I just replaced the filter for the first time since buying the refrigerator; and after watching this video and reading some of the comments, it worked perfectly. Turning off the "Replace Filter" light also was no problem. I strongly suggest that you watch the video a couple of times and read through the comments. There are some potential pitfalls that can be easily avoided, if you read the experiences that folks have had doing this.

Many of these comments were years ago but I thought I would add my comment anyway. We purchased a home recently and it came with appliances. The frig was purchased in 2018. I'm not very handy with tools (always worried about breaking things) so I was hesitant to try prying the filter loose. But a small amount of pressure with a screwdriver between the back end of the filter and that plastic end holder was enough to drop the filter down. Once you get the new filter aligned it was pretty easy to turn and finish installing. The first cup of water did have a black residue but that quickly disappeared. Of course resetting the filter message using the control panel was very confusing even with the original instructions. I'll be checking the frig frequently the rest of the day to make sure I didn't accidentally turn something off! lol I really prefer the "press 2 buttons for 3 seconds" method :/ Anyway, thanks to RepairClinic, at least I found out how it was "supposed" to work! And thanks to everyone's solutions for a "stuck" filter!

After several attempts of turning the filter, we finally used channel locks gently turning the filter, out it came!

I couldnt twist the filter off, felt like I was going to break parts of the component. What helped was taking the plastic cover that drops down off its hinges, it was easy to do that, then I was able to use both hands, one to hold the blue part and the other to twist off filter. Taking the cover off helped to put the filter back on also, and putting the cover back on was easy. hope this helps.

If you have a whirlpool and can't remove the "Change filter" "remove filter" then just click "Option" and choose "filter reset" then click on "confirm despense"

How to find what filter I would need

Unable to remove filter by twisting the filter cylinder counter-clockwise. Cylinder appears to be stuck at the refrigerator connection. Would removal of the cylinder housing allow better access to connection? If so, how does one remove the housing? Whirlpool Refrigerator Model GX5FHTXVB04. THANKS

Replaced filter with no problems. Now a loud auditable noise is coming from the filter and the water comes out extremely slow.

After several failed attempts at removing the filter I pried the empty filter out using a thin flat head screwdriver/ butter knife. I pressed the screwdriver forward against the end of filter closest to you, and it popped free. I was finally able to twist the filter free. I hope this helps someone .

The filter doesn't just drop down as shown in this video. You have to take a butter knife between the refrigerator ceiling and the filter and twist the butter knife slowly. The filter will then drop down.

I just changed my filter and pressed the filter on button. But the part that says change filter light came on, blinked a couple times then stop. It's be a few hours and my fridge is still not making ice or water

Any advice on why the icemaker stopped working? The water still works. We took everything out and unplugged for 30 hrs and replaced the water filter eventhough it was fairly new. Icemaker still doesn't make ice.

I have the same model refrigerator in the video. I replaced the filter and went through the resetting steps. It beeps 3 times and nothing happens. Can anyone help me figure out what's wrong? There was water coming out before changing the filter but after I changed it no water or ice, it just beeps and nothing. I even tried putting the old filter back in and nothing happens.

Hardest filter ever to change out. The was nothing wrong with the old way the filters were. Newer is not always better. Next fridge I buy..I will make sure is doesn't have Drop filters!!!

I just read that I may have needed to shut off the cold water supply from the refrigerator and then turn on the water dispenser before replacing the filter. I didn’t do that on this first filter replacement since I’ve had the fridge, so does anyone else out there do that each time before replacing the filter? none of the videos I’ve watched including whirlpool’s suggested it.

New refrigerator, difficult to remove filter, finally removed shelf below filter and used water-pump pliers. Then had difficulty installing replacement filter, it was forcefully ejected along with some water spray. Videos make it look easy but referring to the owners manual there is a caution "Air trapped in the water system may cause water and filter to eject. Always dispense water for at least 2 minutes before removing the filter or blue bypass cap." I will make sure to dispense water prior to changing the filter the next time!
