Everton are in serious threat of relegation. Right now is probably the worst time for Everton to be relegated. Following years of overspending and underperforming Everton could face time in the tier below the Premier League, with revenues small and debts high.
So what would life in the Championship be like for Everton?

I feel for the Everton fans, the club has been so poorly mismanaged, just lots of money thrown around with no real solution. I know it's not quite as drastic and extreme, but it feels a bit reminiscent to Portsmouth just over a decade ago. Portsmouth (Pompey) of course had other major problems, but it just goes to show how investment can both take a club to new heights, but also shrink it to new lows if not utilized with any sort or structure or plan.

Yep, as a Leeds fan no club is too big to go down, Leeds were a much bigger club then Everton when we went bankrupt and everything collapsed, I remember going to Champions League games with my dad and within a few years it was away games in league one. I absolutely despair at how our club has been mismanaged these past few years. Echoes of Sunderland and Portsmouth. For a club that once operated with a strict budget and wage system, and flourished with such, we’ve splashed the cash recklessly on names rather than players to fit a system. Relegation is bad for any club, but it will royally screw us, can see us doing a dramatic double-drop as there are far too many issues to untangle and set straight in one summer.

The fact Van der Beek turned down Newcastle to go to Everton as he "didn't want to be in a relegation battle" is certainly looking like a bad decision, as is moving to Everton when they'd literally just bought a player who occupies the same area (Delle Ali) and its fast becoming the worst short term transfer of the season.

Everton going down could well see them spiral into a freefall, despite a proud history the club is so poorly run at the moment that it is scary. I definitely disagree when people claim that Everton will just pop back up if we get relegated - this season we've lost to all three of the newly promoted sides, lost to QPR and only squeeked past a struggling Hull after extra time. We're simply rubbish when a team sits back even slightly. Plus, if we were to go down, we'd lose the only players with a smidge of a spark.

Everton going down wouldn't be great for them by any means, but it would give a lot of their youngsters a chance to feature for the 1st team at a regular, competitive level. The likes of Gordon, Branthwaite, Patterson, Onyago, Small, Welch, Dobbin etc, in alongside players in the cusp of becoming top class, like Godfrey, Gray etc. Shipping out the likes of Gomes, Keane & Alan (probably on loan to Galatasaray) and a big fee for Richarlison & DCL, plus keeping players like Doucoure and Mykolenko would help them financially and give them a platform to build from. When they bought some decent players a few years I seriously thought they would challenge for Europe consistently for a number of years. Lampard was the wrong choice , he likes playing out from the back amd Everton don’t have the players to do that. The decision making at the club is horrendous. Why sign dele alli, I was glad he left Spurs he is seriously a very lazy player not what you want in a dog fight at the bottom. If Burnley wasn’t playing so bad I would defo pick Everton to go down. For some clubs relegation can often be a hard reset and what they need to bounce back that bit stronger. With players on big wages off the books and younger players blooded into the first team. Back in 2016 I made some rather wild predictions on KZfaq regarding Everton. They were 1: That the team would face financial ruin before 2025. 2: The team would play in League One before 2030 3: That the new stadium would not be completed and would end up turning into a leisure, hotel and retail complex mid project. Now those three ideas were naturally all laughed at. Some might still, but I suspect now there are a few who would think all three of these things are plausible. It was the fourth that was the most radical and hard to imagine. That Everton, at some point in the next twenty years, will revisit the idea of leaving Liverpool altogether in search of a stadium in Knowlsey, or possibly even Rugby loving St Helens. Why? Simply because the number of school age kids in Liverpool that support Everton has been dropping for years and will only get worse. Goodison Park is an aging fanbase. Any Premier league ground hopper will tell you that the home crowd of an Everton game is starkly more heavily populated by 40/50 somethings than pretty much any other club. And when you visit the city you can see a change too. If you visit the airport, the souvenir shop is bedecked in Liverpool souvenirs with a corner at the back for Everton. Liverpool FC symbolism is everywhere in the city, while Everton is hard to find. Even the club's city centre shop is a small affair and often bereft of customers. while it's red counterpart is large, prominent and doing a roaring trade. You can tell in Liverpool city centre when it's a reds home match day. You can't on an Everton home day. Now I know some Everton fans will put that down to Liverpool's fans from outside the city staying in hotels while Evertonians are locals. But this was an argument Evertonians used to always make and to be quite frank it baffled me because they never seemed to pick up that a lack of a wider substantial national and international fan base was, and is the premier mark of a big club and Everton's lack of that was something being shouted about with pride. Everton's fan base is aging and dwindling. Relegation will only speed that process. The club will eventually see moving out of the city as a way to try and secure a firm fan base somewhere else, and Knowsley, so angrily decried by Evertonians fifteen years ago, will probably be the place.

Everton are making mistake after mistake.. Signing injury prone players like Gomes, Mina etc to form their core.. then signing managers who never fit their demands like Koeman. And then finally reached the worst possible point when they appointed Benitez their biggest mistake in the past 10 years. Why would you appoint a manager that nobody likes when the the team itself was struggling? Should've appointed Sean Dyche somehow. He handles austerity measure better than anyone else in the PL. Their fans really don't deserve this. They have a very loyal fan base although i personally don't like how they speak about other clubs. But they are a big club with a loyal fan base that deserves some kind of success. I honestly hope they don't get relegated.

A drop to League One sounds like the norm for relegated Premiership sides, anyway. Sheffield United, Southampton, and Leeds all did it during their exiles from the top flight. Sunderland is currently down there, and it'll be a long way back. At best case scenario, if Everton was to drop down this season and came back at first chance in 22/23, they'll become a yo-yo club. That model is too unsustainable. QPR and Norwich have done it, and now QPR is firmly entrenched in the Championship while Norwich seems to be in a relegation battle every time they're in the Premier League.

If Everton go down, and even if they don’t, what happens to the filler on high wages? Would any club be willing to take Allan, Iwobi, Mina, Gomes, Delph and Tosun? Or would Everton need to contribute part of their wages just to ship them out? It will take 3-5 years for Everton to dig themselves out of this IF they start making good decisions.

They wouldn't really have a very hard time finding new clubs really. There are still 14 more clubs in the PL that are not a big six that can definitely find some use for them. And PL is not the only big league in the world. There are bound to be some decent clubs that can find some way to use them

@@Raver-1601 On the wages they're on? Paying star player wages to Iwobi? Not sure who would take that punt. Paying the kind of money Delph or Tosun or Gomes are on... Sure, I can see how some clubs might take a punt on the wages of Mina or Allan, but of the others on that list...I can't see it.

I hope Everton get relegated and Burnley stay up, the way Everton have been run spending millions and making stupid decisions they deserve to go down and Burnley hardly spend anything but have added a couple of good signings in last transfer window they play queit defensive but u no your always in for a tough game there and they put up a good fight they deserve to stay up plus Burnley finished queit high up the league a few season ago with not even spending anything

On the other hand Eveerton are a far more exciting team for the league than Burnley. Last season we were top 7 nearly the whole season. I get your point though.

I like the unpredictability of the watford team, i hope they stop up instead of everton. Random things like the 3-0 ending of Liverpool's unbeaten streak, or crushing Man U 4-1 and getting Ole sacked. Wildly variable club

Everton's problems have not just happened this season. The club has been appallingly managed over several years, both on, and even more so off the pitch. Even their Academy is a shadow of its former self, producing hardly any talent at PL level.

Well first thing is you'll need a new manager as Lamps will either walk away or walk the plank. saddens me watching such teams struggling, I admit they had some bad luck with the city game but hey every team has a game like that at least once a season. How some of the players are able to command 200k a week is baffling, there shouldn't be anyone there on more than half that they simply ain't good enough to be paid that much....

Everton (thankfully as an Evertonian for over 40 years) stayed up after what is , by far, their worst season for 24 years (since we stayed up by drawing with Coventry in 1998). But, and this is the big but, what about next season? This season we had a miriad of misfortunes in long term injurries to key players, lack of transfer funds and of course Rafa Benitez. Although to be fair to RB the first two misfortunes were beyond his control. Lampard is a good manager but will he stay if key players are sold and their transfer goes into the debt that they, and only they, are responsible for and not in the funds he desperately needs to re-build the squad? If he and the top players go then Everton are in big trouble and only time will tell if they are to spend a 70th consectutive year in the top flight next season.
