many say that they kill each other, and in the end you are left with only one chromis in the tank, or perhaps a pair

I’ve got several customers with long established schools of 3-4” long chromis. Many people care for chromis improperly and in that scenario perhaps aggression and mortality are more common.

I have found that as long as there is enough hiding places for them when the lights go out they will survive. If they lack a space to hide for "sleep" then they will kill each other off until they reach that equilibrium for numbers and space.
