Today me and my friend Jillian (‪@jjsaysnyc‬) went out to get dim sum in Chinatown and she totally shocked the entire restaurant (literally all the waitstaff) with her perfect Mandarin! We got all the classic Guangdong / Hong Kong style dim sum style treats, like shrimp dumplings (har gow), rice noodles, pork buns (cha siu bao), and Jillian's favorite -- chicken feet!!! This is part 2 of our Chinatown series where went around Chinatown and talked with different people in Mandarin, Cantonese, and Fuzhounese. Very funny prank and social experiment! Xiaoman, you have to “work a little on your english , ( lol 😂) lots of like, like, like, like like ! I am not being an picky here. just a lil joke with a lil bit of truth in it. It’s just constructive criticism. You are a reference on learning languages now. What you do is extremely cool and impressive, I’m a big fan. English is my second language and my teacher is always reminding me to use other words avoiding the word like for everything. Also, pointing that we become conditioned to use “like” and use it even when we don’t need it. Peace my brother ! I hope I made you laughed! HA !

Last time I was in Chinatown with my 96 year old grandmother (a few months before she died) a Chinese businessman heard her speaking Italian. He came over to the table to greet her and spoke to her for almost a half hour in perfect Italian and made her night. He said he loved Italian wine. When he returned to his table he and his associates sent over a bottle of Chinese wine for my Grandmother to try. She spoke about that night so many times in the months before she died and it always made her light up when she told the story. Idk where that man is today and I doubt he remembers her but his small gesture made her so happy and made my family so happy to witness. Learning language other than our own brings us together. 🇨🇳🇺🇸🇮🇹

before 1910, most of Italy didn't speak Italian. Everyone spoke their regional languages that were a part of a separate kingdom before Italy annexed them to become a part of Italy.

what’s so amazing is not just their command of mandarin (as far as fluent vocab goes) but damn their intonation, pitch, and even mannerisms and knowing the « right thing to say » socially…. like downplaying any compliment given. is like DAMN. RESPECT!

@@SegaSnatchers There's no "deal with the compliments", LOL. It's a social cue and ice breaker, saying something like "Not as good as yours", lends to opening the door to them further complimenting your language, and questioning where you were able to learn such a high understanding of it. That sort of thing isn't present in English, because a lot of people believe they're being mocked (With good reason, personally I wish a lot of English Speakers would be more apt to help, as opposed to mock) when being corrected on their speech.

@@SegaSnatchers decades ago in a more classy Western world, people routinely return compliments with "you are too kind" / "you flatter me". I suppose some cultures lost that and are now either dying for compliments, or just flat out complimenting themselves.

@@joshz3788I help a foreign exchanged student called something not a frog a frog. I forget what it was now but told him the name for it and pulled up a picture of a frog. I compliment on is English because the rest was perfect btw it was not an animal nor had an animal on it it was at a table where they have cheap freebies with business names on it.

omg i am literally a Chinese myself and just can't get over the fact that western people can actually speak so well in Chinese, and I know for a fact that it is legit hard for western people to speak an Asian language, the pronunciation is just so different!

It depends on the language, Polish for example has many sounds very similar to Mandarin, like x, sh, zh, ect. But for English speakers the phonology may be a huge challenge.

Not hard to *DO*, hard to *LEARN* and even harder to like unlearn what you know so you can really learn. I would imagine. I'm just now starting to try to learn another language, started with Japanese as I love the Zatoichi movies and figure I can make a goal of being able to watch those without subtitles :D

Is a way that try to sell you lots of food, then you eat finished sooner and they can get other people in faster. We hate when they did that to us, you just have to day no or will have it later. Just tell them will finished what we have first. Or food will get cold.

its pretty cool honestly. Real recognize real. If you took the time to understand and learn a complex language, it is like paying homage to their culture. Not only are they surprised and impressed, but they are truly thankful. They are a minority in a huge country. They don't expect us to care about them

Xiaoma is right, even the attempt no matter how embarassing goes a very long way with people who hardly or don't speak English. You'll notice how they light up and eager they'll be to help you or commend you for the effort. They expect you to try, don't expect them to give you the answers. But they'll definitely help you if you ask.

True - I lived in NYC for 35 years. A lot of people there do not speak any English and outside of their circles it's horrifying to communicate with anyone. So when I used to pop into the bodega with my little Arabic or my Native spanish somewhere on the street, it really breaks down walls about what's possible in interactions.

As a native English speaker in Canada I remember my first trip to Quebec. I was very embarrassed at about the age of 19 when I was asked if I understood French. I always said that I understood more than I speak of course which is the norm. One day I decided I was going to try and get over my embarrassment or nervousness. I went downtown to a nightclub in Quebec City and promised myself to only speak whatever I knew in French. Trust me it was very bad. But! When the young ladies at the nightclubs heard me trying to speak their language. I was the most attractive man in that club at the time. LOL so many came up to me and I could understand what they were saying. Things like he is so cute, he is speaking our language, etc. I don't think I had an empty date on my dance card for the rest of my stay in Quebec it was amazing. Years later I ended up in Korea. I can only say it was 1 + 1 as a better experience. My Korean wife and I have been now married for 16 years. I love what you were doing. A few words in another person's culture can make them smile, feel at home and take away their nervousness that you also had just because you took the time to reach out with a simple hello and thank you in their language. We're not so different after all.

What you said at the end really spoke to me. As an American learning Korean in VRChat, its a bit intimidating initiating conversations in Korean knowing I will likely mess up and stumble over my words, but the reactions to it are amazing. People are so supportive of you for trying to learn their language. At this point I've been learning Korean for 4 days and have had over 20 STRANGERS go out of their way to help me learn it!

At the tender age of 62, I started working for a health care company that helped to keep the elderly in their homes. Many of our clients were Mexican and Puerto Rican. I learned rudimentary Spanish, and carried an English/Spanish medical question/answer booklet with me. Every time I introduced myself in Spanish, I was received with more graciousness than I expected, often made to feel like a friend rather than the visiting nurse. If I spoke only English, the reception was often cool and suspicious. If I made a mistake in speaking Spanish, the client or family would usually laugh and then tell me the correct word or pronounciation. They appreciated the fact that I at least tried to speak Spanish. I held that position for 8 years, have been retired for 8 years now, and I miss my clients and the rapport that was established. I still use my basic Spanish when the opportunity arises. Heck, I still use what I remember of the Japanese that I learned in the early 60's when stationed in Japan.

The idea is to get you out as fast as possible to fill the table with someone else. You should take your time in ordering your plates. If you get it all at once your done in 15-20 minutes.

dude-you can never stop doing this. It’s just amazing. I don’t speak any of those languages but you could see shock and delight on the faces of every one of those people that first heard you speak. The gal you have with you seems perfect for the role as well. Seems genuine and interesting and certainly able to hang so that’s cool. It worked well. and giving that amount of money to those desperate hard working Chinese people and doing it in their own language had me grinning from ear to ear and crying at the same time. Just terrific

I get these "blown away" reactions whenever I talk to these waiters/waitresses at these restaurants as well. Only be being Chinese American myself, they're blown away at how miserable I speak the language. I experience a lot of eye rolling in my time.

This is terribly embarrassing for me to admit being a Chinese American that you two put me to shame. Two of my friends and I ate at that same restaurant last year after our bike ride around Manhattan, one is Italian American and the other is Jewish American and they wanted dim sum. So we picked this place and my friends were relying on me to know what to order and I failed miserably. They threatened to take my Chinese card away from me. LOL. Although I was born in Taiwan my family moved to the suburbs in NJ when I was 9 and we were just 1 of maybe 3 Chinese families in town so my Chinese speaking skills were falling as fast as my English skills were improving. Today I have a hard time communicating with my aunts and uncles and it is embarrassing being the only Chinese person in a "real" Chinese restaurant reading an English menu. Congratulations on your Chinese language skills and keep it up.

I’m half japanese and I understand what you mean. The problem with me though is that I don’t have japanese friends to talk to and I talk to my mom who is a Japanese only like 20% Japanese and mix it with other languages like English. I speak 2 languages fluently but the other two japanese and arabic are really poor.

@@KryptonKr Yeah, I didn't get to use my Chinese that much and you know how that goes. I have 2 brothers and we all speak English to each other. I don't recall when the transition from speaking only Chinese to only English started but the only time we got to use our Chinese was talking to my parents. Then as we got older, then moved out, and eventually my parents passed away we just don't get to use Chinese at all. My older brother still goes to a Chinese church so he's much more proficient in speaking, reading, and writing but as for me and my younger brother, we're pretty much done.

Xiaoma and Jillian displayed perfect mastery of the Chinese language as well as the Chinese culture! When the server ladies told them their Chinese was good, instead of replying with a "Thank you" (a typical response in the West), they denied it by saying "No, No, No, that's not true", which actually IS the "proper" and "modest" response to a compliment in the Chinese culture.

I will do the fortnite dance on u - I do donate to people and charities when I can. But that has nothing to do with tipping. Tipping for servers started out as being a merit-based system. If they do a great job, then they get a great tip. It was supposed to encourage them to take care of their customers. If you get a bad waitress who ignores you the whole time then leave a bad tip, etc. I didn’t say you personally were messed up. But I do think it’s messed up that there’s a community of people out there not tipping. I actually didn’t know. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I can remember reactions like this when I was a child and we used to go as a family to Chinese restaurants. My grandfather spoke fluent Mandarin, having lived in China for most of his life, and the waitresses absolutely adored him. He was a little elderly white guy wearing a cravat and a panama hat (yes, that generation - I'm in my 40s). They never suspected a thing until he started talking. We would get such great service, just like you guys!

I'm pretty sure it's the culture. I can't remember where I read it or heard it (perhaps from a Chinese person), but they like and respect humbleness. That means if someone says you're really great at something, you play it down.

Born and raised in the US. I’ve visited China 2x and the amount of random people coming up to me to try to have a conversation in English was astounding. They REALLY couldn’t resist trying theirs out on me! There’s an awesome other world around us. Also just want to say that I’ve traveled all over the world (for work). People ask me, if you could take your wife anywhere in the world, where would you take her. My response is always “China”, strictly for the difference in culture. It’s not the sites, it’s the experience.

My husband grew up in Hong Kong (went to the American school) and only learned some basics--cab directions and a few phrases--but the people at the dim sum places get really excited when we order food and ask for the bill in Cantonese. One place we went to frequently was teaching me how to say a few new phrases. It's such a great way to connect with people.

Colloquially, he's saying that he's far from being as good as a native speaker. The subtitle doesn't give the full context. Taken at face value, it's a weird (and funny) thing to say. Of course a native speaker would be better. LOL. But his comment implied that he was far from being as fluent as a native speaker. :)

That kind of response seems to be common in East Asian languages. I speak Japanese and lived in Japan on two occasions. When I told them 「私の日本語はちょっと…」("My Japanese is a little..." ) and I'd get a very similar response like「私のより上手です！」 ("It's better than mine!"), a response that might seem odd from a native speaker. It's a cultural thing to kind of shrug off or reject a compliment. If you take it, it's almost seen as rude or selfish.

I remember when I spoke Russian to a native Russian speaker for the first time and I remember them just appreciating that you've learned their language and tried to speak it to them. It's all about breaking down that wall you have built up in your mind that you can never speak to a native speaker, once you've done it once then that's a massive step forward and it motivates you to learn even more!

My mother in law gets so excited every time I say Russian words to her! She also got excited when she realized the Russian word for doll is basically the same as the Greek word for doll. (I’m half Greek and speak a bit of Greek). Language connections can be so meaningful to some people

This reminds me of a time I went to McDonald's many years ago. I'm Vietnamese, but born and raised in the US so I can't speak the language well. The cashier, who was black, saw my name on my credit card and asked if I spoke viet. I said only a little, and he bust out speaking perfect Vietnamese(way better than i spoke). He said he had a bunch of Vietnamese friends who taught him.

@@kalazakan - In China everything is looked upon as a 'product' - so why not females. From the ones I know in the West here they have told me women are looked upon as 'the producers'. - That's why they left, - you notice there are no women in the party 'Elite'.

Well, the waiter got mad because you were speaking informally to him. There is a formal and informal way of speaking Spanish and in the commercial world, unless the people are friends or on good terms, then the proper way of addressing him(or her) would have been to say “¿Hola (senior[a]), como esta?” Plus if this was in the US, nowadays it’s pretty tense ethnically and racial because of a lot of factors. So please don’t get mad at the waiter, there was probably a multitude of factors that caused his overreaction. But most Hispanics are very supportive of your linguistic endeavor, good luck and keep at it!

There goes his tip lol but seriously, I still don’t get why someone would get mad over something as innocent as that? The person is in a Mexican restaurant and if anything I think the staff might expect to hear Spanish from the customers (like the customers might expect the staff to be Spanish speaking)... ex: I’m Brazilian. if I walk into a Brazilian restaurant speaking Portuguese to a waiter, I don’t see how that would be offensive from my part. At most, the waiter would be confused if he doesn’t speak the language
