To all you guys out there wanting to keep a Barn Owl. This should be the very FIRST video you watch. After meeting my Barnie, so many people have said they want one. Firstly, I show them my freezer drawers, 200 plus frozen chicks and mice, then move over to Owly's defrosted dinner ... a day old chick ... I'll 'pop' out an egg sack, pull off a couple of juicy legs and by this time they've pretty much gone off the idea. Feeding does get better as they get older!

I dont know if its an adult but it looks just like your owl but it isnt that active stands and just looks in one direction and maybe just sleeps

The first thing I would do is try to locate a vet that specializes in raptors or try and locate a raptor sanctuary that knows all the in's and out's of the special needs of raptors (owls).In none of this is available to you, then watch ALL of these videos on owls and their care. It sounds like you have a young adult that has been traumatized; maybe hit by a car. I don't know where you are going to find all that you need for their specialized diet, so you may have to work extra hard at it. Also, if you have Animal Control, you might want to talk with them. They may have connections to a raptor sanctuary that could help you, or you could surrender the bird to them for care. Good luck!

Wow thank you so much for letting me know that because I was considering deleting them because I saw that they didn't get many views so I thought they weren't really helping anyone. I know it's been a while since you uploaded and this is the first time I even ever see one of your videos. but I would need your help if you can. I just found a starving baby owl and I'm trying to find ways to help it. tomorrow I'm going to call a wildlife preservation Center to see what they suggest I would like your input as well.

Hi. Thanks for your video. I have a 4 weeks old burrowing owl , that I am feeding one day old chicks. A couple of days ago I started to feed him the chicks without removing the hair/bones: First I remove the yolk, the head and the legs. Then I cut the rest into small pieces. My owl has made pellets twice, so I gather it is ok, that I feed him like this? Do you agree? In your video you say, that mice/rats are better food in the first 2-3 months. Is this also the case with the burrowing owls?

I know this is an old vid, but we just got 2 eggs from our neighbour who cut down a tree with a nest in it, we´ve put the eggs into the incubator, now if they hatch, is it possible to give them raw chicken? Would a full grown owl get sick if you already removed bones and fur/feathers? Would they not have to make pellets if this process is done? (I don't own an owl, just curious lol)

A full grown owl wouldn't get sick but there would be no need to remove the bones and hair anymore so why bother if it makes pellets. After 21 days we always incorporate more bone and hair into the diet slowly...

Is English your native language? And I found an egg under a tree. I couldn’t find a nest so I brought it home. I didn’t know if it was alive so I kept it warm for a couple days and saw development in the egg. I did that by putting the flashlight from my phone on and then laid the egg on it. I thought is was a pigeon egg, but know it’s developing differently. So it might be a long-eared owl egg. If it is an owl I want to know how to take care off it. So what do I feed a new born long-eared owl and how many times and how much? And do they need like an incubator or something like that. Just how do I keep it alive if it is an long-eared owl? Sorry for the long story.

For a baby owl: you need to feel the tummy while feeding and stop when it gets tight. For an adult barn owl: 2 to 3 chicks a day and I feed mine in the evening.

Depends on the age: up to 2 weeks old = up to 6 times a day, up to 4 weeks old = up to 4 times a day and from then, 3 or 2 times a day...

Where did you find it? What species is it? Bring it to a bird rescue center. If you don't know anything about owls, it's extremely hard to keep them alive...

Does it have to be day old chicks? Could you use an adult frozen chicken? It has a lot more meat on it and is easier to dissect than a baby. You would need to defrost a leg and thigh or a breast, filet it and pound it with a mallet to help break down the muscle fibers and chop it up. It seems more efficient and I have watched an adult owl shred a pigeon to feed its owlets. Just curious, where I live it is a Felony to possess a Bird of Prey in any way, shape or form. Dead or alive. Unless you have the training, all the Federal permits and a good lawyer. Though I long for an owl or a peregrine falcon....

very tiny pieces of boneless and hairless raw meat of mice, baby mice, baby rats and one day old chicks. Cut the flesh off around the bones because owls can't make pellets yet the 21st days of their lives an can die if you give them bones and hair to eat. So only the raw meat of mice, baby rats, young mice and one day old chicks. With meat I also mean the organs of the mice and one day old chicks.

But seriously, if you don't even know how to feed an owlet, then you're really irresponsible taking one as a pet...

Because it will probably die. You need to know A LOT to be able to raise a baby owl safely. There's more to it then just feeding them. You can overfeed them etc... You need to know a certain technique to know when to stop the feeding session because baby owls don't stop eating when they're full, they will eat until they're stomach bursts. NO! Your owl will die if you do this. Your barn owl can only eat one day old chicks and mice.
