Richard, if your Kestrel Weather meter has LiNK you can use the Kestrel LiNK ® Ballistics Phone App to set the Kestrel's Latitude from your phones GPS. You can also use your phone in a similar way as the new Kestrel HUD.

I’ve managed to convert a Kestrel vane for the Weatherflow, just added a Javelin light optics magnet mount so I can use tripod for multiple items more easily

Thanks Richard. Listened to this a few times and learnt so much. I’m beginning to dabble with longer ranges with my 223 1:8. The way forward for me could be the SIG Sauer Kilo 2400 ABS as an upgrade to my basic (rimfire suitable) rangefinder and Kestral 2000. Rangefinder and ballistic solution in one piece of kit. So much to learn ☺️. Thanks Dylan.

I have the kestrel hornady 5700. It has Berger’s, Lapua, and Sierra with 4dof applied ballistics. I just checked the app

Hi Richard, Its worth noting that the free Lapua ballistics app, its 6dof, also has custom drag functions for its bullets. This includes the 155 gr scenar for those shooting 308s.

Great great great. Thanks you. Just stopped using Hornady app. It was crashing on me, out in the field. Shooting 1250m with 6.5C so need something solid. Would love a video showing this kit in use.

Excellent video and lucrative information that you have provided that I trust is accurate. Thus In my book, you have just surpassed the TiborasaurusRex (sorry Rex). I prefer ranging targets using ranging reticle either mill-radian or minute of angle but prefer moa for smaller targets. For more accuracy one can use a theodolite, a precise instrument used for surveying. I use an older (non electronic theodolite), which can measure an angle to within 20 seconds. The theodolites of old, are built like tanks and will never fail (no electronics) and an absolute joy to use with a high quality tripod (32x - 36x optic is standard) and can be found on Ebay when surveyors retire and sell their equipment. Of course you must know the size of your target to range using this technique, and the target can appear smaller or larger depending on your angle of view, so it can get tricky. The theodolite can also be used to determine the angle of fire but with less accuracy. Since I'm into construction, my theodolites have multi-use. It gets very expensive to shoot with accuracy at distances where projectile drops below 1500 fps so not worth the cost for me, and range finders can be problematic.

Hi Richard Just to let you know the Lapua custom drag functions are available in Strelok Pro for Free

Great video thank Richard. I have the 5700 ballistics, is it worth upgrading to the software on the elite model for shooting up to 1200 yards,? Think it works out£250 with the dongle. Cheers Matt

Try using the Hornady 4DOF App, it’s free and it has some Berger, Sierra, DTAC, and other bullets. They will be continually adding bullets as well. Get your weather from a weather app and station and other phone apps.

I believe the Hornady 4DOF also integrates and connects via Bluetooth with Kestrel (and other) devices to input real-time data an settings.

Excellent video Richard. Do any of the manufacturers, like Kestrel, or Garmin ever contact people like yourself who use their products day in, day out, for your thoughts on improvements, whats missing, whats not good?
@RichardUttingSharpshootingUK3 жыл бұрын
Yes I am liaising with Kestrel and in the winters when my training days season is done I consult for various manufacturers but yeah Kestrel reached out and asked for feedback despite being already very much the A Team kit

Why exclude cold bore shots from MV values when most hunting shots will be through a cold bore? Wouldn't that be the MOST important to know?
@RichardUttingSharpshootingUK3 жыл бұрын
Yep good point. Always worth knowing what your cold bore does. However when shooting strings over the chrony to say inform powder temp variations , you need to know the AVG without that disproportionally slow first shot wrecking the accuracy of the average.

Richard obviously multiple ways to skin a cat. That being said doing the same thing with the Sig Kilo 2400abs. It has the Applied Ballistics built in for about 1200 dollars in the states and no need for the Garmin. That is a savings of about 700 dollars. Once you true your tables it’s an instant and correct solution. No need for a fancy Kestrel either since it has all the needed weather data built in as well.

In 701 If you hold and stop the numbers button and therefore range needed... for three sec increments.... it makes fine tuning easy But yeah if you hold the range up and down button It is exponential as how fast the numbers go up and down

I love the kestrel truing method. No need to chrono. The software extrapolates the muzzle velocity for the current conditions. By truing, you're matching the real world performance of the bullet to your software. after that, new conditions are just applied over the top of it. however, your muzzle velocity changes based on conditions as well. so you're going to have to chrono your gun every time you shoot it to know the "fundamental variable defining drag".... or, you can true it, and let the software guess what the velocity will be in the next condition you shoot in. is this the perfect way of doing it? no. but a kestrel will give more use than THE chrono. simply knowing your velocity doesn't mean anything if you can't apply the numbers to figure out what's going to happen to the bullet.
