I love how Bard's kit also expresses his Cosmic Indifference. The roaming to collect chimes, abandoning your ADC to die, the Ultimate that can affect both enemies and allies, his tunnel that lets him disregard the laws of physics and be the Cosmic Vagabond of Summoner's Rift...It's excellent.

Bard is unique because he's a champion whose lore and gameplay are one and the same if not less. He's True Neutral. You either hate or love him, that's your decision. Bard don't care. Bard does his own things and along the way he'll help you.

I feel like Bard would actually be a very limited character in a story, considering his purpose. Yes, you could make something truly beautiful with Bard, but probably not with a lot of character to it, UNLESS you went out of your way to make it an interpretation of what Bard would do in a certain situation. Would Bard kill if the safety of the universe was decided by the existence of a single human? Would Bard be willing to communicate and bond with individual beings if it meant making his job easier? Would there really be some deeply hidden soul, within bard, that subtly communicates these strange patterns of behavior? His role in the world answers most of these questions already and they don't really allow him to be a character, because he really isn't. If you were willing to change that, or at least make it clear from the outset, that you are going to do that, perhaps there could be something much greater there. As it stands, bard feels like a champion that will only ever work as sign. A sign of what is to come, and a force that will act upon the danger of it's surroundings, but not those who surround him. And unlike Ryze, he doesn't have any explicit humanity within him, so there's no real way a character could be there. He'd sort of be a plot device or status-quo tool. A fucking beautiful plot device and status-quo tool, but still.

The way bard moves around in game and in the animated teaser shows him as a sort of whimsical character in my opinion. If all he cares about is his job as a cosmic caretaker, they make it apparent he (it?) is having a good time doing it. I think this ties into his gameplay - a roaming support without much attachment to his partner in the bot lane, who comes back to the bot lane only to keep things going well while he messes with the other lanes

pretty accurate yeah. It's also part of what makes Bard so influential. When a Bard is good, you'll see it assisting your team in crazy ways. When a Bard is bad, everyone will feel the pain. Probably explains why he's also so meme-worthy

One thing you did not mention is that Bard is deliberately featureless. He has no age, no race, no facial features and no voice. In fact the only way that we can interact with him is through his nonverbal cues and his actions and his music. I believe that it's a deliberate choice in order to make him as relatable to as many people as possible without making him exclusive to any group, race or nationality. Therefore, we as a player can assign whatever interpretation we wish as well as any emotion we think he's having. Also, real missed opportunity to talk of the uncanny valley here :(

IKR. This was one of the things i was looking forward to the most. Alongside the fact that his design for clothes carefully takes bits from multiple cultures, but doesn't feel like it remotely fits a specific one. Things like using mantels, along with large bronze-looking rings, and a native looking mask. The objects he has on his feet, the huge horn on the back of his head, and the fucking chimes. There's so much that could be investigated about all these individual pieces. SHit like that is what makes Bard my favorite champion, and one of my favorite... THINGS in all of gaming and fiction. I have seriously never seen anything like it.

I totally get what you mean! Bard is "The Caretaker" Not in the sense that he takes care of people, but he takes care of a place. If someone tries to burn down his place, he'd destroy them. If something inside threatens to take over and destroy the place, he'll stop them. He takes care of the universe and material world, but not the things in it. He must make sure the house stands, but everything else is meaningless.

another really interesting part about bard's "face:" the placement of the eyes and mouth shape an equilateral triangle, which are always used as a basic construct for a spectrum. He embodies every aspect of life combined - balance, above all else. Hence, the triangle.

I have a different interpretation about the Bard: Mountain video. The old man seemed to be trying to bring the orb to the top of the mountain and didn't make it. The orb started to fall back towards the enemy army and Bard arrives to "save the day". I think he completed the old man's task... I don't see it as him "taking the orb away from everyone" he was like a sort of "deus ex machina" figure, completing the objective to save the people... it doesn't really show everyone saved or anything at the end, but it has that resolved feeling and I think by bringing the orb to the top of the mountain it was the "right" thing to do morally. Just my opinion, I hope it made sense. Love the videos. Have a good weekend! :)

This is, in my honest and humble opinion, one of the best uses for lack of lore, IF NOT the best. It all simply adds up to the mystery that the character's surrounded by.

Bard DESPERATELY needs more story, even if it's just another thing like Bard: Mountain where it's just describing him reclaiming something or taking back something by "force" aka using his Q to trap the person and taking it back, something like that would be very interesting to read. Maybe even Bard interacting with Zoe since they are both Cosmic "Gods" that do there parts, I can see Bard and newely released Zoe being a duo of some sort, Bard being the silent noise making puffy "cute" thing and Zoe constantly trying to pull some sort of reaction or speech out of him. Really hope to see it.

Stories for Bard could be really interesting, a series of Fables in which Bard interacts with the plot by performing his only function and the P.o.V characters construct meaning and morality from it.

The deal with Bard is that he doesn't give a shit and that's why is fun to play as him :D Who needs teammates when you have adorable meeps! I like to think about the concept that he is a Bard, not *the* Bard. Like we see with the Green Lantern Corp, there's one Lantern for every section of the galaxy, to protect it and maintain order ...and I like Green Lanterns. Also, where's Necrit?

One of the biggest reasons to why I love Bard is because he is one of the, if not the most important character in the league of legends universe. He can literally just swoop in, and take super dangerous artifacts and items that could destroy the universe and everything with it, and seal it away to never be used again. I wonder how many times he has done it, how many times has the saved the universe from total destruction? If he didn’t do what he do, everything could be in total chaos, no one would come and take the powers away.

I think it was stated by a Rioter that the magical orb was possible a Cosmic Dragon Egg. That would certainly explain Bard's interest in it. He doesn't care what happens to humanity as a whole, but that egg could birth a Cosmic Dragon that would fill the universe with new starts and life. It may not happen for thousands or even millions of years, but it will ultimately be a important enough for Bard to concern Itself with.

I think the most unique thing about Bard for me, is just... How he fascinates me. He's a being that is clearly doing good, but I also find it interesting and even amazing how we as simple creatures cannot even describe him, what he does, what his purpose is. So we speak in ways we are familiar of, morality and emotions. It really shows that we are simply too small to even begin to comprehend what Bard truly is, and yet we all know that what he is doing is for our benefit, even if it's merely a side effect to his true intentions.

I really like Bard. I would like to mention, that his gameplay also connects to the concept of somebody who doesn't care. I think that he looks and walks like this, because he doesn't want people to be afraid of him and make his job harder.

The attraction between molecules is the electromagnetic force Sorry couldn't help myself Bard's Q is similar to the strong force which binds nuclei together Bard's E is similar to small particles which can tunnel because of quantum mechanics which also applies to nuclei. So I'd probably say Bard is a nucleus or maybe the strong force.

Hey, I'm about halfway through, and the "elder god" conversation you're referencing sounds like it was the one I had with someone else in the comments of one of your videos. Whatever the actual case may be, I'm glad you made the video. In that same comment, I also mentioned Nagakaboros as an additional interesting "cosmic horror" that's goals seem to align mostly with humanity. Also, a lot of your videos seem to reference Nagakaboros as a sea god, when it's actually the amoral manifestation of ambition, life, motion, and change, which is apparently best represented on Runterra by the ocean. Illaoi even mentions that Nagakaboros drives the sun through the sky. In any case, I find it interesting that League has made 2 elder-god-ish beings without either really being antagonistic towards mankind. Maybe we'll get a god of the Void some day.

I'd like to know your opinion on Kindred, not as *Interpretation* of death but rather the *embodiment* of death, not just in Runeterra but the whole universe, as it was hinted by some Rioters that that was what Kindred truly were. Kinda like Death from the Sandman comics

Personally I'd love to have another champion similar to Bard and Kindred. ie a champion that is a fundamental law of nature personified that knows Bard and is able to give background via his/her quotes on what Bard is and other beings like him. Like where did he come from? When did he exist? Are him and Kindred gods? if not, then are there gods, and who are they?

Great stuff. It certainly covered some elements of bard I didn't necesarily think about before, specifically with the cosmic nihilistic feeling of Bard. I am kinda bummed that you didn't cover some curious elements on how Riot tried to make Bard feel like a cosmic being that is in no way leaning to a specific culture (despite the studio ghibly inspiration) from the clever design for his clothes, in combination to the native-like mask. Or perhaps cover the reason why they involve chimes so much in his design. Maybe they were chosen to help communicate the relaxed, cute and peaceful nature of bard as a being? Some elements of his design like his incredibly abnormal body-shape, or the choice of making him communicate with music, and nothing more I feel could also work very well for the discussion. I do understand why Bard appears like a character that has very little to talk about, but I do still think there's a lot more to speak of. Still, one video is enough and it certainly still covered Bard and helped talk about some of the reasons why he's such a fascinating design in general; not just for League of legends. So thanks for that

Here's a bard lore I made.. At the very beginning of our world bard entered our universe to prevent any major shifts in power causing a disturbance to the meeps he watches over. The meeps are cosmic entities that appear in realms only when there is perfect balance in one universe. Bard looks over these meeps to keep balance in that specific universe/realm. Because bard creates balance in realms, the meeps reward bard with a small portion of energy from their universe. And how the bard you know today was made was when a powerful being named bard trying to make peace on his planet was chosen by another caretaker who was no longer able to watch over the multiverse. The caretaker asked bard if he wanted to take his place, and knowing how much he could do with his new power he agreed and the old caretaker fused his power into bard giving him the ability to travel realms and create balance where it was needed and so now bard wanders the multiverse wishing to establish balance in as many realms possible before he has to make another caretaker until the multiverse will finally be at peace and happiness for everybody. In medieval Gaelic and British culture, a bard was a professional story teller, verse-maker and music composer, employed by a patron (such as a monarch or noble), to commemorate one or more of the patron's ancestors and to praise the patron's own activities. If we could have Bard in the Star Guardians skin line, I was thinking the mysterious Light of the First Star could be the power of Bard, the First Star and creator deity of all Star Guardians. He’s an enigma, he empowers all kinds of people who take the oath but allows them to fall indiscriminately, his purpose is to steer the world away from utter destruction and catastrophe but seems to have no material wants or fears. His meeps could be little starlight beings or unassigned familiars, not taking any certain shape because they haven’t been sent to a particular Star Guardian yet

I just wonder what his connection to music is. In his lore his chimes were referred to as choire and the champion himself is called Bard. Like I kind of get it, because Bards sing about stuff that happened but like wouldn't Bard be a thing actual Bards sing about?

I assume the choice for chimes comes from the bizarre, peaceful and whimsical sounds they make. I also heard an interesting comment once that described why Bard only spoke with the sounds of chimes: "Music is the universal language." With Bard being a cosmic entity that affects far more than just humans, perhaps it makes sense for him to not limit himself to human concepts like speaking in human languages.

I really enjoy bards story and its always been interesting as a character design both in lore and gameplay. They way i always see it is that while its not clear that he cares about people, he still saves them. In his gameplay he allows himself to care for his lane partner while he collects artifacts. Now granted it seems worthless to the enimies, they are broken destroied chimes of no value, except when you realize that bard is preventing them from retriving them. As he gains them he gains power and like you said, thats his function. But as his title gos, its not a caretaker of relics, but it is for those people. His entire kit is to prevent the enimes from acting or harming his teamates. The video clip also proves this, while the qay you saw it was completly plausable, it was missused, it had to be :reclaimed". But the major picture is, he was caretaking the people. The thought in bards mind is what if the noxians had the relic, now everyonw will die. And you can tell he is humanlike because he isnt omnipotent, he cant tell when evrything is happening, only when a massive surge of dangerous energy was used.

you made me think of the entities of Bloodborne. For what I got from the lore is that contrary to the Elder Gods who are actively hostile at worst or dismissive at best, the Bloodborne entities SPOILER: don't really want to harm but to communicate with mankind, but their attempts usually end up driving those people mad and turn them into monsters, "beasts" if you will. OK, their motivations are actually opposite but the fact that human morality compass is a foreign concept to them

Bard really hasn't a real humanoid form, he's just a fistful of cosmic breath. You can see it in it's death animation and can be explained in the way it moves. What we normally see as the image of bard is just a costume and the Wolf interaction Kindred has with it also confirms this. Please man, I'd be fully heartfilled if you just read this.

I don't know why, but I always thought of Bard as something like Tom Bombadiel. Bard just strikes me as that kind of character. Super strong and important, but jovial and goofy most of the time.

One thing that I was hoping you would touch on, but that you may not be aware of is that the Bard we see isn’t necessarily Bard’s true form. What I mean by that, is that the Bard we see appears to be more of a suit for Bard the entity. You can see that in how his body appears to be a lot of fabric stitched together, and mostly from his death animation. When Bard dies, he begins to leak out this sort of cosmic dust out of his mask while his body deflated into a pile of cloth. A lot of Bard players posit that this is the real Bard leaving after his suit is destroyed.

Bard is a reminder of the quote; "If mankind died overnight, the sun would still rise tomorrow." Humanity isn't the focus of life, the universe, and everything. There is no rule saying we cannot be replaced. In this way: Bard is correct to let them die. The survival of humanity means little, when they can ensure the survival of the world itself. I consider Bard to be golem-esque, it has a purpose. It has free will enough to complete this purpose in complex ways; but it is NOT truly alive.

For those most familiar with his Marvel incarnation, the original Odin liked to disguise himself as a mortal and wander Midgard, sometimes seeking wisdom and sometimes just traveling. He was also a relatively benevolent god, though considering that his blood-brother is Loki Liesmith and one of his sons is the often-bloodthirsty Thor, that's not saying a lot. (We don't have any stories of Odin directly intervening just to save some humans, for instance.) He (like many wise Norse beings) enjoys poetry, which connects indirectly with bardic traditions. Of course, his design and actions don't really reflect Odin... I'd also like to repeat my long-time-repeated suggestion to compare and contrast character design in textual/visual media via visual description/depiction.

So after the Mordekaiser video I went back and read the lore of some more Shadow Isles champs, and now I'm wondering what your thoughts on Thresh would be. To me, he probably has the most bizarre, confusing backstory of any undead champ since his lore update, and I'd love to hear how you rank his current background to his original one.

Hello! I love it how you mentioned the anthropomorphic form of bard and I have a theory that bard chose that form because humans described him like that, not because he needed, but it's more convenient for him to some extent. Another "proof" to that is that when Bard dies in the game a blob of light escapes his body that seems to be empty, just a hollow ballon like body. I noticed that you constantly mentions Kindred. Can you do a analysis on them?

Yeah, so you pretty much see him in the same light as me. In fact, that's the way I think Riot should go with the new lore for Soraka. Targon aspects seem to be able to appear in some form, but they could make Soraka a spirit. A concept. Just like Bard. While Bard could be some sort of self preservation mecanism of Runaterra to keep existing, regardless of human feelings or morals, Soraka could be the concept of healing and regeneration. They could make it like it's not that Soraka heals people, but that Soraka is an artist's view on healing. Something that explains things that are harder to understand for Runaterrans. When you're ill and recover, when you're about to die of something unavoidable and suddenly you "get lucky" and survive, when you lose hope but the world seems to give you happy things to recover your hope... that could be Soraka. I think it would be very interesting if they started exploring Runaterra's mythology, but leaving the tangible stuff and diving into the complex concepts Runaterrans can't wrap their heads around that they decide to simplify with a deity or a mythological creature.

Can you do a theory about star guardians, more exactly about their star shape and why is different. Soraka seems to be special because she is the only one with a six edged star, the rest having just 4 and 5 edge stars. I'm really curious about what you think

But he actually fit cosmic horror quite well, by definition a elder god entity does not care about humanity, we do not even register for them, hence they can not be antagonistic against humanity, the horror part of cosmic horror comes not from the adversarial situation, but from the realization than in this cold vast universe, we are inconsequential. He is a cosmic horror, but why we do not see the horror part? not because anithign he does or is, but because some people arbitrarly decided to worship him or think of him as someoen workign for their good, but this is no more than the illussions people create to blind themselves from the reality of cosmic horror, this is why the lore make it sounds liek a good guy, even tough as you noted, he is amoral.
