The Carian wars reminded me a lot of the Dornish wars from ASOIAF, the targaryens tried several times to claim dorne via conquest and failed. The only way Dorne ever became part of the 7 kingdoms was through a marriage pact between a Targaryen prince and a Dornish princess. Similar to Radagon marrying Rennala after two wars fought to a standstill, finally bringing the Carians into the Golden Order.

the Mad Taint as a concept is something that it feels like we often overlook in the lore. Like we assume that all the actions taken by the demigods were completely rational, or at least have some logical course of reason to them, but we know that, when the shattering happened and they got the shards of the Elden Ring, it drove them mad. Rennala is the easiest one to point at, she was devastated by the divorce, but when the amber egg was given to her, it turned to obsession. She will never rise up against the erdtree again, because the mad taint of the rune of the unborn drove her to obsession
@DisgruntledPeasant
@DisgruntledPeasant 20 күн бұрын
Agreed, also the fact that the eldenring shards essentially super powered these characters. You see a lot of discussion for example about who would have won between radahn and various characters BEFORE he went mad, but he would have been a significantly more mundane being back then. Kinda interesting too that Marika is revered as a literal goddess by many, when she explicitly was mortal before she became what she is now.
@nightscout9979
@nightscout9979 19 күн бұрын
It might be a mix of general greed on the demi-gods' parts and, in the final game, a lack of information by the narrator. At the Outer Wall Battleground Site of Grace, Melina quotes Marika telling the demi-gods to become a lord or god, but that if they don't become either, they'll be sacrifices to cut down. If the demi-gods had that as a sort of order given by Marika, they might have warred for self-preservation. Also, Morgott presumably wouldn't be told this, as he was abandoned as an infant and imprisoned in the sewers.

Said it elsewhere, will say it again. I wouldn't want to read Martin Ring. I don't like Martin's writing style with its constant cussing, its confusing change of POV, its refusal to explain key terms and so on. Looking at the game, I guessed that Martin had minimal involvement in the writing and served as a gimmick seeing that Miyazaki's themes of a fallen world that has to be either maintained, destroyed or fashioned anew prevailing. This video confirms it. And what he wrote was most likely not prose but a Cliff Notes or description of what the characters and world are.

Yeah they already said the DLC includes a portion of Martin's mythos that was not told in the base game. They felt it wouldn't fit and thought it best to release separately as DLC. From likely came up with this idea of Miquella retracing and discovering what Marika did early in Martin's mythos. Alongside frame the history of new characters the same way they did with the base games cast. Akin to legends told of events that transpired long ago, that shaped the world of today

Miyazaki uses pre-existing fiction as his muse. He said when he was a child his english was poor so when he read fantasy in english he only understood parts of it and he was left with a lot of mystery that fueled his imagination. Somehow he can transform that into compelling game worlds. In Elden Ring he went a step further and commissioned a personalized fantasy lore that he could break down into a world and it resulted in his most acclaimed project yet so whatever he does it works.

@@zoid_on_youtube Those are some fantastic points as far as the storytelling goes. It’s after that information starts pooling together is when I /really/ got almost obsessed. The world is so rich and intricate, clearly inspired by a lot but equal to none imo. Everything from ogrish omen, and elf like alabaster and onyx lords to the Elden Ring itself are so incredibly interesting that I keep coming back to the game to explore and have listened to dozens of hours of speculation. The way Miyazaki presents the information is like a really really nice cherry on top. It keeps me awake at night knowing that the world of Elden Ring can only be experienced through a videogame, when The Lands Between deserve so much more attention.

If Martin says he wrote a “fairly detailed world” akin to Middle Earth then ya best believe it was massive. Also people might interpret Miyazaki saying that Martin didnt write the in-game text of the game to mean the lore in the item descriptions is all Miyazaki. I dont believe this is what he meant. All of the item descriptions talking about the distant past (particularly those that use the language “it is said”) was likely pulled directly from Martin’s mythos. We know that Martin is one of Miyazaki’s favorite authors since ASIOF is listed as one of his biggest influences found on his “book shelf of inspirations”. You dont ask a famous author and personal idol to write the world of your game and then not use their language when creating the text for that game.
@PowerfulSkeleton
@PowerfulSkeleton 20 күн бұрын
Given that the text was also being translated into Japanese, then back to English for localisation, there'd have been a non-zero amount of interpretation and rewording of any GRRM text used in the game itself, even if there were attempts to use direct quotes.
@sclafantasy
@sclafantasy 20 күн бұрын
@@PowerfulSkeleton Very true but Miyazaki’s English is better than we think imo. As a young boy he grew up reading English literature (that he didn’t fully understand at the time granted) but knowing that and his interviews that speak of doing all of the in-game text including even translations for DeS and DS1 lead me to believe he was likely reading Martins original English. Of course this is speculative but there are a lot of signs that point to his ability to read/write english.
@zoid_on_youtube
@zoid_on_youtube 20 күн бұрын
Some of the dialogue and phrasing of the text in Elden Ring is noticeably more Martin-esque than anything before in Souls. Even if Martin didnt specifically write it, it may be the case that the writers were intentionally leaning into his style and incorporating it into their own. Rennala using the word "sweetings" referring to children, something that Martin uses a lot in ASOIAF and I personally havent encountered the term anywhere else. Or Nepheli using the phrase "I am a woman grown", a phrase also used very often in ASOIAF.

What in-game text or character states that Radahn fought Morgott 1v1 and lost?
@chocobo4646
@chocobo4646 2 күн бұрын
@@TheStraightestWhitest It's the opening cutscene slideshow. Morgott's image looks to be on top of someone who undeniably looks like Radahn, presumably winning a fight and successfully defending Leyendel. Who knows when or where that image took place, or how stylized it's supposed to be, but it does make it look like Morgott defeated Radahn at some point in time.
@TheStraightestWhitest
@TheStraightestWhitest 2 күн бұрын
@@chocobo4646 Yeah, that's why I asked for text or a statement, not a figurative illustration that's very clearly very wrong, because the game itself contradicts that event. See, Radahn began learning gravity magic specifically to ride his horse Leonard, because he grew to be absolutely gigantic as a young adult. But he only assaulted Leyndell well into his adulthood, when he was thousands if not millions of years old (hard to say how long the royal family has lived by the time of The Shattering). So that doesn't add up. That illustration showcases Radahn as half Morgott's size. In-game he's four times Morgott's size. But if he was half Morgott's size, he would've been able to ride Leonard without gravity magic, easily. So that just does not work, no matter how you put it. It would mean Radahn attacked Morgott as a teenager prior to even growing to a size where he could no longer ride his horse. And that just makes zero sense, because the illustration was about The Shattering, meaning well after Radahn grew giant. This is why people going off that illustration are, no offense intended, idiotic. The entirety of the game itself heavily contradicts the two ever clashing. It would've been mentioned. Malenia VS Radahn, Malenia VS Godrick, even Godrick hiding from Radahn, all of this was mentioned. Every clash or near-clash between demigods was mentioned. Rykard's and Radahn's assaults on the capitol, both mentioned. But never Morgott fighting Radahn. So that means the intro portrait, which showcases The Shattering (meaning Radahn should be four times Morgott's size) is just one of two things: 1. It's a purely stylized idea that never actually took place literally 2. Radahn and Morgott did clash, but Radahn recognized the son of his idol and just retreated instead of killing him, and his size was just toned down massively to fit the frame. The latter of the two makes little sense since the same opening portraits showcase him as ten times the size of Malenia, who's like half a meter shorter than Morgott (Malenia 2.73, Morgott 3.20). So considering we get zero dialogue, zero item descriptions, and zero dev statements about Radahn ever fighting Morgott, and all we ever see is an extremely contradictory illustration that showcases Radahn, who's a giant compared to Morgott, as half Morgott's size, I'm going with the fact that they never fought. It just doesn't make sense, especially since multiple characters and item descriptions, the latter of which objective and unbiased, state Radahn to be the strongest demigod of them all. If the two did fight, Morgott would not survive it.

One thing I noticed and liked in elden ring is that we got a sense of the demigods being a family and that some of the actions of the demigods were possibly personal. Ranni may have initiated the night of the black knifes due to Radagon leaving Rennala - revenge against Marika. There seems to be a rivalry of sorts between Miquella / Melania and the step-demigods (even if the carians weren't united like miquella and melania were). The marriage pacts seem like it might have been a part of the mythos GRRM created. We even get some insight on the characters: IE, radagon seemed to have decent relations with Rahdan / Rykard (until the blasphemy) and Miquella but not so much Malennia and Ranni. Radagon at one point seemed to have been close to his children (while Marika was always distant except possibly with Godwyn). Rykard and Ranni were allied and Rykard and Rahdan seemed to have been on good terms at least until the shattering. The shattering itself is a succession crisis with the addition of the great runes.

The interpersonal relationships between the roster of bosses in ER def has GRRM's fingerprints all over, especially all the scheming and backstabbing and rivalries they had against each other. Past games didn't really detail let alone talk about any of the big major bosses relationships to each other. Like what did Gwyn think of Into? The Witch? His daughter Gwynevere? Or the Witch and Nito's opinions on each other? The Lord's of Cinder were completely separate from each other, etc. The interconnection that most of the major bosses have with each other is one of my favorite part of ER's lore compared to the other games

For ex: The idea that The Night Of Black Knives happened BEFORE Radagon left Rennala and that she isn't broken from the fact he left her, but rather, because Ranni killed herself and the Sweetings we see when we fight her come from her obsession with bringing Ranni back. However, she can't do it properly because she isn't a Demigod.

What's weird about it? People do that in real life. My maternal grandfather's name was Vernee, maternal grandmother was Vera and my mom was derived from that and starts with a V. My own daughter's name starts with a V. and if I'd had a son then it would have been a male name that started with it. That's like normal fantasy writing. Lots of fantasy writers talk about it. If you've created a mythos or world, adding stuff later comes with possibly lazy or no foreshadowing, which readers catch up on and dislike. So it would make sense that they are pulling from the original foundation cause its just bad writing to add whole new concepts in after an established world. With shadow of the erdtree the foreshadowing came in the form of the mysteries surrounding miquellas objective and marikas origin, at least those are some of them, this makes the reveal of that world more seamless cause if we weren't already wondering about those mysteries then the expansion would feel forced. Basically it would be more surprising if this wasn't the case and it's totally new lore

It’s a VERY unique and fascinating way to do collaboration. I’m pretty sure this is the first video game in history (correct me if wrong) to enlist a well respected author AND a well respected Videogame developer, to do a story in a way where the AUTHOR creates the lore and world building, and the DEVELOPER interprets such lore and turns it into a story. It’s also a perfect way to collaborate for Fromsoft-style games. Games where the glory of the past is obsolete, and you live in the post-apocalyptic remains of such a past. Having an incredible and experienced world-builder (like Martin) build the bones of the world and history, and an experienced post-apocalyptic narrative developer (Miyazaki and From) being able to create such a rich experience of allowing players to have multiple “OH, DAMN, that War sounds so cool, I’d love to have a full game focused around that War!” type of moments that fromsoft do good at making the players want more from their worlds after completing the games. Miyazaki already talked to this a little bit, but I can only imagine how much inspiration Miyazaki gained from a collaborative effort like this. I get the feeling that Miyazaki may or may not have entered writer’s block when at the beginning of developing Elden Ring. Then, when Martin developed the bones of the world, I just KNOW that Miyazaki had the greatest surge of inspiration and motivation to come up with many of the incredible themes, motifs, visual aesthetics and style of the game, and the general direction of the game, after Martin showed the Team what he’d developed

Something I noticed with the Elden Ring lore is that there is a relatively unexplored history of dragons and the time before the erdtree. We see some of this in the game with the dragon bosses and what remains of Farum Azula, but it almost feels like it was intended to be explorable in more detail or even be more present in the environment. Maybe Shadow Of The Erdtree will hold the answers?

There is absolutely NOTHING in the game to suggest that the shards of the elden ring turned the demigods into grotesque monsters. Maliketh literally had the WHOLE rune of death and he didnt change into a misshapen beast...not that he wasnt already a wolf but you know what i mean. Plus Bloodborne already did the whole eyes on the inside and the more insight you have the more you notice things turning you insane, if that was part of elden rings lore as well then the more shards you get by killing the bosses the more crazy the player character would look. There is just nothin there my guy. The demigods were already fucked up before the runes were captured by them from the shattering and probably allowed them to become more fucked up by choice (grafting/getting eaten by a sake)

GGRM wrote the foundation of the game we know today. The lore is so much more crazy deep then other FROM games, and that's because of GRRM. Then FROM/Miyazaki took what GRRM gave them and added their "spices" to the mix (**cough, Berserk, cough**). GRRM always gave FROM their credit to the game, he's always said "I didn't do the game" but he certainly deserves credit for the lore. Even if it's a lot like some of the same stuff he's already written. I mean look at all of the lore videos on KZfaq. It's not just Vaati and Smoughtown. That's GRRM influence on the Elden Ring. I'm not a GRRM fan, but I am an Elden Ring fan. I am just as encompassed with the lore as the game itself. GRRM deserves a lot of credit. Give dude his flowers.

The way I've always thought of it was he wrote all of the background lore involving the characters before the shattering. Like it didn't even look like what we see as elden ring at all. Merely just for a playground for miyazaki to "fuck up" and make his own thing. I wouldn't be surprised if Martin's background work looked lore like lord ofnthe rings more than anything. So obviously we never directly see or interact with his contributions to the game.

This aligns with the design philosophy Miyazaki explained when interviewed on Dark Souls: "As I mentioned earlier, each artist began with just a few simple "image words" and developed their designs from that. The words which inspired each of their designs and the way they chose to use them was very different. Some found that relatively philosophical words gave them ideas while some used them to develop a character's back story. Each collaboration was different and because of that, each was stimulating in its own way. " 'There was need for some direction, so in Dark Souls there were three main sections or themes: the image of Gods and knights centered around Anor Londo Lost Izalith and the theme of Chaos, fire and demons and Gravelord Nito and the image of death and decay I suppose you could also add to that the image of the ancient dragons. These themes, along with utilising the artists' personal styles, formed the basis of the Dark Souls design principle. In contrast to most art teams, we didn't have our artists concentrating on a specific section, instead all the artists contributed to all areas." The interview is available on the dark souls 1 Fextralife wiki.

I'm confused as to why there's some people that still isn't familiar with George's contributions (assuming they've been catching up with ER news), but it's true that some may not see how his writing is palpable throughout the game. So here's a few GRRM esque writing influences, taking A Song of Ice And Fire as a reference: -Political intrigue and the palpable consequences of war. -Morally gray characters with different points of views. -Family dynamics playing a huge role in the development of the story. -Magic being above the reader and some characters' understanding of the world. -Small elements of cosmic horror. -Bittersweet conclusions to many characters.
