The zero g plane, also known as a parabolic flight, or the vomit comet, flies in parabolic trajectories to give a brief experience of weightlessness. This flight, operated by Novespace in Bordeaux, France, offered 14 weightless parabolas, 2 parabolas with a simulation of moon gravity, and one with Mars gravity. I brought some demos to try out on the vomit comet, with little to no success. But who can ever prepare for these weightless things? Watch to find out whether I threw up!

I enjoyed the honesty in this. Sometimes we spend a lot of time figuring out an experiment that doesn't work like we imagine. I totally relate to that feeling of failure on your face. I love that you explained that process and owned it.

@drops2cents260
@drops2cents260 3 жыл бұрын
@@brotheralaric7177 Um... very interesting and quite entertaining, I suppose? Although 22 seconds of zero-g might be a bit too short for e.g. performing Swan Lake in one take, so it might be prudent to consider stuffing some ballet artists in a rocket and shooting them up to the ISS instead. On the other hand, OK Go managed to put together a 3:21 music video which was filmed during one single zero-g flight ("Upside Down & Inside Out", kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gr13faRqzpecc6M.html ), so with a bit of creative video editing that still might be possible. :-)

Diana is going to have some great stories to tell her grandchildren. Or videos, either way. But honestly, while I do envy her some of her experiences, unless you've been extremely timid we've all done amazing things, seen amazing things, or been present when amazing things happened. They might have been different things, but they're ours, and through the rosy lens of nostalgia, they can only get better. Plus, I kind of like her giggling. It's cute.

In the early 1980s, I was the Stage Development Engineer for the Peacekeeper (MX) ICBM Stage IV. At one point, we switched propellant tanks on the stage from positive expulsion to surface tension tanks. One critical part of that was characterizing the dynamic effect of propellant slosh on the stage, which did a LOT of maneuvering. That's when I got to fly on the NASA KC-135 - the one where all of the astronauts trained, and where they filmed the zero-G scenes in "Apollo 13." Yeah, it was absolutely the most fun I've ever had in my life. It was a kick seeing you experience it, and having as much fun as I did! (As an aside, my best friend and roommate from college went to work at NASA/Glenn, doing variable G combustion research. He has the most hours of anyone on the KC-135 after Bob Williams, the guy who ran the operation.)

On earth the heart is pumping blood in your brain against the gravity. In space your heart pumps at the same rate but without the gravity your blood pressure in your brain will increase. So having high blood pressure on earth can have a negative effect and every astronaut (and for statistical reasons their close relatives) must have a normal blood pressure.

Such a cool video. I'm surprised your hair wasn't covering your face the whole time! So if I understand correctly, you are "weightless" on the climb because the plane sort of throws you up and then decelerates underneath you? I've experienced this sort of thing on roller coasters, but I'm surprised that the effect lasts for a full 11 seconds... I guess when you think about it though, the plane is traveling so fast that it "throws" you quite a distance!

No. The plane follows a straight line. It looks like an ellipse (not a parabola as stated in the video) because intuitively you use an accelerated reference frame. So it's following part of a normal orbital trajectory, just one that intersects the surface.

Jaqen I imagine they cancel out 9.8 m/s from the accelerometer, or even better, a reading from the aircraft on what to cancel out.

One thing that got me was how her hair reacted to the weightlessness because I have seen other videos of people with long hair in actual space and it just stands up straight as if it was gelled or something. Weird.

Gravity pulls hair down and bends it. Without gravity, hair straightens in the direction it exits the skin. I think the difference you see with astronauts on the ISS is that these also typically have only very rudimentary hair care and no styling that forces hair into a certain shape.

It is very interesting. So the lighter weight objects will react to 0-gravity in more visible and noticeable way than the heavy stuff!
