What's On My Face? A Wearable Teleprompter I Invented

I wear my heads-up display in every episode - but why? It's not augmented reality, but without my wearable computer, the Voidstar Lab channel wouldn't be possible.
In honor of getting 1,000 (I mean 2,500) subscribers, I answer the single most frequently-asked question - what's on your face? It's the epic saga of how my obsession with wearing face computers drove me to finish my first successful electronics project and start my entire career.
Don't worry about the HUD from the intro, it's a stunt double.
Email me: partnerships@voidstarlab.com
Thank you all so much for getting my channel off to a great start. Your positivity and support drives me to make increasingly silly videos that are increasingly likely to cause property damage.

As crappy as 2020 has been, seeing a new wave of creative people making videos on their quirky interests has been awesome and has been giving me the motivational kick to get on the horse myself. I've been watching you and another channel Robert Tolone the last 2-3 weeks, and for some reason a collaboration between the two of you has constantly popped into my head. You perhaps building a controller to run motors for his roto casting (he's a huge proponent of hand casting) and him making molds and casting production parts for your custom eyewear. It's popped in my head every time I watch either of your videos and I just had to get it out. Keep up with the great stuff

Neat question - the original Moverio can be worn over glasses, and even comes with a clip-on frame that accepts prescription lenses. My mod brings the prism too close to my eye to wear over glasses, but the hardware can be built to do so. Also, I didn't expect so many folks to be into electronics!

yeah man, I am looking for something like this since forever, by now it should be possible to look and weigh like ordinary thickframe glases, what might be the holdup?

Probably the only options are buy the full package or use a 128x64 transparent OLED carefully glued to a pair of glasses and breakout from there. Smart glasses aren't profitable, but I hear Google might be giving it another go soon as the acquired a company called North who manufactured Focals. Unlikely to be open source but since when do we care about limits

Do you have any idea where I can get my hands on optics like this so I could build my own version? This thing looks so cool
@ZackFreedman

I’m usually the DIY guy, but I recommend buying an off-the-shelf wearable and modifying it. It’s just not possible to get prototype optics at lower prices and higher quality than by salvaging them from consumer products.

@@ZackFreedman Seconded. I'm eying one of Moverio's newer glasses right now because of this video. A shame they're so... wide, and the modification process to make them monocular looks pretty hard, especially with there being useful stuff on both sides in this version. Would love to learn more about this stuff! EDIT: I've bought one. This is now my most expensive KZfaq view... Let's hope I don't break it trying to replicate this xD

As a techie and glasses wearer, glasses mounted wearables do interest me. Imaging being able to connect a screen to your PC over bluetooth or something. I recon that'd be a cool usecase. Good stuff dude!

Hey Zack I absolutely love your videos and am so inspired. I recently switched careers into software development and have found my interests peeked even more into prototype fabrication and development in human augmentation. For those of us who have found intrigue and unachievable goals of building neat future tech from watching your videos. Are there any educational references that you personally like or would recommend for learning the basics of engineering and small electronics and machines?

Edited: You might wanna time your uploads better. Before 8pm Eastern Time is optimal, so you get the most prime time coverage within the immediate day. Watch time % from your core audience is significantly more important than likes with the KZfaq algorithm. Don't solicit likes, solicit watch time. To keep watchers through the mid-roll ad, time it so the mid-roll happens before the most interesting part of the video. Use b-roll to break up irrelevant camera sequences (such as monolouges) down to no more than 7 second. Viewers engagement require new visual stimulus or emotional connection constantly. Visual stimulus is easier to provide than an incredible written script. I highly recommend the book "How to Shoot Video that Doesn't Suck"
