Footballers used to look tough and play tough, show their strength. These days, they flop over from a mere touch on their shoulder etc, then proceed to writhe in pain as though they require emergency surgery. Only to see them make a miraculous recovery seconds after the play acting. Pathetic.

If you need a whole team to calm down your center back you know what an immense power Stam had. Imagine the best strikers shitted their pants when feeling Stams breath in their neck. When they turned around they saw an almost not breaking through wall and when they tried to look in his eyes they saw nothing but nearing death.... Love Jaap Stam!

Vidic was overrated. He was considered better than he actually was because of Ferdinand. Just like the Nesta/Cannavaro relationship. Nesta was the general, Cannavaro the soldier. The great thing about Stam is, that he had the ability to play both these roles brilliantly.

Zlatan was pretty hard compared to modern day players, but start in on a Jaap Stam that played in England in the 90s is verging on suicide. Duncan Ferguson was the only one I ever saw give Stam a run for his money.

Yep, pity they never had a proper dust up. I remember them tussling a few times when he was a Newcastle and it was a great battle; but they were both very fair & respectful of each other. Duncan had cooled down a bit in his Newcastle days. Rangers or Everton Duncan however; my god. Probably the most intimidating person I’ve seen on a football pitch. Made Vinnie Jones look like a nancy boy.

Still mind boggling to know that he left United at age 29 for Lazio which was quite a good club back in 2001, but nowhere near United's level nor AC Milan where he joined in 2004 at age 32. Not sure what was the reason for his tenure at Lazio but with the notion of his incredible performance even at AC Milan, he was still in his prime when he left United
