regardless of some of the misses by the NHL for this ASG, we should at least recognize the massive improvements when compared to last year. I think the overall format/plan for the weekend was immensely better and the main issues were the incredibly awkward hockey players in front of a massive crowd at the draft and some of the skill competitions being a new/bit complicated which confused the guys.
@plushie9463 ай бұрын
the NHL repeatedly makes the exact same mistake of thinking that NHL players naturally have charisma and experience with working a crowd that will make them fun to see in settings like this. They just don't. They're incredible media trained. You could see that during the draft, where the hosts were trying to start some banter but they'd default to cookie cutter media friendly answers that were "safe". The NHL has a few big personalities but expecting all of them to put on a show like its the WWE is ridiculous
@switchgear1003 ай бұрын
I think they made the right choice in regards to the players in front of massive crowds by giving each team a celebrity captain. Buble and Arnett really carried the draft. I think they should build on this by bringing comedians and personalities like them to off set the rigidness of a lot of nhl players.

Yeah, all-star games in the 80's and early to mid 90's were competitive when it was east vs west. Players cared enough to try back then. There were still no body checking or big slapshots (once in a while, there were), but at least everyone was skating and trying. In yesterday's game where Team Hughes vs Team Matthews, Boeser noticeably didn't even try to skate. Guy skated like an 80 year old man. He's not the fastest skater, but he's not that slow. It seems like he just didn't want to get hurt and barely tried. Miller wasn't much better. At least Hughes was trying.

The NHL all-star weekend (or whatever they call it now), gives the players a mid-season break, but it matters squat to me. The NFL Pro Bowl is there alongside it in terms of meaninglessness. Ottawa seems to always find a way to win 2 or 3 out of every 4 games vs the wings and the game where Lalonde called dude a diver was just part of the latest episode of them finding a way. This was by far the best All star weekend in a long time. For the first time in a long time it felt like the skills competition was not about stupid gimmicks but actual skills and the 3 on 3 was solid. There is definitely room for improvement. The addition of celeb captains was great to offset the awkwardness of the players both a the draft and on the bench for interviews. Next time they need to bring in more people like Arnett and Buble for the other teams. I would also like to them encourage players to not just stack their teams with players from their own team. The fact two teams were essentially just the leafs and canucks made things less interesting then if those players were spread across the 4 teams. They also need at least one more event for the goalies. Whether that is a goalie sprint or trying to get pucks in the far net or something, the fact goalies only had one event to participate in at the end kinda sucked for them. The accuracy event needs to return to scoring based on accuracy not speed. It should be about who can get the targets in the fewest shots not who can throw the most pucks at the net in the short amount of time to hit the targets. Let speed be a tie breaker but the main scoring needs to be done by accuracy. In terms of the 3 on 3 maybe include an extra losers game or something because 3 mini games isn't enough Finally, have every all star participate. It sucked as a Habs fan that Suzuki was not in any of the skills events.

I see people getting mad at the all star game and I don't get it. I watch the skills competition but not the game itself. Its not ment for the dedicated hockey fan. Its for kids, new fans, and the casual sports fan flipping through the channels. If you aren't one of those people, just go enjoy a hockey free weekend.

You’re 100% correct. I loved the skills. But to watch the actual game. 0% effort, I like the fact there is no hitting because who wants to hurt an allstar in a zero game. But like just give them all a break. What a waste of money that paid for those tickets. I remember watching allstar games in 80/90’s when they still hit. Not necessarily huge hits but simple checks and easy vs west. Now it’s literally a joke. Just take a week off mid season to let the players rest for a drag for last half instead of allowing shit players a great holiday and the stars might get hurt for a bullshit weekend. If you’re going to hold a legit allstar game. Throw sticks in the center and go hard. Not bullshit hard but hard. Let’s see stars that can be stars. Get injured, nhl covers. Otherwise don’t waste fans time.

skills is the only thing worth watching. Which is why kuch is a turd. The one thing out of the weekend worth a shit and he cant even care for 2 seconds. Then bench players like Aho and Kaprizov. Players i would want to watch because they are on a team i cheer for. They get shafted so kuch can give the middle finger to the league.

It wasn't entirely dull; the mascot dodgeball game was enjoyable to watch.

Idk if this works for the all star game but a cool idea would be to have the best 4 or so players from the NHL, who are willing, coach and draft a team of the best players from like bantam-midget. Then have a tournament. Those games would get so competitive and be way more fun to watch.

I love the Stutzle haters. You showed the video and it was pretty clear he was tripped up. The same whining goes on all the time but no one mentions that Detroit has several egregious interference calls missed that game and I didn't see Jaques Martin calling up the league on the matter.

I scolded my dad just a tiny bit because he was complaining that they weren’t playing like if it was for the Stanley Cup. 😂 Players don’t want to hinder their season by wasting too much energy in the All Star Events and it’s not much like if they were given the choice to come once invited.

Aging myself pretty hard here but they use to be ALOT of fun to watch. Mid to late 90’s all star games were top tier and they actually tried.
