It's Plasma. Even my period blood stays stuck to the toilet bowl 🚽 and the toilet bowl is slippery porcelain, IMAGINE cloth like fabric in the skin. You can't. ["Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, [in that case, wash] not only my feet, but also my hands and my head!” Jesus said to him, “Anyone who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, and is completely clean. And you [My disciples] are clean, but not all of you.”~John 13:9-10] See. I don't take baths everyday but that's because I don't go anywhere nor am I having sex. So my vagina stays clean. If I were to go and do something then I take a bath. Most people need to bathe everyday day because they go outside, I don't go out or interact with anyone. You can't wash that semen out. Some of it stays/Stains. That's why women get cancers. Semen is also not like saliva. Again, semen is plasma, it's white blood. If the vagina were slippery like when you are on birth control, it would slip out because the vagina has hair like fibers, but when you are on birth control those hair-like fibers retract. Leaving the orifice smooth, like when you get a smooth tounge with no taste buds because you are missing vitamins minerals.

31:32 Nah, if it’s a thought that keeps bothering the person then the solution isn’t plastic surgery on the genitalia, but to see a psychologist and work on the mindset. To then learn tools to shut people’s negative narratives out regarding how femala genitalia is ”suppose” to look. That’s an internalized issue and not an actual problem that needs surgery. Fix the physical problems with surgery if needed, but the idea that psychological issues are suppose to be corrected by cutting in a physical body is a very sideways way of thinking. Yes, I don’t expect anything other coming from someone who is living off of these surgeries, but is it fixing the core issue the person is carrying around mentally, nope it does not. Fix the inner issues with therapy, you can’t fix that vy risking your oife through plastic surgery.
