I did almost ten years in maximum security, and while I can respect a person for a philosophical stance on non-violence, in places like that, choosing not to engage in violence (more often than not) just creates an even more ripened culture of predation where you live. Bullies get encouraged and emboldened by their victims and the victims of others. An appropriate amount of force is oftentimes the prefect deterrence to a future of violence. You can't speak poetry to someone who isn't a poet-- when you meet a swordsman, draw your sword.

"I don't want to fight" well that's just too bad. The one thing I was often told by ex-cons was that if I ever found myself in prison, some lowlife maggot would try it on to steal my shit and that the entire prison would be watching. Doesn't matter whether one wins or loses, as long as one has a go standing up for himself. This story is a good example of what happens when you don't.

The last thing you said is key… not EVERYTHING needs to turn into a fight… don’t go in there guns blazing either.. odds are there’s someone badder than you. Only fight if it’s disrespect- if you’re getting tested. I knew a dude from county who got sent to a sober living type of house in place of the joint…. He fucked up there and it followed him all the way to prison. I’ll be straight up. I was a soft white dude, and I could have had a real shitty time. I was from a nice area and just got mixed up with opiates, eventually landing me in prison for my first offence. Part of it was luck, part of it was the fact that there were soo many strung out suburban white Boys in the downtown (urban af) jail system in the late 2000’s… they were able to give me a crash course in what not to do real quick. A few things that saved my ass: I can draw. In fact I was a classically trained fine arts major (of course nobody fucking knew that- I had enough sense not to share that lol)… this is good because dudes always want to send drawings/cards to their loved ones on the outs… the shit they wanted was always retarded as fuck. Skulls, roses, big tiddied bitches… if you can draw that’s currency. Find a hustle. * also I can read and write proficiently… lots of dudes can’t. A few times I wrote letters for people, spell checked letters to judges, I even wrote a gay ass love letter for a dude to send to his girl trying to convince her to ride with him…. This is a fine line though- you don’t want to come off as a scholar nerd. Don’t speak the queens English, just casually be like “yeah I can read and write good” Second thing that was good for me- I straight up fucking hate juice. The apple juice, orange juice grape juice… fucking hate that Tropicana bullshit. Let me tell you something about black dudes: they fucking love juice, let me tell you another thing about black people: they hate milk. I love milk, I was trying to get in shape because I knew I had a bit ahead of me (more good advice- workout if you’re facing time… don’t be fuckin Rocky running up the chow tables, but lift some water bags)…. I traded my juice for milk every time, with one dude in particular… kind of think of it as building credit… every time you honour a deal your trust credit goes up- he wasn’t bullying me into trading or anything, but he was a big ass black dude. Basically we had business. Eventually we became cool (as cool as a white hipster first timer and a Blood could be). 3rd thing that helped me was being funny….. you gotta be really fucking careful with this. You gotta make sure you’re making dudes laugh at what you’re saying , not at you. You gotta know what’s too far, you can’t constantly be doing Jerry Seinfeld standup bits like “what’s the deal with these coffee cakes? They’re not coffee and they’re not cake!”…. But fuck man, if you can get the boys rolling then you’re good… you’re helping the time pass, which is what we all want at the end of the day- but use discretion: if a dude just got back from court and finds out he was denied probation and is shipping out, dudes probably not in the mood. But I had a few big dudes who I could clown with…. When new inmates come in and see you laughing with the boys they register you like “oh he’s got people, he’s must be chill”…. Don’t be a weirdo and hide in bed all day. You gotta mix with people, if you don’t fit in, make yourself fit in… I wasn’t talking about craft beers and nirvana when I was in there, you’re gonna have to be flexible. You need people for your own sanity, and if you’re a fckin mute it’s gonna make people uneasy or think you’re hiding something. Another quick tip: phone time is a bitch. When all the dudes rush for the phones, just chill if you can. If dudes are in line and you can wait for rush hour to end, just do it. Little things like that can just keep you removed from any potential issues. Again, this is if you’re trying to avoid conflict at all costs.., don’t inconvenience yourself, but stay out of chaos as much as you can. If you’re next in line for the phone and you’ve got a dude ahead of you who’s phone call ends and he immediately picks it back up and dials back, he’s saying “fuck you, my time is more valuable than yours… what’s good?”… do you want to fight in that instance? Technically you absolutely should, but you don’t want to. Just wait until the phones are free if you can. You have to be an anthropologist and casually conduct your own ethnographic research in your head. An anthropologist observes, adopts new customs, doesn’t question stuff/doesn’t push their views and customs. You need to embrace the experience and learn to push through. Every hard experience you go through makes you stronger… if you learn to embrace the struggle then there is no struggle. Your attitude is *Fucking Everything*… it’s literally all you have, besides some bags of milk and an old maxim magazine. Nobody can take away your mindset. Not the guards, not the kid banging on tables rapping at 4 am, not the fat dude snoring… remember that it will pass. You will see your family again. You will order a beer at a bar. You will get pussy again. Time is just time. The experience made me stronger and more resilient. I was always a good bullshitter and master manipulator. The experience is humbling because you’re not going to sweet talk your way out of time with a judge. Living in the bottom of the forgotten waste bin of society puts stuff in perspective. Learning gratitude for freedom is a beautiful thing. Today I’m on track to getting a PhD in Psychology, and you bet your ass my time in prison is an asset to me today. If you find a way to make the experience work for you then it’s a positive. The legal system is a goddamn disgrace- I realize I can’t fix it, but I’m going to try my best to help specifically young men so they don’t end up there. Society is falling, and it’s falling because values like integrity, honour and civility are falling … it’s falling because men are falling. Some of the best people I met will never see freedom again, and some of the shittiest people I know are driving to an office in a Mercedes. Learn to tame the reptile, primate brain and better yourself and you will better the world. Respectfully, 608-173

It will fade with time. I did 14 years, and when I came home, life was hard, I didnt understand how to live anymore. When people would do or say things that would be disrespectful in prison o reacted to it like I was still there, it took awhile for me to gain a new understanding, the same as it takes time to adapt to there. Honestly some groups or people to talk to he respects might make a difference and help. You have to go back to normal life, he has PTSD and emotional damage.

Problem is anyone can make a mistake.....takes one drink too many and getting in an accident...... One punch in a fight that knocks out someone who falls, hits their head and dies...any number of things. The other problem is that the justice system is not about people and has zero capacity to even contemplate situations where people might have the opportunity to be helped. They have no interest or heart and are like robots that only know how to do things one way...destroying people and in many cases, families.

had a conversation recently with my nephew about not letting people take stuff from you. He is 8, and wanted to bring a $100 toy to school. I told him "make sure nobody tries to take it from you. If someone asks to see it, make sure it's somebody you trust to give it back. If they try to take it, take it back." He was apprehensive and asked "did that ever happen to you?" i told him yes, and told him a story about when i was on a school trip and a kid from a different school tried to take my hat. I took it back and made it clear I'd fight to keep it. I told my nephew, "if you let one bad person take something from you, other bad people will see that and think THEY can take your stuff, too. You stop it the first time." He's a generous kid, but he has already stood up for himself a few times, just hasnt had THIS situation happen and i was trying to prepare him if somebody tried to steal his toy. Many parents say "tell a teacher", but honestly that's bad advice most of the time for a young boy.

I’ve been working in Corrections for 12years. I’m a Sergeant now at the Facility I’m at now and I tell all the new Officers coming in to always treat the men and women that they are there to watch over and keep Security over to treat with respect. That doesn’t mean let them run over you or other Inmates in the unit. It means treat them how you would want to be treated, how you would want your family members treated, but by all means when it’s time do do your job I EXPECT AND DEMAND that YOU do your Job by the Policies and Procedures that are put in place. They are there to keep you out of Trouble with the law yourself and to maintain Order within the Facility. I also remind them that, yes there are people there that will never change and will always choose to do criminal activities, but there are some and a good bit that are there that made a bad decision and are paying their consequences for it. These people will be getting out one day and they could be on your neighborhood or even your neighbors. So don’t come to work trying to make enemies out of everyone because that is what you will get and your days on the job will be long and miserable!

I mean you always have a choice but the results if u choose wrong can be worse then if you just took a black eye, bloody nose, whatever and got the fight over with. Shoot, you might even win lmao. Even if you scared. But win or lose, it's about respect. Dude in video really solid cuz he could have tried to ho dude around too being his own celly after the first time he saw he wouldn't fight. But he kept trying coach dude mistake after mistake when he didn't have to. Prison is a whole different beast with set of rules that I don't desire to experience. But even outside of prison, the common denominator I feel is standing up for yourself to be respected. In or out..

She just started college and her roommate was trying to bully her and she told me about it. Her roommate was waking her up on purpose just so she couldn't sleep. My daughter is a pre-med student and doesn't sleep much anyways. Her roommate is going to be a teacher. So I told her she better stand up for herself otherwise it will only get worse in life. She finally said something to her roommate and put her in her place. Next thing I know the roommate was gone for 2 days spending nights somewhere else. That shit stopped right away. I'm proud of her because my daughter is kind and nice but I told her when people start shit you finish it. Now she has so much more confidence.

Im from Southern California, in association with the crips, however I was no die-hard member who started banging when i still had to be inside by the time street lights turned on. I did square things like work jobs, have girlfriends and hang with non affiliate friends at the beach. But at 27 I catch a case that I spend two years in county over to end up taking a nine-year deal which left me doing seven years in prison. Well the night of me catching the chain i was in a holding cell with a OG gangmember from a well known Compton set who was down from Prison on a family court case (he was also in a wheelchair). We got acquainted over the night and he told me some things that carried me all the way through my prison sentence and I will never forget to this day. He told me the first thing you need to know about prison is that every room you walk into theres somebody in there doesn't like you for some reason. And if you're going to survive you have to be on the lookout for these people and when they present themselves you don't back down or shy away from the issue. That doesn't mean go looking for that problem because the problem will present itself, just be ready when it comes. I ended up doing 7 years out of that 9 never going PC, never being considered a fish, or anything weak all because I had a set mind set of what I know I can't tolerate from any other individual inside that place.

Just like in life. You either face the bully or they continue to bully you. I tried to "ignore the bully" in school. Eventually things got to the point where I was a constant target until one day in the 4th grade I snapped and brutalized a guy who laughed at me for being down about my grandfather dying of cancer. After that I was a ball of rage that took out his frustrations on everyone who ever tormented him. I was still occasionally targeted by bullies, but by this time by pain tolerance was at a level where a shot to the face simply pissed me off even further. One kid found out the hard way that I was done with his shit when I spun him around and sent him sailing across pavement. And that's been my creed for the last 30 years. "When someone gets in your way with malicious intent, crush them."

If you don't stand up for yourself when you get messed with, that mess is gonna keep getting worse, and harder to deal with when you finally do. This video made me remember something that happened in my life. Some 10-15 years back, this dude I grew up with moved to a spot in Oakland, CA. He's a Japanese cat, on the shorter/lighter side of the tape & scales. After he got settled, I went out to his spot to kick it. His crib wasn't in the worst part of town but it wasn't up in the hills either. When I got there we strolled down to the corner for some tall cans. On the way he tells me he got jumped by some kids in the hood. They smacked him around and took his wallet. He said we might might run into them. Now I ain't the biggest/toughest dude on the street, but I ain't the smallest/weakest cat on the block neither. I told him I'm down to scrap if that's what it is, but I'm not trying to take care of his problem for him. He was like, "You would mop those punks." I stopped walking right there to make sure I had his attention. I told him like this, "If we run into whoever and they give me a problem, I'm gonna handle MY problem one way or the other, but I don't gotta live here. I could roll out after and never come back, never see them again. You live here, and these kids live here too. No matter what happens if we see them while I'm here, yer gonna see them again without me. If we see them today, and you don't do nothin, it's gonna be worse for you next time you see them." He was like, "What am I supposed to do? I'm small and I can't fight." I said, " You're going to get your ass kicked anyway, so you might as well not rollover like a bitch, and give em a fight. There ain't no rules posted out here. It don't matter how you get down in a fight. You just gotta fight. Who knows? You might get lucky? If you don't stick up for yourself, you're a mark. You're easy pickins. Every time you see one of these kids they're gonna pocket check you cuz they can. Somehow, someway, you have to earn the respect you need to live out here. Otherwise pack your shit and find another place to live before they see you again. It's the same everywhere though. It don't matter where you are, everywhere is the same. If you rollover, there will always be someone more than happy to roll you." In the end, we didn't end up running into them. We grabbed our beers n hung out for a minute, then i bounced. I haven't seen him since. Talked to him a few times but that never came up. I know things are different than how it is in the pen. The principle remains the same though, and it's the same everywhere in life. Like I said at the top... If you don't stand up for yourself when you get messed with, that mess is gonna keep getting worse, and harder to deal with when you finally do.

This is something I tried to explain to my family and girlfriend and stuff when I got out, you aren't really able to say no to a fight. You're better off fighting when someone disrespects you and getting beat up than choosing to look away and take it. Personally I didn't have to deal with it much, only got in 1 little scrap not much happened though, the fact that I worked out alot and made friends with alot of them probably helped, I made it pretty obvious that I was down to scrap if the wind blows that way and honestly that's all it really takes to not get fucked with.

This situation is a kid that still wanted to live that life while also scared of fighting, which pretty much 80% of guys today that's why they don't want you to touch their guns. I try to live my life well but lord knows what can happen, my faith is God is above ALL and while I may not make it through without a scratch I'm not joining a gang inside as my protection. God makes things happen. So moral is, love your life well so you don't have to learn but if so it's time to change your life, find God and you'll learn like the rest of us who were once violent he will be with you.
