In the wonderful world of military surplus collecting, it can be very difficult in challenging these days. The cheapest and most abundant military surplus rifles coming into the country today are the Carcanos from Italy and Ethiopia. When they get scooped up, a lot of collectors and enthusiasts also look for 6.5 Carcano. It now appears that 6.5 Carcano is "Unobtainium"... well there are solutions if you actually take the time to look around. Here are my ideas and solutions! Take a screenshot!

Update 2/15/24… a new website, Milsurp Munitions, is anticipated to make 6.5 Carcano Ammo. They will launch their website on 2/16/24! Edit: the 2/16/2024 launch introduced their 6.5 Carcano loads. They used the .264 bullets for these but stated they would make some with .268 bullets later on.

Here in Australia I get loads of PPU 6.5 carcano, sometimes Norma but it super pricey compared to PPU. I have reproduction clips and they work ok for me in my m91, m38 to come soon. 2x surplus using the same ammo is perfect!

The problem I have is finding the clips to load the Carcano with. I finally gave up, and I ordered a device that could be inserted to where I could fire it one round at a time. Reloading theCarcano strips without bending them is an art all its own. Direct question to you, Mr. Battlefield curator if you know how to load these clips, then you should do a video exclusively unloading the Carano strips.

Retro, The Carcano is a good rifle but what makes it suck is the clips. When the Italian soldiers had the rifle. All the clip were factory loaded. No one can show me how to load a clip without bending it.@@Retro_Retriever55

The solution to help with the clips is to find surplus clips or surplus 7.35 ammo loaded on clips. Then just use the surplus clips but even then, they are not perfect.

I know the repro clips aren't great, but originals are getting tougher and tougher to find. Any chance you could make a video of how to bend/manipulate the clips to make them function best?

PPU makes .268 bullets. Just got some from Graf and Son. I thought the newer ammo from them had the bigger bullets.

Steinel ammo is very downloaded in 6.5, the steinel 7.35 is loaded about Italian army velocity, and is very accurate, that is the excellent 128 grain pointed soft point, they don't make it anymore, the Norma 6.5 is loaded hot, very accurate in my 6.5 cavery carbine .

Hopefully they load the 6.5 a little hotter, steinel has the proper bullet diameter, but the loads are weak, I love the company's 45/70 trapdoor load excellent, the 7.35 carcano 128 grain jacketed soft point, excellent plus.

@@BattlefieldCurator especially when I have firearms that are obsolete. That ammo is no longer made for. The m95 straight pull is what started my reloading efforts.

In my latest attempt at a successful 6.5x52mm Carcano load I am getting gas blowback into my face. Some sources suggest this is caused by an underpowered load not fully expanding the brass into the chamber and therefore not creating a tight enough seal to keep gases and debris from escaping backwards around the bolt. Is this something you are familiar with or believe can happen in some situations?

I have not dealt with this. The Koba49 channel might have some information, he has a lot of knowledge on the Carcano

I can wait for 6.5 carcano since I am not in a rush but is their an alternative way of doing a muzzle test if the ammunition isn't available? I am considering to buy a pin gauge set to see my vetterli 1870/87/15 is okay (it wasn't a B Grade since the B Grades cost $150 at the time. I purchased this one for $200 with a free en bloc clip) and I am questioning the barrel condition.
@BattlefieldCurator
@BattlefieldCurator 4 ай бұрын
I’d be cautious with those Vetterli conversions. They don’t like .268 bullets from what I’ve read and can pose a safety risk. Do you own research with those.

I am aware that vetterli conversions are like ticking time bombs. I just wanted to know if there is any other alternative method of doing a muzzle/bore test if you don't have bullet projectile. I didn't mention this as well but I have 5 carcanos; I own 3 cavalry carbines, a TS carbine and a 1891 model. They came out fine and from RTI. The Vetterli conversion I have is an AOI marked but missing the magazine cutoff, which I don't think is a big deal, but inside the barrel has a lot of shit. @@BattlefieldCurator

@@tomc6255If you can't find a test bullet you could lead slug the barrel and measure it. Or even cast it with cerrosafe. Another posability is to resize a larger down bullet with a sizing die to test.

Don’t expect to be making any accurate shots unless you manage to find factory ammo loaded with .268” diameter bullets. Even ппу still only uses .264” bullets.
