The Supreme Court has decided in favor of a small Oregon town that placed civil punishments on homeless people for sleeping in public spaces, finding 6-3 the punishments don't violate the Eighth Amendment. Former federal prosecutor Scott Fredericksen joined CBS News to discuss the ruling.

There are those in power who don't want to eliminate homelessness and in fact like homelessness because they think it serves as a powerful specter and motivator to keep the masses well-behaved, on the hamster wheel, and in line with "the Program" -- which also happens to make them wealthy.

We cannot enable sleeping in the streets, its not safe, sanitary or ok in any way. We need to open many more tiny home communities with support, group homes, psychiatric hospitals for chronically ill, and other support that does not include enabling, or allowing individuals to live in this dangerous way. We need much more transparency in spending for funds allocated to homelessness. There are approximately 40K homeless in LA county and over 500 million dollars was spent in 2022, this does not add up. Mayor Bass is disappointed in the ruling, well I am disappointed in how her city enables the chronically ill mentally/addicted individuals and are NOT helping them by allowing them to live in filth and disrupt society as a whole. I was an ER nurse navigator and we are not getting it done. The unhoused often do not want to go back to shelters and prefer petty theft to get drugs or whatever and lay in the street. Those who sit at home outraged about a ruling that most likely wont make any difference anyway and most likely will not be enforced should get off the couch and volunteer at a shelter. Hear those "guests" demanding coffee and donuts. Our ERs are packed with these individuals who show up at triage or by ambulance every day while not filling their free prescriptions or following up with providers to treat the conditions, driving the cost of healthcare skyrocketing out to control. Hospitals created "co-insurance" I believe to cover these individuals because they are losing so much money. I applaud the ruling and I am democrat, but believe strongly in self responsibility but much more needs to be done and to show how money is being spent and what works and what does not, what.

Now that there is a way of forcing homeless addicts off the streets, communities can now get busy providing drug treatment and temporary housing options for them. This was impossible before because homeless had a right to camp in public and most of them simply REFUSED to participate in their own rehabilitation.

SCOTUS judges - God must be proud of you ! The 6 Catholic judges sure abides by the Catholic Church's teachings on homelessness and the poor. The teaching states that everyone has a right to dignity, community, and care, and that Christians should love and care for the poor because God is the poor and the poor are God. The Church also believes that caring for those who are less well off is everyone's responsibility, and that vulnerable and marginalized people should receive special attention. The 2 Protestants judges Psalm 15:5 God blesses the righteous person who assists the destitute. The 1 Jewish judge Hebrews 13:16 - The Good News: Do good and share with others. Many cities have full city exclusions with time constraints for defecating, drinking or loitering without reason. this is a simple city charter or legislative addition and would give the teeth needed to make decisions to help people get off the street, out of predatory areas and away from predators feeding on their savings or other resources. This would enable programs to help get people off substances that may have contributed to their situation.

Just a thought maybe you could build tiny homes in a field, like the company “pallets” may even donate them, sounds like more county and state resources are needed or the funds are being misused. Also people who need money and have rooms to rent could be subsidized, please look outside the box for funding and resources and what other small towns are doing with limited resources. @@nobolt7 I’m only doing my duty as you or anyone would, if they had the means, help a person in desperate need. Just IMAGINE what is happening to the homeless in developing countries or restricted nations. My wife is Brazilian and there is a lot of poverty in her country, she has dual citizenship. My wife and I are low income, I’m disabled and filed for social security disability in 2019 and my case is in circuit court, then we were in an auto accident and I have 3 herniated discs in neck and a brain injury and severe spinal stenosis and serious pre-existing health conditions, we are barely surviving yet because of the love of God working in us we can’t stop loving people. Again, I could write a book about it and in addition to the work we did, which you have no evidence it is not true, we worked with Union Gospel Missions and the Rescue Missions in Jacksonville. We have looked into all types of ideas. I’m a degreed engineer with many contacts from Fortune 500 companies, my alumni from 3 universities and as a first responder… We can only serve with the capacity of strength, love and grace that we have and we live for the glory of God. The ONLY reason I replied like I did is because you questioned my commitment to help the homeless with action. In Florida DeSantis recently passed a law, HB 1365, requiring all cities to provide homeless shelters and the state is funding mental health and substance abuse programs, etc. I also studied law and enforce both Federal and State laws, more importantly helping companies come into compliance with the laws and even if they are fined for breaking the law to control the loss and build resilience into the organization. I began to work the chain of command after working with our city’s mayor, who is also our CPA, then sent a letter to our senator and the governor asking for help, etc. I rarely comment on KZfaq because the emotional part of my brain is severely damaged and I only get discouraged and upset and sometimes it takes me days of weeks to get over bullying or something like it... I just love people so much! My wife says I love people too much. I love writing so maybe I should right an article or paper on: “Can You Love Too Much?” Because sometimes the only thing we have to give is love. Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. I’ve gone through a lot in life and it has had its toll on me, but my life is Christ, yes many have forsook me when I was desperate for help, I hold nothing against them, but after all my service as a public servant I need help and few helped. I’ve made a lot of mistakes too but I aim to always love people. I can empathize with the homeless, poor and disabled. I worked very hard in my career and was working as a national EHS director for Hoerbiger and had to retire because of my disabilities. Have you sat down with the homeless for hours upon hours, or even minutes, listening to their stories, shaking their hand, hugging them or encouraging them? I know for a fact that this will have more impact on them than a shelter. I believe the soul is eternal and you can gain the whole world but lose your soul. I only decided to comment because when I heard the decision from the Supreme Court a part of my heart was taken from me and it cut me deep. We have given an open invitation to the mayor to help through any means possible, when he is ready, but in the meantime since the homeless do not have a shelter we love them outside the shelter. Many in the local community have tried some of your ideas, or similar, I know a guy who has land set aside to build a shelter, like you suggested and many in the community have tried to do everything to help but instead they arrest the homeless for trespassing, panhandling and they tear down their only home, tents, etc. And many of them are Vets or widows. Yes there are widows both men and women over 60’s on the streets: this all inhumane and cruel and unusual punishment; oftentimes people treat their pets better than people. Anyways, I hate commenting on KZfaq but I could not hold back in this particular scenario. Please take a few minutes to sit down and listen to the homeless and show you ‘truly’ care for them because you might be the one who encourages them to get the help they need or whatever to get them out of their desperate situation… Lastly, I oftentimes ask them if they have any friends and most say no for various reasons and I say will I’m your friend.

More regional decision making is good. Too much central power has accumulated over the last century.

"Happily-housed, Happily-housed in their homes, where empty trailers and cabins are displayed, where often is heard a disparaging word, and the coffers go ca-ching ca-ching all day..." .

the gentrification of neighborhoods by greedy corporations and house flippers has caused this issue. give back the houses, give back the land, take a tax incentive for doing so and the People win and those who created these vast stretches of new empty housing can let people rent or buy with zero down and affordable payments and the big payment at the end of the loan not the beginning. Get rid of the credit bureaus and make institutions have their own credit departments. Do not use credit for insurance, use driving records. maybe use logic instead of profit for the reasons to be a help to mankind instead of a detriment like so many fat cats have become. fuel prices coming down so now everything else will drop, greedy wall street has caused all of this

People from all walks of life become homeless. Yes, well to do people end up homeless too. Let them find out how providing no shelters, making access to the public assistance difficult, etc. Just keep being cruel and see how the crime rises. Criminalizing these people's will not help them get help. It will remove them from society and they will rot in prison for being homeless. This is cruelty. This is inhumane. This is not at all the Christian way. My God is not happy with the greed in this country. Im certain of that.

Have you volunteered at a shelter?

@@nobolt7in the city I live we don’t have a shelter. I could almost write a book on how much time my wife and I spent volunteering to help the city build a shelter. Worked with mayor, etc. Our heart is broken to the core because we know the homeless by name and they are our friends. I wish we had the money and the land and we would take EVERY homeless person, with no prerequisites, and provide them with a shelter. Again, I could write a book on this… but I tell you the truth: I have only one hero and that’s Jesus. If I were to have another hero it would be the homeless. I’m also an emergency medical technician, first responder and public health and safety servant for over 30 years. The city wouldn’t work with us or anyone in the past who wanted to help them build a shelter, so we do the only thing we can do: LOVE.

scripture sounds like this situation in Job 24:4 They push the needy off the road and force all the poor of the land into hiding.' leviticus 25:35Now if your countryman becomes destitute and cannot support himself among you, then you are to help him as you would a foreigner or stranger, so that he can continue to live among you. 36Do not take any interest or profit from him, but fear your God, that your countryman may live among you.…

I blame the homeless. Sleep somewhere and wake up early in the morning, pack up your stuff! People don't like trash and waste everywhere including myself. Unfortunately a lot of homeless are lazy and rebellious and you get too comfortable being homeless! I am a homeless woman for 6 months getting my way out of homelessness god forbid I get too I am a homeless woman with my son, for 6 months, getting my way out of homelessness! God forbid I get too comfortable in this mess😑
