It’s time for another edition of our show the Hit Song Redux where we travel back to a week in the golden era of the rock and roll and re-rank the top 10 songs of THAT SPECIFIC week based on their legacy since THEIR PEAK POSITION ON THE BILLBOARD HOT 100. Just to clarify, this isn’t my Top 10. This is the actual Top 10 from this same week in 1983 . As always, we include your stories, your dedications, and get a first hand look what the artists themselves have to say about their hit songs. This show is a Tribute to my hero Casey Kasem. So this time we travel back to December of the year 1983.
So, its been 39 years. But back then at the movie theaters you could catch Tom Cruise in one his early roles... All the Right Moves. Or could see the multi-Oscar winner The Right Stuff which actually bombed at the box office, but picked up steam on home video. Or there was the all-time holiday classic, A Christmas Story. On television you could catch the first season of Fraggle Rock, Love Connection, The A-Team, and Friday Night Videos or you could run to the mall and watch parents kill each other to try and get a cabbage patch kid for their children.
So, let’s get into the countdown.
Coming in at #10 it’s the smooth voiced cross dressing brit and his colorful band , Culture Club with their lead-off single from their quadruple platinum sophomore album Colour by Numbers. The song is Church of the Poison Mind. Harbingers of the “new pop” movement that swept through the UK charts in the early 80s, Culture Club consisted of Boy George on vocals, Roy Hay on guitar and keyboards, Mikey Craig on bass, and John Moss on drums. Their first album ‘Kissing to Be Clever’ featured the #2 US hit Do you Really Want to Hurt Me, and then followed that up with another #2 song, Time (Clock of My Heart).
By this time, George was one of pop’s major talking points with his dreadlocks, make-up, and androgynous persona. The launch of MTV ensured that many UK acts were infiltrating the US charts and the colorful persona of George, coupled with the irresistible charm of Culture Club’s melodies, effectively broke them in America early in 1983. Church Of the Poison Mind, helped push this success forward. It was a stomping, Tamla-Motown style song with Helen Terry singing backing vocals. Although Church of the Poison Mind would peak at #10 in the US, it reached #2 in the UK, only kept from the top spot by David Bowie's ‘Let's Dance’.

1982-1985 was probably the best 4 years in music of the decade. They had so many great songs throughout the 80's that the decade will always be known for the decade of music. No other decade ever came close, and will never come close again. Long live the 80's. So many genres of awesome music.

I always thought 1986 was the best year. Master of Puppets, Reign in Blood, Peace Sells, Life's Rich Pageant, The Queen is Dead, Rapture, So, License to Ill, Control, Graceland. That's 10 albums off the top of my head that are all considered the very best of one of the best from some of the biggest musicians of the time. Then there are the singles when the decade was all its own with none of the 70s hangover. It's just an opinion, but for me I would take 86 music over any other year.

@@superturtle61177 I dont argue that 1986 was a great year, but it seems 82-85 were just the best ones. The Cars, Duran Duran, Chicago, Air Supply, Twisted Sister, Quiet Riot, man just too many to list. No disrespect to the rest of the 80's though.

@@hank_mohaski And don't forget "Greed is good." You are dead right. Overall the '80s sucked *massively.* Even most of the music went to shit after '84. Btw, the threat of nuclear war is even more eminent today. To give you an idea, the Doomsday Clock was at 3 minutes to midnight in 1983; whereas, today it is *100 seconds* to midnight.

@@bigneiltoo What exactly in my comments led you to that question? No, we shouldn't be sending billions to the Ukraine. The 80's kinda sucked, and reading these rose-colored comments about how wonderful that decade was are short-sighted. Politics and politicians, both side of the aisle, ruin it for everybody, in any decade. And every generations pop culture is as good/bad as every other generation. I wish Count Basie were still around, but that doesn't mean the 70s sucked, which seems to be the Professors whole misguided belief, that today's music sucks but Culture Club were awesome. PFFFFT....

What a year, 1983. Such memories. I was 12 in December. After years of active alcoholism, my mother had just completed 8 months at a women’s rehabilitation facility. My mom finally sober, I could just be a kid for the first time in my life. All that fear and anxiety of my homelife was behind me. From this point on, life became really really good.

Compared to today's music damn the 80s music was AMAZING! I'm from the 80s graduated 85. But actually seeing today's and my days music WOW I love 80s music all over again, even the songs I didn't like in the 80s I like now.. they actually had talent unlike today's music.

There is real music out there, it's just not on the "charts" anymore. The "charts" are now a platform to advertise product rather than the celebration of talent they once were. That's why I "tune in" here every day, it's a celebration of talent. Thanks Professor!

I had just graduated in June of '83. In December I was in my first apartment with my best friend and we had finally made it to the long coveted freedom of adulthood. The music of the 70s and 80s was so integral to our development, our identities. When I hear those songs today I'm instantly transported at least emotionally to a time of vibrance and hope and especially appreciating deep bonds of friendship. After 45 years we are still friends. In agreement that we had the best soundtrack to grow up with.

@@PraveenSrJ01 I don't remember. But I had just left my first job ($1.85hr +tips) and taken my second job which was min. wage @ $4.25hr) and we were still struggling because I was only working 30-32 hours per week. I ended up enlisting in January '85.

You asked what happened to music. Back in the Spring of '86 I was a young sailor stationed in Scotland, and one Saturday while washing my car and listening to the top 40 (on VOA radio I believe), the fill-in host mentioned the studio heads had gotten together in California and had a meeting where they decided to shift from hard rock/heavy metal to rap music. The host went on to say they designated one from among them to meet with the big name promoter of rap music at the time, I believe it was Russell Simmons but I could be wrong. He then said after the break he'd be playing the next song on the countdown which was the first attempt to get kids used to listening to rap, a re-make of Aerosmith's 'Walk this Way' with Run DMC. Made no sense to me at the time. They were making money hand over fist on hard rock/heavy metal, why change to rap? It ended up affecting a lot of genres of music, including pop & smooth R&B. It also had a devastating affect on the community I grew up in in East Toledo. After I got out of the Navy in January of 1990 I saw a huge change in the white culture back home in my old neighborhood. Without going into further details I'll just say I've often wondered if that was the objective all along, for whatever reason. There were bands that had music recorded that all of a sudden couldn't get their music label to release it. Would like to ask you to research this topic and find out what really happened and why, although it might be deemed controversial if your conclusion is the same as mine. Love this channel, keep rollin' and strollin' putting out the videos.

Around the same time (1985) Television decided to promote unattractive women. Benny Hill's Angels were gone. Three's Company became Three's a Crowd. Ally Sheedy was portrayed as being sexy. Never knew the name of the individual who did that.

Was a time when the owners of the privat prison industry met the music bosses and some rappers to push gangster rap. Have a look at the statistics how the prison population has skyrocketed in the US since the 80's. It is only a coincidence of course.

I can’t help but think of, The Legend of Billie Jean, every time I hear, Love is a Battlefield. Singing, Huey Lewis and the News or Billy Joel on the way to his band practice. I was 8 in 1983, and have great memories of singing with my dad in his car, or listening to music through his practice PA that his stereo was ran through. He’s been gone for 8 years now, and your channel has helped me heal from that. Thank You, Adam!

I am 57 and find plenty of music I like but you can no longer rely on the radio and top xx lists to find it. Bands don't even have to be signed to release music. There are so many sources with so much material that you will never find it all. Some of it isn't good some of it is. It's just harder to find all of it.

1983 was such a wonderful year for me! 16 years old with my first driver's license in my wallet and these tunes on the radio in my first car, a 1973 Vega that my Dad had driven back and forth to work for 9 1/2 years. So long ago but somehow still fresh in my mind. So many good things from then. I wish I was Marty McFly so I could hop in Doc Brown's Delorean and go back to stay and go through it all again. Back before Tic Toc and MTV was just kicking off. Starting work after school at Little Caesars Pizza and hitting concerts at Toledo Sports Arena with the paychecks. '83 to '87 I got to see a lot of the top bands. First concert was Hall and Oates on the H2O tour. Great times! Thanks for bringing back the memories!

I graduated High School in ‘76 so I was fortunate enough to experience the music from the ‘70’s forward. I think the advent of music videos helped ‘80’s music tremendously. There have been many great songs and bands since but the ‘80’s were special. So many memories. Lost my wife to cancer in July 2021 and some of these ‘80’s tunes bring back bittersweet memories. Such a memory trip. I was 17 in 83 and a senior in high school when this list came out. Such a variety of music you won't see that any more Quiet Riot and Culture Club on the same list? Not today, now days it's all the same cookie cutter can't sing bands. I still fondly remember Friday Night Videos and as I didn't have cable in my rural home this was my MTV. I spent the time hitting record as soon as the next video started and then if it was one I had or a song I didn't like, I erased it and restarted the wait. I made 2 8-hour VHS tapes that way and still have not only the tapes but the VCR i recorded them on. Such a great time. Now I have all but two of these on CD, I don't have Islands in the Stream as I was never into the country sound that much. I respect the song a lot and have always liked Kenny but the song didn't do anything for me. The other song was the Uptown Girl. I couldn't stand the 80's Billy Joel. Loved the 70's but not the 80's I go through and play the rest every so often. Thanks for highlighting those memories POR.

1983 - I graduated high school in June. Michael Jackson's Thriller will always be the album I think of, but so many great songs, albums and musicians. I'm always so blown away with Billy Joel's range in genres and vibes. So many different sounding songs in his repertoire. I can't think of any Billy Joel song I do not like.

I started with my current employer in January of 1983. So next month it will be 40 years. 1983 was a HUGE year for me. I moved to a big city where I knew no one and started my career. But music was my constant companion, as it was for so many other people. I remember the old guys at work would even sing along to Michael Jackson. They were probably younger than I am now. And of course there was MTV. Thanks for the reminders of those days, Adam.

The years 1983 & 1984 were life changing for me. It’s when I discovered my true love for music. I’d listen to Casey’s AT40 religiously every Sunday night on my Sony Boombox! From Thriller, to Colour By Numbers, all these songs are still the soundtrack to my life…every single day! When I met Culture Club on their tour, in 2016, I told them how much their music influenced my life, and they absolutely loved hearing it! I’m eternally grateful to all these bands, and all their songs for helping shape my life! Cheers! 🤘🏻

In 1983, I was a freshman in college, studying Geology, 19 years old. I was pretty deep into Peter Gabriel, but the instant I heard Big Country, I was blown away! I played The Crossing so much, I about wore the tape out! If you have never listened to that album, other than the title track, you missed out!

One of my favorites was "In A Big Country" - I only had my mom's old record player at the time, with one speaker not working - so I didn't get to experience that song loud until I bought my first walkman. Truly am surprised I still have good hearing today....

There has ALWAYS been a lot of crap on the charts. I always say the cream floats floats to the top, but sometimes turds float too. The pop crap is like turds, eventually the turds sink away and only the cream remains. You need to listen to Seether, The Revivalists, and plenty of others. What the "Industry" boosts onto the charts aren't often the best, just the ones they wanna "sell' and sounds like every other"star". Many of the "stars" fade away, the real stars remain. I remember the "Eagles' seemed to be hated by the "Industry" and constantly run down by them. How many of those pop "Stars" are forgotten, and country stars are making homage albums to the Eagles.

Police - Synchronicity I was 13 in ‘83. I had my first kiss after slow dancing to “Every Breath You Take” at a Junior High dance. So I’m a little biased toward that album. But Dio “Holy Diver” and Def Leppard “Pyromania” are definitely up there, too. Love your channel, man. You’re very respectful of the 80’s nostalgia and I can tell you’re a genuine music lover. 🙌

I was 13 in 83 too! Had pyromania on cassette. I still have Rock of Ages on my phone. I about jumped off my couch when Supernatural used it in a scene for the season five finale. I loved that show as much for the music as the storyline.

I have always been a huge Huey Lewis fan. I can remember him in the 80s looking 40 and 25 years later he still looked 40 lol! I was thinking “damn, does he age at all?” I miss the 80s. Music was so real, so great. I remember sitting in my parents room listening to the radio while my mom got ready. Those were the best days! Rock on brother!

Remember the playlist I’m making for that math teacher? All these songs are in there, including Church of the Poison Mind, an underrated gem of a song. The more I tell him about how great of a year 1983 was, the more I share with him commercials, vintage MTV footage, and personal anecdotes from the Professor of Rock community about 1983, the more obsessed I get with British new wave music, the more I want to go back to 1983, Marty McFly-style. I truly believe this is one of the peak years of the 80s.

It was an awesome time and awesome music but like any time in history there was also bad going on. The music and the good of the time is worth remembering. Some of the artists used their music fame to try and help bring attention to some of the bad, Pat Benatar's "Hell is for Children" brought some attention to child abuse and was still a great song. The commercials from the 1980s are fun to watch, especially seeing the British ones compared to the North American commercials. Some late 1980s Head bangers ball is fun to watch also. Early 1980s is great but things like the headbangers ball did not start till late 1980s, the worst music from the decade is still better than much of the music now.

I’ll be 46 this year. Lived through it. And for the most part, I think we had an idea that it was great while it was happening. And I’ll tell you why. When we were born, all the Beatles were still alive. We were less than 20 years from their height. Elvis died just after I was born. We knew what the music was standing on. But it was so colorful and imaginative. And that went for every creative medium. Art, movies, music, television, it was abundant, and creative, and we knew it was newer and fresher than what mom and pop had. Yet, we also had an affinity for the clean tv shows and the rockabilly and the doo wop that they loved. But our music and television really stood out creatively because the computer age was dawning. It was fresh and new and the good stuff was floating to the top everywhere. It was He Man and Star Wars. Everything was over the top. It wasn’t until gangsta rap and grunge came along that it all began to fall. And I’m a guy that loved the early iterations of both. But it changed everything. It wasn’t fun anymore. It was dark and brooding and ugly and depressing. All those things wanted to come out of the dark and be addressed. What was quiet was now making it’s own noise. And we felt at the time and it was important and necessary. But looking back, it stole our creative escapism, for better, and for worse. So my generation saw it rise, and fall, over about a 20 year period. Now, we see all the remakes of 80’s and 90’s era art. It’s a clamoring for a more innovative and innocent time by those of my generation who are trying to recapture the moment, the vibe. It’s all a little contrived, if not nostalgic; it sells tickets for sure. But in the 80’s, it was just being done authentically, with abandon, and it felt like it.

@@rickkelley4618 I do like the way you put that, and I agree music was very exciting and fresh then. I listened to my share of dark and brooding music in the 80s, but it was lush and didn’t make us want to off ourselves. In fact, The Smiths’ lyrics often made me laugh and lifted me out of depression and they were considered the ultimate sad bedsit band. And yes, we had so many options from rockabilly to metal (I also loved Motown and Atlantic soul and 20s New Orleans jazz. I think what I meant was our expectation that life, music and art was just going to keep getting better. Now I can’t imagine a music golden age happening soon, and the remakes and endless Marvel movies (the latter whittled down to CGI nothing because they’re designed to appeal to foreign markets instead of just being appealing worldwide) don’t give me hope for the immediate future. But maybe young people will be so fed up with the current creative wasteland that they’ll discover or make new movies/music/shows.

Being Australian we had a very different chart. Some of these songs we didn't get till 84 and some where never hits for us. We also had our own hits. One thing I do remember are kids in the playground talking about who was better. Boy George or Michael Jackson. We discovered both at the same time. Also how huge Flashdance and Fame were as a movies, songs and tv show

In Britain we got most of the same stuff as America, apart from some of the boring country rock rubbish, and we exported some of the new wave synth pop things, but one of the most striking things was the music, movies, and dancing crossovers. In the space of eighteen months there were three significant all-singing and dancing movies that had huge pop hits. And they all began with F: Fame, Flashdance, and Footloose.

The early 80's music was great I wasn't always keen on the top 40 as I listened to Triple J radio in Sydney as it played all alternative/ new wave music. I remember buying the first hit for TFF on import. I still listen to the music that I loved then The Cure, Culture Club, Human League, The Jam, The Clash, B52's, UB40, The Specials, Echo & the Funnyman to name a few. I quite like Pat Benatar and I didn't mind Billy Joel but I mostly listened to JJJ radio and some of those bands crossed over to huge success on commercial radio. There was also lots of great local Aussie and Kiwi bands around at the time that you could see live on the pub scene. Great times indeed.

1983 was still a very transitional year because MTV was starting to bring in the more edgy British new wave acts, but the American top 10 still had a lot of the Kenny Rogers, Lionel Richie, air supply type of music that was permeating contemporary music at the time. You know, the soft rock sound which didn’t really end until the next year

Professor, out of all the great subject episodes you do, my favorite is the Hit Song Redux, I love it when you go back in time to a year and countdown a specific week's top 10. You really picked a great one from 39 years ago in 1983. I have every one of those songs in my record collection. That top 10 is terrific and flawless. 1983 had great music everywhere. How I miss those days. From the 90's to today, finding good music released is far more difficult. They are now hidden gems that you won't find on the top 10 of the pop charts. If the music quality could be like it was back then, I'd still be listening.

I was 11 in 1983. I say this every day: I’m so grateful to have grown up during the 1980s. So many great memories. So much great music. My parents had “Rock and Soul Part 1” on cassette and wore it out. Or should I say, my mom wore it out? I now have it on CD. I’m still shocked that many people have no idea that Slade did “Cum On Feel The Noize” first. It’s a shame you never got to interview Kevin from Quiet Riot. I think he would have loved your channel. “This Night” by Billy Joel could have been a hit song had it been released as a single. One of my favorite deep cuts. But “The Longest Time” was probably a better choice as a single. It’s a song with fingers snapping and a capella vocals. No drums. No guitars. Pretty incredible for 1983 when you think of how so many pop and rock songs back then had that big drum sound. “Say Say Say” was one of my favorites back in the day. Whatever people think of Michael Jackson based on what was reported a decade later, he truly was a genius. “Thriller” just celebrated its 40th anniversary. If you get a chance to listen to the Dolby Atmos mix on Apple Music, I highly recommend it. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and your family, Professor!

1983 was probably the year I first started paying attention to music on a regularly. I was school age, in dance classes. I'd go to friends' houses for sleepovers on the weekends and we'd stay up for Friday Night videos and/or watch Solid Gold. A great year to get into music! 😂

This was the year that I became a rocker and really got into the music of the 80's. It later opened the world of music to other decades and styles, but my heart will forever be closest to the 80's. It was Def Leppard's Pyromania that started my love for music. I remember these top 10's songs as some of the first songs that I paid close attention to, watching them on TV50 Music Videos, a station from Detroit and Video Hits, a Canadian TV show on CBC. I was 11 but I have strong memories of this year. Michael Jackson dominated the year. Only 1 single from Thriller was released in 1982, all the big hits came in '83. I was very much a fan of British new wave / synth pop even as a kid. I was into Thompson Twins, Human League, Culture Club, Heaven 17, Flock of Seagulls, etc. I recently discovered Naked Eyes, who never had a hit in the UK even though they were British. Their album Burning Bridges is great. Other songs I loved are Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse Of The Heart, Elton John's I'm Still Standing, Rod Stewart's Baby Jane. Also RIP Irene Cara. Flashdance - What A Feeling is still a fantastic song.

I was a kid in 1983, i can remember most of these songs on MTV and airwaves. Many of them i still listen to today in 2022 like Uptown Girl, ALl night long, and many others which are still damn good songs. The 80s had the best music and movies and music today will NEVER be as good nor even close to it. Great memories watching them on tv, on LP and cassette tapes and hearing when they first released.

The strange thing about the Huey Lewis 'Sports' album was its time-delay effect of becoming huge the next year in 1984. For my money the real 'impact' songs of 1983 were 1) She's a Beauty -The Tubes, 2) What a Feeling -Irene Cara, 3) Our House -Madness, 4) Come Dancing -The Kinks, 5) Rock the Casbah -The Clash, 6) Every Breath You Take -The Police, 7) I'm Still Standing -Elton John, 8) Electric Avenue -Eddie Grant, 9) Hungry Like the Wolf -Duran Duran and 10) Modern Love -David Bowie.

Huey Lewis' early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

I have a funny story about "Islands In The Stream." I was 11 when it hit #1, and a Casey Kasem listener pretty much my whole life. I thought guys from Billboard actually went to every store to count how many of each single was left, so they could accurately do the countdown. In one of our local stores, they had a section where they had the top 10 Hot 100 songs in order of chart position. Then they had the top 10 country songs. "Islands In The Stream" was #1 on both. I LITERALLY grabbed all of the 45's from the country section & moved them to the pop section, because I wanted it to drop out of #1 on the Hot 100! 🤣 I thought I was really making a difference. 😎

Islands in the Stream was the #1 song when a teacher at my school was born. You’ve seen my comments about a playlist that I’m making for him to commemorate the year he was born, 1983, right? Islands is such a great song, sung by two absolute legends, and it was a HUGE crossover, which is why I don’t think of it as just a country song. It’s one of the great pop culture phenomenons of 1983 as well. Do you have any more suggestions for what I should put on my playlist?

@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 "Urban Cowboy" the movie and soundtrack accelerated a country-pop crossover trend that was active at the start of the 80s with songs like Ronnie Milsap's "Smoky Mountain Rain," Eddie Rabbitt's "I Love a Rainy Night" and the Oak Ridge Boys' 'Elvira." The best late 70's example was probably Crystal Gayle's "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue" or Dolly Parton's "Here You Come again." Plus of course many Kenny Rogers and Anne Murray songs. Eddie Rabbitt and Crystal Gayle's crossover "You And I" was released in late 1982, but that may be of interest to you, as well as Alabama hits.

You hit the nail square on the head. They sure don’t make them like the old gems today. I remember a lot of parties (I was 19) dancing and singing along to these tune and some lesser known groups like The Nylons. Great memories and fantastic tunes. I love what you do so please keep on doing it!

Damn I so wish that you would do these more often. While my first memory of music was Wolfman Jack playing Queen's we will rock you, my obsession with music really started with ONJ's Totally Hot album. For me the early/mid eighties were the pinnacle of pop music.

I am not surprised to see Billy Joel last over time to become number one. His palette is extensive, classic, and quality. New generations are finding out about him, and he stands the test of time.

I was in boot camp in early 1986. The first time they let us go to the Navy Exchange, I bought sports on cassette. I knew I wouldn't be able to play it until graduation, but I got it anyhow. When we got back to the barracks, the company commanders were reviewing our purchases and ordered me into their office. They had a jam box and told me to put it in. We cleaned the barracks that day while jamming to the News.

The 80s were an amazing time for music. I loved the 2nd British invasion. I grew up in NY City. After high school in 82, my mom and step dad moved to puerto rico. I really didnt wanna go ,but had no choice. To my surprise, rock was huge there. But I didnt wanna be there, and had a tough time. What helped me was my neighbor's television set where I would watch MTV in its infancy for hrs, and listening to kc kasem top 40 on radio. It was was incredible. The 80s formed who I am today. Ty Came back to ny in 83 and music became a big part of my life and still is.

I was a sophomore in high school at this time and although I was primarily a heavy metal guy, I also listened to pop such as Culture Club, we all did. Who remembers Friday Night Video fights on MTV? Out of all of your top 10 countdown, Quiet Riot was the only album I bought. The rest of the songs I would record off the radio, didn’t have the funds to buy too many albums. The other thing we did was my friends and I would buy different albums and then we would pass them around so we could make our own cassette copies. We bought albums because they were the cheapest at the time, ranging from 5.99 to 8.99 if memory serves me correct. Anyway, those were great times!

When people asked me to compare the greatest year in music of the 1980's, I always had a hard time trying to pick between 1983 and 1984 until it dawned on me that the two years were a continuous awesome period in music. There have always been particular awesome periods in music, such as the summer of 1967, or the winter of 1991-1992, but those usually spanned a few months. There had never been a time of amazing music that spanned nearly two years, but this period may have been the first I was aware of.

When the 80s started, i was in college & my dad was working in Peru. After a couple of years, my mom asked my dad for an Xmas present of plane tickets for us kids to go visit for Xmas. I ended up taking time off my schooling & stayed just over 2 months. When we had arrived, we had been introduced to several of the younger office workers at my dad's job. They were a great group & took us out dancing at various clubs. I have many fond memories of dancing to Culture Club, especially to Karma Chameleon as it was played frequently. When i hear it now, i'm transported back to a most excellent vacation & an extremely lovely holiday romance. When we first met, communicating was a little difficult, but music smoothed the way. 😉

I was never a pop fan, but I remember when Quiet Riot made the charts with Come on Feel the Noize. It was finally acceptance to the Heavy Metal/Hard Rock I grew up on in the 70's and the early 80's. Many of my Metal friends said it was a "sell out", but I took it as an open door to Heavy Metal newbies and opened up the genre for many more fans.
