Today, I go digging through the basement, and pull out a machine that has a special place in my heart, my ThinkPad 380D which has suffered a hard life, and will likely suffer more in the pursuit of documenting history. Featuring cameo appearances of OS/2 Warp Connect, IBM "Easy" Setup, FreeDOS, handwritten data recovery utilities, and even a special sealed box of Microsoft software ...

Those Thinkpads never give up, that model is one of the best models produced. Quick tip: when grounding yourself from static, the table is not directly grounded by the rug it is standing on. You should touch a radiator or water pipe to fully ground yourself. Great video and nice story about the laptop.

TLDR; In short: THE BUTTERFINGERS AND THE WORKPLACE HAVE TO BE ON THE SAME POTENTIAL, a.k.a. your body connected to the table/workplace mat. Anything else is NONSENSE! RTFM:) Yes, and click your heels three times and make a wish. I assume you are joking. Here applies physics and not magic:) The workplace must have the same potential as the operating personnel. So at least a grounded table and a conductive bracelet that has an ohmic connection to the work surface, the table and the surface of the table, the work area. Everything else is internet jokes. Imagine touching your radiator... citing a voodoo spell ... and then go back at work, rubbing some nice electrons of your polyester shirt off on the edge of the table. Roasting some CMOS-p/n gates in the process. Hello radiator, hello unrelated earth (the real earth) ground ... wink wink, nudge nudge:) I hope you didn't mean that seriously, did you? Read a book on the subject or ask someone who knows about it, or learn the trade. It really isn't rocket science. But the way you described it doesn't work at all, hehehe:)

@@dieSpinnt Ohmic connection, operatng personnel ? you mean wire and the dude in the video I guess. My comment only pointed out that in order to ground yourself then you must be in contact with something grounded to earth ie. a copper water pipe or wall socket. NOT a table on top of a carpet acting as an insulator. How can static discharge (electricity) flow through an unearthed table or supervisorial appointed personnel work surface as you put it. why do you think electrical earth wires are connected to copper pipes and not fixed to a loo roll holder 🤐Touching a grounded copper pipe is good enough to discharge static electricity, that's a known fact and not an internet joke. Of course if you work in the nude then there is no worry of rubbing a polyester shirt is there 🤭

i do have a 365XD and 560 and 380ED and 600. the 365XD, 560, and 380ED seem to all work, the 365XD and 560 both got TFT, the 380ED got a STN though sadly.

One of the peculiar things that's passed through my hands was a 386 laptpp with a NiCad battery that had been rebuilt by using off-the-shelf rechargeables. Worked fine, but sure looked funny inside. (The rebuilder, whomever it might be, had left it unsealed so it would be easy to rebuild again in the far future, when we will once again need 386 laptops. ;) It has since been passed on to some lesser unfortunate. Bizarre Windows tricks: In days of yore my test rig was a 486DX4-100 (because it was not fussy and supported pretty much anything you could attach to it). One day when it happened to have 8mb of RAM installed, I grabbed the wrong HD, and soon found myself watching Win2K boot up. (Note that its sysreqs are a Pentium and 64mb RAM.) It took about 5 minutes to reach the desktop, but after that ran well enough to use (a bit sluggish but not terrible -- even with no swapfile). Anyway, it's a trick worth knowing if Windows-Ancient does not want to install on Even-Older-Hardware. -- And I still have this, around here somewhere....

There's actually an easier way to do that. MOST versions of Windows of that vintage will take /im as an argument to "setup" or winnt and disable the memory check.
@Reziac
@Reziac 4 жыл бұрын
True, but can you disable the CPU check? as I vaguely recall, Win2K did check for a Pentium CPU. During install, at least; apparently not during bootup. Knew a guy who ran Win95 on a 386 (I vaguely recall that it was, even worse, an SX16, albeit with a then-whopping 16mb RAM). Said it took 15 minutes to boot, but was usable enough after that... and he used it for programming. Well, we're certainly gonna optimize our code, aren't we!

Those Thinkpads are prone to have failed memory sockets. The memory module hangs down and the weight of the modules makes the solder break on the socket on thousands of bangs on the table over the years. Reflowing the solder on the Socket works wonders. good luck!

It's a pretty flawed design still used on modern laptops. I've replaced a couple motherboards at work (machines less than 4 years old) due to memory sockets having a loose connection to the board, and have had it happen on personal laptops as well. One of the rare cases where having pre-soldered components is better, as there is much less force exerted on the joints, especially when the chips are BGA (like modern RAM chips) and the package is "glued" to the board instead of hanging.
@dieSpinnt
@dieSpinnt Жыл бұрын
Two options: Giving up or supporting the flawed mechanism with a little physical help ... Wood, Glue, Rubber ... oh, we are in the times of 3D Printers now ... Just a stupid suggestion, a little food for thought from me. I mean additional to the inevitable solder joints that break again ... which unfortunately are soft connections and are not designed for mechanical stress. I do not wish good luck, but I wish that you use the appropriate method to fix that flaw;) (Meant funny, not patronizing!:) )

I have a 380D and E myself, pretty sexy bricks. The EDO expansion is a bit tricky, I managed to buy one for part with the 64 module already installed. I put OS/2 warp on it and even got some sort of internet browing experience after some fight. Appart from that I obly played with voice recongnition (pretty bad) and played midis from the floppy ... the 380D really is nice for that, the sound is "good" even compared with modern laptos with nanospeakers.

I have a 380D 2635-3AU. When I got it it had a 64MB RAM stick installed that only displayed as ~48MB, just like the situation you're in. The odd thing is it did not result in any memory errors in the BIOS diagnostic tool. After having used the laptop semi-regularly for a month the laptop stopped booting but didn't throw POST codes, and when I ran a diagnostic it showed the exact same codes as you for memory (DEVICE 002; ERR 83; FRU 2010). It still did show 48MB detected, however. Without the ram stick in it shows the default 16MB that's soldered in and there's no error messages any more. I am considering buying another 64MB stick for testing however I'm suspecting there is an issue with the socket itself, given how your situation is nearly identical to mine. I know it is a 2 year old video at this point but if you've had any luck with this RAM issue I'd love to know!

@@martinerzberger5419 Microsoft had heavy influence on Motif, and WIndows Chicago builds as well as OS/2 have a pretty deep resemblance to it out of the box, although not nearly as much as the Win95 betas did.

Are you sure you ran NT 4.0 on an 8MB machine? I am pretty sure, 12MB was the absolute minimum.
@NCommander
@NCommander 3 жыл бұрын
12 MiB is the minimum. NT 3.51 will appartantly load w/ 8 but um, thrashing was a thing.
@DavidWonn
@DavidWonn 2 жыл бұрын
If you tweak the boot ini, cloning the main entry by appending the MAXMEM switch, you can make NT 3.51 start with as little as 6 MB. As you gradually decrease it with decimal values, you’ll get to a point where it logs you in but the Program Manager shell won’t ever initialize. Go too low, and it just blue screens. But yeah, I’ve never bothered installing with less than 16 MB for version 3.51 or higher.
