Another awesome video, I am taking charge of our lawn, and taking notes 📝, we did have a lawn service but next year no lawn service, I’m going to be the lawn service, I get it with the commercial service personnel, they can only do so much to each customer’s lawn, but if your lawn service guy won’t talk to you then do it yourself like I’m going to do, Sounds like your business is booming, and you take great pride in providing a great customer service and helping them out and telling them what to do and what is wrong with their lawn, we need more technicians like you or business owners like you in that area, again great information great videos

I want to thank you and also curse at you. Until this spring I was happy with my lawn. But now I'm obsessed. And also now I have the earthwise chipper I have opposite problem of to much browns for my compost pile. It all started when I tried to identify my quack grass. Why couldn't I get rid of this 6'x6' patch over the years. I sprayed normal spray, used weed n feed, and hand picked it for years. I soon realized I had several bad grasses. Quack, poa Anna, and bunching tall fescue. I have painstakingly hand painted blades of quack all summer. I shoukd have nuked an entire zone. But also I think I'm getting lots of quack grass seed germination. My spring overfeeding didn't go real well because I watered to long and the peat moss and seed washed off some big spots. Just a slight slope. Also a few dry hot days fried some baby KBG. But my labor day seeding is growing in much thicker. I used more heavy top soil and peat. And only 7 min water times. All the fescue was cut out and mew sod has blended in. Im getting compliments on my yard again. Oh also you got me using micro nutrients, milorganite, Humate. My neighbor is now feeling bad he has 60% bunching fescue. I know he is. Plus he has big patches of rye. I know he looks at my 100 %KBG with envy. You may have taken away many fishing trips this summer but my yard is kooking good. How deep do I go down this rabbit hole??

Great Explanation! I am a LCO in CT and this year is horrendous for weeds/crabgrass. I do 2 apps of Dimension .15 full rate and still had issues. I have used Prodiamine in the past and I am thinking next year doing what you have suggested. Also, you mentioned the battery operated backpack sprayer. I purchased 2 Maruyama battery sprayers about 5 years ago. I use them every day and I have not had an issue with either one. They are nicads, but the new ones are lithium batteries. They are excellent. I can spray for 1-2 days on one battery. I keep a spare in the truck.

Here on the Central Coast of California, we get the wonderful weed called (Malva neglecta) common Mallow. These weeds are the Ironman of weeds, excepting some of the Thistle varieties, which are also very common. Last year, I picked a relatively small Mallow weed from soft/ sandy soil in our yard with a 4-foot root; it just kept going and going! Interestingly, both the Mallow and Milk Thistle are edible, but curses to you ever invasive Yellow Star Thistle- curses, I say!! Haha, I don't use many chemicals in the yard for controlling invasive weeds; I have a sturdy hand-pick and lots of sweat... Thanks, and take care!

Hi PLG We live in East Tennessee, I am thinking of taking over the maintenance of our grass, not the mowing I have a service that mows weekly using a riding mower on the mulch setting so the clippings are put back into the grass. I would like to take over the chemical maintenance portion. We have approximately 14,000 square feet of grass, we live on a lake. What I found using an app is that we have Corn Speedwell, Sticky Chipweed, Crab Grass, Tall Fescue, Annual Bluegrass, Poverty Grass, and Kentucky Bluegrass. These variations seem to be throughout the yard. There are also multiple bare spots showing some soil and weeds. Our soil is basically clay very hard to find decent soil. We have 2,800 sq ft front yard, 2,200 sq ft side yard, and 9,000 sq ft back yard on the lake. I have a Scotts Classic Drop Spreader and a 4 gallon backpack sprayer. Can you suggest a DIY procedure for me to get started to get one grass growing and get rid of weeds as much as possible. We live in a small town with a Lowes, Walmart, Rural King, and Home Depot a few miles away. I asked a local service to view the areas and offer suggestions it seemed very expensive with no guarantees, one of them offered an 8 step program beginning in March and ending in December, another offered a proposal using google earth said they did not need to come out and look at the areas and the problems. Any suggestions you could offer as a starting point would be appreciated. Its the 25th of April 2023. Thanks I enjoyed your Video it was easy to understand as a beginner. Can you suggest other videos that would assist in this adventure.

few bits of information. 1. if you have fescue and bluegrass you will not achieve a mono stand / 1 grass type. they compete heavily against one another. 2. annual grasses are commonly taken care of by products like drive xlr8 mixed with another chemical called a methylated seed oil. you can find pre mixed products at your local home depot like the image crabgrass killer. 3. weeds need selective herbicides. I prefer the pro-sumer lines like t-zone and speedzone. you can mix it with drive xlr8. 4. calibration is key. watch my calibration video and figure out how to evenly spray 1 gallon across 1,000 sq ft. it will teach you what the spray needs to look like when spraying properly. 5. general fertilizer instructions would be to calibrate and put down 4lbs of nitrogen per 1000 sq ft over the course of the entire growing season. that's not 4lbs of product. if you take the bag number ie. first number on the bag is 20, then divide 100 by 20 you get 5. that 5 represents how many lbs of product to get to 1lbs of N. I like to apply .5N every 4 weeks.

Hello Pest and Lawn Ginja, First and foremost, Thank you for all of your very-informative and extremely helpful videos. As a newbie lawn caretaker, your video have helped me tremendously. I finally learnt about preemergents and am very interested in using the Prodiamine on my grass. I am in Michigan, the temps currently are in the 20s-30s. I have Kentucky Bluegrass. I usually see a lot of Canada thistle, crabgrass and some broadleaf weeds on my yard, some dandelions too now and then. I dethatched my grass last year after watching your videos and fertilized it with Propeat, and it really helped, but the weeds still showed up now and then. I am wondering if this Prodiamine application once the temperature crosses 35, and then a Dithiopyr application in May/June would work for the weed problem I am facing, or do I need to go for something stronger? Thank you.

When I did landscaping we would cut the water off to the Bermuda grass (summer grass) for about 2 weeks before we thatched (power rake) then we would mow as close to the soil as possible and then overseed. Sometimes we would put manure over the seed to help germination and keep birds from eating all the seed.

My question is aftergermination begins, does the majority of crabgrass seed germinate very early on? Say, 30 days from right after germination begins 75% of seeds for that season have germinated?. Making that first application of pre emergent the most important by a large degree? Or do the seeds germinate at a relatively even rate all summer long?
@pestandlawnginja

crabgrass germination is 5 days. needs 55 degree plus soil temps for for 5 days straight. Crabgrass is an annual grass and germinates in the spring.

I've touched on that a few times. the issue is this, it all depends on the ground temps being lower than 50 degrees for a proper application. if you put it down anytime after you run the risk of the weed seeds having already started or completed the germination process. get a digital meat thermometer from walmart and be sure to get your pre emergent down before it hits 50 degrees.

Great question. I would do 2 apps per year with prodiamine. Right before ground temps get up to 45 early spring and right when the daytime temps get regularly below 80. Between those apps I would consider a treatment or two with dithiopyr assuming the daytime temps are below 85. Most weeds to actively germinate above 85 degrees. Other than that glyphosate (non selective herbicide) will be your friend for killing everything off. You'll need to do a reapplication every two to three months or as the weeds come up. It's important to remember ore emergents disrupt current weed seed germination. If the weed has already germinated over the past 18 months It will still emerge and that's why we call herbicides post emergents.

Hey Ben! Thanks for the sub. Stickers can take about 18 months to get rid of if they're a biennial like the ones I delt with. If your soil temps are above 55 degrees I would consider blanket herbicide apps every 4 to 6 weeks to ensure they dont get to seed. Then focus on the fall pre emergent.

Hi, need some help! We are probably very late and havent applied a pre or a post emergent. Should we start with a post emergent to kill existing crabgrass and then apply pre emergent? Should we water the lawn a day or two after the post emergent and then do the pre emergent? Ours is bermuda grass. Should we also apply any nitrogen fertilizers? Sorry for all the questions, but I am quite new to lawn care.
@pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja 5 жыл бұрын
Pre -emergents are for pre seed germination. So you would want to apply a pre emergent pre 47ish degrees F ground temp. Post emergents are for when the weed emerges and presents itself to you. Pre emergents need to be watered in and post emergents should stay dry according to the label recommendations. Bermuda grass is a very hungry grass in general. contact your local agricultural department extensions for local recommendations on how many lbs of nitrogen should be applied per season. This number will most likely fall between 4 and 7lbs per season of N.

I've been doing this a very long time and haven't experienced many issues with trees dying but the risk is there. when it comes to pre emergents i haven't really seen much of an issue.

@pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja 6 жыл бұрын
Hey matt. These are great questions. The function of prodiamine is to disrupt the germination. If you overseed and force germination over two weeks you can apply prodiamine 2 weeks later. However, the prodiamine will overwinter causing seed germination disfunction the following spring. IMO you will not have a successfull germination next spring due to the prodiamine application from the late fall. You may be able to get around this little issue by doing a spring aeration or power rake followed by an overseed. Disrupting the soil will cause some failure in the prodiamine pre emergent. You'll need to force spring germination making sure there's plenty of water on the soil. You can then in return apply another dose of prodiamine 2 to 4 weeks later. You may cause other weed seeds to germinate in the process and in return will need to spot spray with a post emerging herbicide.

Yes you can. My suggestion is to do the math on the hot times of the year and see how many months of control you need during the 55 degree soil temps and 70 degree soil temps and avoid a time frames that go higher than that. You need to be careful with pre emergents. You don't want to over apply, over doing it will eventually make it so the seeds get used to it and form an immunity.

I've never experienced the gumming up with prodiamine. Is it because you are not mixing the WDG well into water before throwing it into the tank? Time would have been better served discussing the difference in the chemicals' half-lives and how that impacts control than the germination comments (maybe?). I thought indaziflam (Specticle FLO) should have been presented as a warm season option as it provides post-emergent (and post-germination!!!) control of poa in addition to the pre-emergent control. Fall application of Specticle and spring application of Prodiamine is perhaps the better program. Anywho, all have the same mode of action so we are all doomed

@pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja 3 жыл бұрын
interesting conclusion. I haven't seen any longitudinal studies that support your theories. The issue is prodiamine does indeed have root pruning properties but for smaller rooted plants. If you were speaking of the active ingredients in preen I might be on board with this. Please send some research materials in a comment. As for heavily damaging maples, willows etc that is commonly linked to the use of ester herbicides. Prodiamine doesn't have lifetime residuals. 90 days and its gone. matter of fact, it acts like a wax barrier on the surface. once its disturbed you can seed without any issues. I specifically laid prodiamine, then weeks later power raked, aerated and seeded without any issues. I have done this with fescue.

It's all about the soil temps. before 55 degrees in the spring time and before 65 degrees in the fall time. be sure to keep on the proper watering to keep it active. If it heats up or dries out it also goes away.
