I am glad you had a good experience at the school and no doubt you are continuing to put that training to good use. I wouldn't mind doing a video regarding the intermediate class at all. Much of the advice for the basic class would be still very appropriate. The main difference is the projects that get completed along the way. You will definitely get into more advanced nav methods as well with Pioneer Scout. I hope to see out for that one in 2019!

Black Hat Bushcraft I know the land nav is more intense (pace counts, mapping, alternate forms of land nav). I am horrible at land nav. Actually I've gotten lost in mall parking lots before. Lol. From chatting with other folks who have taken the course I know that a successful bow drill is a must to patch. But aside from that, I have no idea what skills to practice. This layout you did for the basic was excellent. Also from watching the pathfinder learning center I know that the basic I took 2 years ago is not the same course taught today. Many upgrades and evolutions (which is good). I don't like to go into anything unprepared. Being at least familiar with concepts taught before heading to the class puts me one step closer to success.....I hate failure Keep making the good stuff Matt and I'll keep watching it. Thanks!!!

I was thinking that at one time it did. I am not sure when that changed. Basically the topics are all centered around survival during a 72 hour scenario. Understanding how to maintain your body core temperature buy staying hydrated, building a quick emergency style shelter and creating fire quickly off the landscape are central to the course. We will cover next fire mentality and how to plan and secure your next fire once the first one is established. We will discuss in detail how to maximize the use of the 10c's and also emergency first aid /self aid measures. Navigation with a compass is also a big part of the training. Each class is tailored to the season as some practices are better suited to certain seasons. I hope this gives you at least an idea of the class content. Personally I enjoy colder weather for many reasons. I guess it comes down to personal preference on the season but I enjoy fire making in the colder weather when you can actually stand to be around the fire. Also the lack of ticks and poison ivy are huge for me.

I took the basic class this fall im so happy that I did heat plays a big roll on the body and mind so I say cooler weather for sure

Whos Datguy Tobacco products would be allowed in the basic class. Also, you are allowed to eat at any time during the class but being busy will make quick foods the best choice during the day. Foods like trail mix and protein bars will serve you well when you don’t have time to cook. At the end of the day once class is done, you can cook something on the fire for sure. We want you to stay hydrated and fueled during basic class so you can perform well. You will receive a certificate for completion of the course and the patch is given to all who pass with 80 percent or better on the deliverables.

They may still complete the class and receive a certificate of completion even if they don't reach this standard but to "Patch Out" aka pass, they have to succeed on 80% of their assignments.

I have seen people complete the class that had limitations. I have seen others tap out as well. It is hard to say Ben. I admire your strong spirit and that mindset alone can make the difference. I will be honest with you though and say it will be very challenging, especially considering your situation. I would say read the course description closely on Self Reliance Outfitters site and see if you think it sounds doable. I will tell you that as long as you are giving your best, we will do everything we can to help you get through the course. The “Intro to Survival” and “Bushcraft 101” classes are low-intensity. There is some walking at a slow pace. Buy the video... 4 Days. Dave sells it on the Self Reliance Outfitter website pathfinder school. It's a 2 hour video of the whole 4 days basic class... down to dehydration and students with heat stroke... hiking in 100 degree heat. Going through deep water waist high Carrying a backpack PLUS a 55 gallon trash bag full of brush for assignments... all of this hikingfor miles and miles. Pretty positive ie 99% to 100% this course cant be done with a cane.... just not realistic. Honest truth. Young guys getting carried out on a stretcher made of 2 branches and 2 trash bags. Think youll be able to carry someone out? They will switch carriers....

..Dave doesn't like criticism, he'll either ignore you or delete you.. He deleted me for using Daniel Boone as a point of reference... Boone trapped for months at a time and once he was gone for a year and a half. None of these wannabes could handle that..

We have created a bushcraft 101 class and an intro to survival class which are for people who want exactly what you described, a chance to learn skills in a camp environment with no stress. Those classes fit many people and will give the opportunity for people to learn skills who are not physically able to withstand the rigors of the standard PF survival classes. I think many people confuse the intention of the Pathfinder basic class . It is meant to simulate a 72 hour survival scenario and give people the chance to experience some stress while practicing and performing the base skills needed in such a scenario. It is marketed that way and not expressly meant for beginners. We do have beginners come and pass this class often but it can be challenging for those with little to no experience. As instructors, we do our best to help everyone who comes to our classes to gain the knowledge and skills being taught regardless of experience. However, the course description is clear that this course is not intended to be a laid back skills class but rather an opportunity for those interested to push themselves and to be in a simulated scenario. The students who come to the school and complete the training are empowered through it and always leave the school more confident, more prepared and with a sharpened skill set. I totally understand that this type of training does not fit everyone and is not appropriate for everyone but is rather a niche that the Pathfinder School fills. We have expanded the types of classes being offered in an attempt to be more inclusive and to hopefully share the system with more people. I am an instructor for the PF School but my YT channel is completely independent from the school and rather my own venture. With that said, I know Dave is a very busy guy and receives a large volume of comments. Sometimes he replies as he has time and sometimes not depending. I am not sure who you are referring to as wannabes, so I won't assume. I imagine it would be hard for anyone to compare to the likes of Daniel Boone. It's a different world in many respects as compared to his day. I know for myself that unless something drastic happens I will never have the opportunity to test myself being afield for months, much less a year. I simply do what I can with the time I have and train hard to learn and practice every skill I can. It's a never ending process for me. I try to sharpen my skills and learn something new every day. The longer I pursue this goal, the more I realize I have to learn yet.

I didn't know you were one of Dave's students, but I learned from his FB site that he will delete you if you don't agree w/ him 100%...I didn't say anything nasty other then wannabes. They want to be mountain men, but they're not.. They're just going thru the motions, like 90% of the fake Christians these days.. I guess I hit a nerve ! . ... I went to a Pathfinder Spring gathering in Ohio and I sat 5 feet from Dave in the pavilion, he stayed w/ his own group and didn't talk to anyone else, he ignored me when I made an attempt to say hi.. It was all business to him, he didn't want to make friends, he's all talk, very little show.. . Dave's all about money, money, money !

I have spent countless hours with Dave as a students and as an instructor and friend and I can't tell you how many times I have seen him go out of his way to help students while going above and beyond the call of duty. I have seen him give thousands of dollars worth of gear to people piece by piece, I have seen him give classes to people who could never afford them simply because he believed the person deserved to come to the school to train. He did this not expecting to receive publicity or anything else in return. Back in June we were eating dinner in Atlanta after Blade Show (Dave, Iris, Shawn Kelly and myself) when a random guy came up and said, "I am sorry to bother you Dave but I am a big fan and had to come and say hello." Dave put down his food stood up and shook that strangers hand and took pictures with the guy right there at the table and thanked him for his support. He did this and after the guy walked away commented how grateful he was for people like that. He commented that if you ever get to big to shake hands with the people who support you then you have lost your way. That is just one small example of countless times I have seen Dave treat people that way. Dave does make a living from what he does however, it is his career and he works extremely hard and at the same time still finds time to share so much with people for free as well. I guess Being a friend, I have seen a side of him that maybe everyone else doesn't. Again, I am sorry you had a bad experience but Dave has a good heart and does a great many good deeds that go unnoticed by the majority of people. Just to mention the FB Learning center, there are multiple admins there. Very rarely have I seen Dave delete people. Usually some of the other admins take care of that stuff. There are several of us that watch the page closely and make sure the rules are adhered to to keep a positive learning environment. I don't recall seeing the post that you referred to so I am not sure why you were deleted. I have seen people challenge Dave pretty hard on there and he simply responded and let it go. Admins deleting people is usually for either a severe offense or a second offense after warning. Again, I am not sure of your particular case. I am not typing all of this to challenge you or argue in any way but rather just to share my experience over time and what I have witnessed.

I believe the youngest that can qualify for a patch is age 13. I believe 10 to 12 can accompany an adult (free of charge) during the class just as a shadow. There is of course no age cap for adults. I would love to see you come on out brother!

When I did the course in spring 2017, I (and I think everyone else) slept in my own tent the first night and then under the survival/tarp/blanket the second night.

Stacy is correct in that as of 2018 we did allow students to use any gear they chose for night one. Night two they had to use the methods taught to shelter and keep themselves as comfortable as possible. That could change in 2019 but as of yet I haven't heard of any changes planned.
