I just inherited a 6.7l PS and wanted a little insight. Great video. I would hazard a guess that the Donaldson filter has a thicker ring, bigger inlet holes, and a stiffer bypass spring to compensate for the higher passthrough resistance of oil thorough the filter media with a smaller micron rating. I have no idea how much the oil psi would be increased, but i ASSUME it would be in a range that would not harm the overall lubrication system and would not impede the volume of flow to a significant degree... anyone have thoughts on this assumption?

Both filters are good! But here at the shop we run only Donaldson for the class 8 trucks. Once again a great comparison my friend. Wishing you a merry Christmas and happy New Year. 🎄👍🇨🇦

Here's my question to many of the commenters; why the Donaldson over the Ford since the Ford has a much greater sq in of filter area? Many of the Donaldson features are superior but I have a hard time dismissing the filter area.

I have a 6.7 Powerstroke that uses both of these filters. I definitely love the Donaldson with Rotella T5! My oil samples always come back showing great filtration and clean oil at 5k OCI. Thanks for the video, WCW. Regards,

Donaldson has some good videos on here. I guess the Donaldson Blue is the good one and lots of off highway Cat diesels run these as well. Dozers, loaders etc.

Awesome Video! I work as a Caterpillar Heavy Equipment Mechanic for a dealer. We sell and use Donaldson as a second choice to CAT Filtration. They make awesome filters!

The Donaldson inlet holes are positioned further out and angled out as well. Id assume that helps with the flow of the unfiltered oil outwards instead of bouncing around the top of the baseplate. I'd have to give this one to the Donaldson filter.

I like Motorcraft, especially with that top style bypass valve but that Donaldson filter media is top notch. Overall, I’m saying Donaldson takes it! When measuring the fully synthetic “gauze” type filters I would suggest not squeezing the media while measuring it. It’s like measuring a sheet of typing paper and a paper towel and saying the paper towel is thinner after compressing it.

I do not own a diesel but an interesting show. Big filters! Merry Christmas. Good show.

Working at the Ford dealer I’ve noticed that most of the 6.7 PSD aftermarket oil filters look to be the same can and baseplate as the Motorcraft. Baldwin and Donaldson are two exceptions. Mann + Hummel seems to make their own Purolator and Wix filters along with farming out all the auto parts store brands and obviously Motorcraft which they make.

Cool video but I’d rather have seen you compare the Motorcraft filter to a Donaldson blue filter. If these are for diesel applications then the Blue filter is the one that you should have used. From the looks of it, the Motorcraft filter is the superior filter over the standard Donaldson, but like I said, I would’ve rather have seen the Donaldson blue filter in this comparison.. cheers.

👍👍👍 First obvious and impressive notation is the embossed date and time code of the Donaldson. The mark of a quality Mfd! I've never heard of Donaldson Filters, but then I don't drive diesel. Overall, I was more impressed with the Donaldson filter even with less pleats. Did I miss the OEM's rated mileage intervals/replacement? How does that compare vs the micron rating's? As a note: I suspect that Donaldson is using a filter media typically used for water dirt and microbe filtration to extreme levels. Only being is that oil is very much more viscous!

Donaldson takes credit for getting engines away from oil bath air cleaner. And I think their filter media is proprietary!

It might be benficial to do a compairson on Motorcraft Oil Filter FL2124S which is now being marketed as replacing Motorcraft FL-2051S (at least on Amazon).

Donaldson only makes filters, I think I would go for that. Even though there's is more filter on the motorcraft

Motorcrafts micron ratings are weird. 80% at 20 could mean 99@ ?? . There needs to be a standard...like 99% at 35 vs 99% at 20....you know which filters better.

Solution for "little awkward" weighing problem: Weigh them BEFORE opening them.

My biggest question is that Donaldson has so much less filter media how's it going to do over the life of the filter in lines of capacity compared to the motocraft?

Let’s consider a home air filter. One could buy those cheap ass see through fiber strand filters. Even if one were to add 10 layers of it, the filtration would still be abysmal to even the lowest rated MERV pleated filter. I completely understand surface area, but consider effective surface area. If ya got a new truck with minimal sludge build up, and wanna keep her runnin’ for a long time with retention of power. Don’t scrimp on your filters secondary to price. Trust me, it is the cheapest insurance you can buy. Same goes for oil. I didn’t know this, but Amsoil is the only 100% motor oil available (that I know of). All your “Full Synthetics”😆😂😆, have to only legally have 25% of synthetic to be labeled “Full Syn”! What!!!!! Yep, 100% true, and if you really believe that your full synthetic oil of choice is providing more than 25%😂. Hey, these companies are all for profit, and will cut corners at your expense. Both you and I have been duped for years. Microscopically speaking, the difference b/t syn and conventional is the difference b/t marbles and gravel. But don’t take my word for it, look it up yourself. Will conventional oil or “full syn - not 100%” work? Yes, absolutely, but if and when you reach extreme high mileage, don’t scratch your head as to why you have significant power loss. If ya live in dusty environments, a 5k oil change is probably not a good idea. Remember, it is recommended at 5k, but that’s the general recommendation, consider your environment. Your truck/ your choice. Lastly, why do you think many semi tractor trailer trucks obligately use Donaldson? Trust me when I say, “Your ride ain’t gonna see a fraction of the mileage put on those engines 🤔. That’s big money to replace or repair those engines. You don’t think they got oil filtration figured out yet? One last thing, STAY THE HELL AWAY from reusable oiled air filters (K&N or anything that resembles it - hint: look up Project Farm KZfaq air filter). Anyway, that’s my two cents.
