In this video I test many different woods to find out which ones make the best wood rings. It took so much longer than I thought it would but I am happy with what I found. There are many more species of wood than the ones that I tested but this is at least a good starting place. I hope you find this info helpful. By the way be sure to use all the safety precautions that come with the use of CA glue. Gloves, eye protection, and mask are recommended.
I knew I would make a mistake! The first ring shown in the "credits" is 'MAPPA Burl' not 'MAPLE Burl’

I'm just getting into working with this building method for rings, but I have worked on acoustic guitars quite a bit, so I'd hazard a guess that most woods that are suitable for lutherie would definitely be suitable for this kind of woodwork. Hardwoods like myrtle (from my home state!) have a tight, interlocking grain, but are still largely very workable. Maple, ash and several others aren't extremely taxing either. Anyone that wanted more tips on woods they could use may want to check on some guitar builders' sites.

I wish i had seen your tip about drying them on a light or monitor earlier, but it's too late at night now to bother. Hopefully the glue I bought works well. I have a few ideas for inlays but I'm just going to do a couple basic ones first.

Hi Happy Atom! Your bent veneer rings videos made me super interested in making one or two by myself :D I had some trouble with solid rings in use (they cracked) and I need to remake one for my boyfriend, so this way may be very helpful. I have a walnut veneer and I'm really happy that it's a perfect one to work with. I just hope such rings are less fragile than those made of solid wood... Good luck on your work and thanks for sharing your experience! Thumbs up ;-)

Love your videos. Just started doing bent wood rings. I’ve got about twelve under my belt thus far. I purchased a variety pack of exotic and domestic veneers from Sauers and love them. However, my pack did not include some purpleheart and padauk. I purchased both recently and am awaiting delivery. I was wondering if you attempted to turn either of those woods and, if so, what is your opinion on how easy or hard they are to turn?

I was able to use ebony. What I did was use a big pot to boil on the stove for 20 minutes and then I stepped it down to wrapping inside a big cup with the polling water in. I stepped down again into a smaller cup also with boiling water before going down to wrapping around a socket to dry. Total soak time was 2 hours. No cracking at all.

PRE-CUT & PRE-GLUED VENEER EDGE STRIPS FROM LOWES: (the ones that are sold by the coil). 1- I sanded the glue off. works just fine. 2- I left the glue on, stuck inside oven for a bit of time to let the glue bond. Works just fine, but CONSIDERABLY thicker.

Informative, just subscribed. Question about working with veneer cuts & grain. Have you noticed differences, with trying to bend a veneer strip cut cross-grain versus one cut along the fibers? Unless it was essential for aesthetics, i'd assume it wise to stay away from bending cross-grain, but i've not worked with the laminate construction you teach.

Here are a couple tips for you to try next time HappyAtom As a woodworker I worked many times with veneer and to prevent your craking and trouble with veneer warping, use some veneer stabiliser first on it to flatten it and then instead of soaking it in water try steaming it over boiling water. It works best and will do wonders compared to your method. Let me know when you try it

As I mentioned for the preceding video, try putting Downy fabric softener in the water to make the wood softer to bend. The softener won't effect gluing or appearance, and the stink will die down eventually.

How about soaking the wood in a warm, light mixture of glycerine, and water, (about 1 oz. Glycerine/1 pt. H2O...?), then, pressing the veneers between layers of blotting paper, and MDF, until they're relatively dry. I don't know if the glycerine might effect the ability to glue up the wood, but, it is recommended in some videos, on veneering. Also: What about slicing the veneers across the grain, and wrapping those strips, so as to utilize the flexibility of the woods across their grain?!...

I've been making wood rings for a couple of weeks now with pretty good consistency, but I was wondering about the possibility of recreating the pattern which is on The One Ring from LoTR. I looked it up to see if anyone had done anything similar on KZfaq but no one seems to have done so. Just curious in what guidance anyone could give in the aspect of engraving a very fine pattern onto the outer face of the ring and possibly using a gold paint inside of this engraving?

Well astonishingly gorgeous - each single one there and generous details . Now since I'm really addicted to wood but - here I migrated in Central America - the real beauties are hard as stones (ain't they always..) - any special tips when messing with hardwoods ? Some of them won't even accept sanding - or precious beauty ... gone an hard to get back.. Ain't got any experience with such small items - but my new woodworking playground and workroom - still under construction for another week - blame it on rain season - is equipped to the job - though with larger scale in mind.. so ... how should I proceed with hardwoods ? any luck with those difficult to impossible - to work with ( and specifically bend ) hardwoods ? many are a challenge if not a broken ego safe way to try bend ...

Does the super glue hold up well after being exposed to water? I made a ring the other day with deer antler and wood, I used a two part epoxy to bond them together but after washing my hands all day it separated on one side, do you think wood glue or super glue is the best option? Also it wasn’t veneer I cut the wood and antler, sanded them and epoxied them together them drilled the hole and sanded and blah blah blah but the epoxy didn’t hold.

I recently started making bentwood rings and my mom and i both fell in love with the purpleheart wood, both in veneer form and block form. However, I cannot get the purpleheart to bend to save my life, and when i try to do any kind of softening (I have literally tried everything) it either turned black from the heat or gray from the liquids pulling out the color. I dont mind doing it by block but i love the simplicity of the bentwood process. Do you have any recommendations for what to do as far as bending purpleheart? I have tried boiling, microwaving, steaming, cold water soaking, and veneer softener as well as dry heating (totaly burned it the first time).
