That Perkins! When I was a Warranty Engineer for the US operation of Deutz I saw a LOT of spun and pounded big end bearings! Usually caused by a low/no oil condition or excessive inclination starving the oil pickup. I could always tell when we got one of those in by the smell! How anybody could run them to destruction, ignoring the rod knocking and smell was beyond me! Some years ago I was on the highway and caught a whiff of that smell, a little later I came up on a semi running along belching smoke. Got on the CB and said: "Hey (company) driver, you got a rod bearing or two going out"! He comes back: "I know, but it's a company rig and I ain't stopping"!

Lee I can’t believe that you are still not protecting your legs by still wearing shorts. At least wearing trousers gives you some protection. Have you noticed on major building sites today they are mandatory. A slip of a sharp piece of metal against your legs will result in a trip to A&E without doubt. You may be the owner but you do need to set a H & S example. From starting in engineering at 15 until retirement I have never required A & E treatment for accidents although as a first aider have taken others there.

Hi Lee, on the machining I would suggest you add a caveat to your 'estimate/quotation' to say you only warrant your machining and not the quality and/or suitability of the parts/materials supplied, I also would list what machining you are doing and to what tolerances, finally say that returns will only be accepted within 14 days of delivery if 'out of specification'. I know it's a pain but almost just a 'cut and paste' but you have to tighten up, else the chancers will win every day in Court if everything is 'verbal'. Another thing to remember, say I gave you 30 seconds in a room with £50, £20 notes, 10p, 5p and 1p coins on the floor which would you pick up in the 30 secs....all the 1p's ...yes you only want the £50 jobs

If your powder coating anything on a car or external in general there are some procedures you should always do 1. blast everything, 2. inspect for broken welds etc. 3 phosphate coat 4. primer coat, 5. top coat, this will give you maximum protection. Powder is quicker than paint that's why it's the industry leader, if your using paint it's almost the same process just paint instead of powder. The problem with powder is repairing any damage you can't just rub it down and recoat as it's on the car whereas with paint you can just rub down and paint, you can repair powder with paint though if you want to, also powder isn't as easy to clean and buff as paint that's why it's used mainly for parts you don't polish. We have coated numerous track cars over the years and never had any problems.
@rosschamberlain1823

Powder coating is fine but for components subject to really harsh conditions especially, a galvanising/etching primer baked on first before the top coat is critical.

Powder coat is a mess when it starts to chip and the water gets under it. Paint works great at least if it chips and even starts to rust you only have to rub the bit down and give it a lick of paint without having to strip it all down again.

My experience with undercarriage powder coated items are they are subject to gravel/rock/manintenance impacts rusulting in chips to the coating. What's more, if the surface has not been immaculately prepared the powder coating can dislodge from the metal surface allowing the ingress of water without being easily notable - so items corrode within the powder coat. In the past, I discovered items that looked good, however when I peeled off the spongy powder coat, the metal below the powder coat was severely corroded. I found that the use of 2k epoxy primer and top coat, is very durable, chip resistant and is not prone to 'large area seperation' from the base metal.

In my past life, if we took a claim to a company ( mainly aerospace or related) the conditions of submitting a claim and it was a contracted agreement, we had to agree that if it was found to not be a warranted claim the contracted amount for labour and materials was owed before the item was released. If it was a warranted claim per the contract then the supplying company met all costs and materials, including if it was a failure after install or delivery to the end customer. This was a part of the original purchase or work agreement and worked, as when we would tell our customers we wanted a deposit from them for the warranty claim to be submitted to the component supplier we ended up with less frivolous claims and properly documented diagnosis. A similar thing may work for you, requiring warranty conditions at the time of original work/supply saves a lot of anxiety on both parties. Take care n play safe.

@@howardbeer5214 with 2 pack the cyanates attach to the haemoglobin in the blood instead of the oxygen. So you just die from oxygen loss. You can spray cellulose paint without an air fed mask . You can spray paint with normal thinners , like tins of paint. It’s not good for you. But not dangerous and lethal like 2 pack. If you’re going to promote its use then tell people to wear an air fed mask.

I always thought of folks spending a bit of wedge with me, I would throw in some free time and maybe a free service or bit but when you are dealing with bitwork and piecemeal stuff you got to be firm and not let them take advantage of your good will. I used to build tailormade water cooled gaming PCs and for those who bought the lot, they did get freebies and a bit of after service and my machines lasted 10 years and always cut a deal to upgrade but them who wanted it all for nothing... they got told to find other and its not I was being mean but lessons learned in folks will take the absolute pi55 to save 50p and I am not in the business of working for nowt :( Developing your customer base is so important to get right, those loyal and good spenders, settle bills quickly always get the prio's, if you have to squeeze them to get paid six months down the line I would kick them into the long grass and let them be someone elses problem...

I understand that powder coating should not be done if the area is prone to abraisive wear... or stone chipping... then rust will get under the coating... With paint the only areaeffected is immediately in the vicinity.. and easily patched... If your terms and conditions are correct on the back of your invoices then you should have a mention that charges will apply if the work carried out is NOT covered by warranty. It is why sometimes both the dealership or the customer have disputes, whereby a customer has a problem and immediately the dealership will say that it is £99.00 or whatever to diagnose. Without looking at the vehicle, nobody can diagnose properly so a customer needs to be advised that a charge may apply but we never charged the full amount because customers do not know what it is at fault. Simply put, if it is warranty then I will rectify everything "Free of Charge". If the fault is due to a customer issue or wear and tear then I will charge for diagnostics or for the repair (I never charged for diagnostics on a repair).

We've been doing engine and turbocharger work for a Land Rover restoration company that exports these vehicles to the U. S.., When I tell them what is needed in terms of the proper and proceduarly correct way of overhauling these engines, they don't listen to me, they know better. I have always stated that the injectors and diesel pumps should be overhauled/replaced always, but no they use the old ones. They try to save money by using old parts, new pistons are too expensive they say, so we have to work around that. This particular company does not even have qualified mechanics or engine assemblers assembling these engines and vehicles. How on earth can one put a warantee/guarantee on the work we do for them? And when there's a failure they have the gall to blame us. Get everything in writing on email because customers like this like to conveniently forget what was said. Is it worth it doing business with them, no.

As far as customer freebies go...you want to be a professional outfit then people have got to get used to dealing with you on that level. Personally, Id be drafting terms and conditions to be agreed by the customer for every job, stating liability is limited to the work done by you, and no liability for anything else. Just lay down as much as you can...get it checked over by a solicitor, and then have customers sign on acceptance of a quote for work.

Lee, if your just doing machine work you warrant your workmanship, I’m afraid these days you have to document everything, I’ve seen other videos where they printout the results of a crank balance, photograph bore & crank size, they video leak down test, unfortunately you have to cover every part of your backside. With this stupid copyright stuff, why carry YT charger a flat fee for having a blinking radio on. Aussie fan🇦🇺

Contract .,... Just put it in plain English exactly what you are liable for, even if the statement is "no warranty" and rely on customer satisfaction and feedback.

Lee & Isaac, stick to your guns, you got bills to pay and can't argue with the Gas or Electric companies, you have to pay end of ,so show no emotions give them a price and a written contract then move on, after your steel toe caps have visited their ass, first class of course, close the door, on another note, Isaac you need to wear your safety glasses on that lathe, you were skimming a flywheel and eyes were to close without glasses, pictures of you BMW prep stages???😎

You do and warrant your work, but you should be clear that you accept no contingent liabilities, ie you’ve nothing to do with any other work done by others or the consequences of failure of the engine if built / assembled by others

Hi Stop apologising for having a life outside of the tube And remember customer is a polite way of saying pain in the arse As for warranty you can only warranty what you have done and in no way are responsible for Johnny fuckwhit with his set of spanners from Tesco not building an engine correctly
Customer complains about me, I email him but his response SHOCKED us!
