Power is not measured by capita though. The US, by virtue of its size and military, is currently the most powerful. It will likely be overtaken economically by China in the next 10-20 years though. Once it is, the US will face huge issues. Their increasing focus on reducing access to prime education simply to those with capital will prove a very foolhardy strategy with dramatic long-term repercussions. Forming foreign policy simply on the basis of military strength doesn't work long-term. Germany is a country that values scientific enquiry, and that is a huge bonus for long-term growth - one of its strengths. The US sees its scientific enquiry periodically inhibited by Republican incumbents...Trump was the latest to ignore science but he wasn't the first and he certainly won't be the last. Germany is unlikely to run into this increasingly significant handicap. One key reason why US leaders can ignore science and still be voted in, is that the US suffers from a democratic system that favours the votes of those in rural, uneducated areas. If the electoral college were abolished, at a stroke the US would become more powerful. As it stands, appealing to religious and uneducated opinions confers too much power - the only reason Qanon-type republicans & uneducated guys like Trump still gain mandates.
