Last week congressional Republicans, led by H Morgan Griffith, revived a procedural rule from 1876 - the Holman rule - which allows any member of Congress to propose amending an appropriations bill to single out a government employee or cut a specific program. That means a federal employee’s salary could be cut to $1 and any program could be given a budget of $0. Griffith’s charge to enact the old rule came after he found out it costs $80 million to look after wild horses on federal land.
VICE News travels to the open rangeland of Nevada to document how the Bureau of Land Management deals with a large scale problem plaguing open land: wild horses. Overpopulation means that the wild horses destroy the land so Bureau of Land Management officials need to corral them into pens and care for them at a high cost to the US government. From there things get complicated - activists want to train the horses so they can be adopted; some conservationists have a more hard lined idea, suggesting the horses should be killed.

any ecosystem without predators will be unbalanced, the herbivores overrun the land without predation. By returning predators to these areas you remove the cost to government, horses can remain wild, and no life is wasted.

My friend Ore The Shepherd there aren’t any bears, wolves, or bobcats in this part of Nevada with very few mountain lions scattered here and there, also introducing any unfamiliar organism into an environment is potentially dangerous and harmful to the ecosystem, thus we shouldn’t release predators. The only logical solution is to euthanize the horses to reduce damage done to the lands. Just a reminder, we wouldn’t kill all of the horses just regulate the population

@@bad_bass_trout6625 Preditors used to be widespread across the precolonial US, Nevada included, so I wouldn't call them unfamiliar organisms. Yellowstone was without its wolf population for over almost 100 years but its introduction was successful in dealing with the elk overpopulation.

I love horses but let's look at the facts: there are too many horses in the wild, it costs millions of dollars to sterilize them, and that would need to be done yearly. Let me give another point of view to this documentary. I live right where this was filmed in Reno. The other problem this story doesn’t show is how many horses are dying from being hit by cars and starvation. If you get a chance, look up USA parkway and how horses are killed by cars and trucks on a daily basis and how those horses kill people in cars and motorcycles. The horses are also eating so much of the vegetation in some areas that they are starving and many look very unhealthy. I personally have almost hit them on multiple occasions. They are not wild, they will walk right up to you and they have no fear of vehicles. They are like the Canadian geese of large mammals. My solution is open up season on them or sell the horses to a country like Canada who can harvest the meat. Coming from someone who actually lives in wild horse country, I know the burden they create.

If we hadnt of over hunted cougars and wolves, which were once the only enemies of wild horses, the population would be at least somewhat controlled by the natural predators of these animals . But because of the over hunting and threat that those same predators pose to cows and sheep, there is no longer that safety net to control horse population.

Horses _were_ part of the North American ecosystem but they died out about 11 thousand years ago. Meanwhile they flourished in the rest of the world. Since then the ecosystem had obviously changed and apparently they don't quite fit in anymore. You could say that it's the same situation with cats in Australia. However cats were _never_ native to the island. I think just killing horses off might be a bit drastic. I think they could blend in with the ecosystem but it'll obviously take some time, so birth control would be the best course of action in my opinion.
@phillipyoung6573
@phillipyoung6573 7 жыл бұрын
Evolutionary speaking if they truly died out when the elk, buffalo etc did than they were gone only for 22 hours out of a year equivalent. Not enough time for the ecology/ecosystem to change except in the introduction of nonnative plants by man...such as cheat grass. America really needs to say we are tired of false population accounts. We have 100,000 elk in the same areas as the 20,000 (realistic estimate) horse/burro and over several million cattle. These areas are just a small fraction public lands.

A Leonard When you castrate a stallion you change his attitude, he is more gentle and will be less protective of his herd. The lead mare would probably force him away from the herd so she could find another dominate stallion. The best solution is dart mares with birth control. Instead of hiring helicopters to round up horses and men/women on the ground to herd them into pens and trucks put these same people to work darting the animals.

I have always wanted to try horse meat. It's hard to convince people to do away with their cultural icons. Mustangs represent freedom, stubborness, and an individual connection to the land that is captured so fondly in American nostalgia. For some people, eliminating these animals is the same as eliminating those ideals, and acknowledging that they are unreasonable standards to live by, even though a cull is probably better for the entire ecosystem.

Unfortunately, the wild horse issue will probably go on for quite some time due to the close, emotional, and anthropomorphic attitudes we have given these creatures. Many horses have also been abandoned or sold internationally. People don't want the horse slaughterhouses to continue in the U.S. to the effect that they are now being sent to countries with no understanding of how to humanely and safely handle these animals before being processed.

I understand it's difficult, we feel a lot of empathy with horses, but killing them is probably the best realistic option. I live in Connecticut and we've had a white-tail deer problem in my area for a long time that is controlled with a hunting season. People just don't care as much about deer and are okay with it. Arguably, horses are just big deer we like more because they're less ugly and can ride. Btw, I'm not a hunter.

Can they just bring in wolves, cougars or any large predators to control the population? The reason there are so many of them is due to the lack of predators to hunt them. If there are little to no predators, it will lead animals to over populate. When wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone it had a positive affect on the ecosystem, controlling the population of elk and deer.

Why don't you export them to countries which depend on livestock and have pastures to feed these horses...India has great demand for horses....similarly it in the case of Nepal, Bhutan.... Send the 4-6 months old to other poor countries reach in vegetation for their use..... Having open areas for these horses to feed, we humans have created political boundaries animals don't know....

leon jacobs the expense of a horse is way more than a car.... hay is about $100 a big round bale straw is about $25-50 a big round bale. A bag of feed is $12 a shed to house the animal is at least $800( for a cheap one) vet bills can cost thousands training will set you back at least a grand and a full set of tack brushes and general maintenance ( farrier, fly spray, upkeep on tack and other equipment) will probably set you back another grand now a horse eats about 25lbs of hay a day and a big round bale is about 1100lbs so you do the math but as a person who has three horses I can tell you, you need to either be able to grow your own hay and have the equipment to bale and move it( you can add thousands more dollars for that) you are gonna spent way more money on a horse an a cheap $800 car

Horses are NOT an invasive species. Before you make an off the cuff comment like that, go do some of your very own research and then make a rational decision about this issue. You’ll be very surprised by what you find. The first place to look, the BLM LOBBYISTS who are paid over 80 million dollars a year by the cattle ranches to get the mustang lands for their cattle.

TNR them. Like with what is done with feral cats. There will always be wild horses, but there'd be far less population growth if the horses we have now were permanently sterilized.

A study shows a foal in the wild has a 50% chance of surviving one year in todays world. Born during the winter, snakes, ticks, sickly, injury etc. Natural selection for all wildlife seems cruel but to be stuck in a holding pin with people fighting over kill or not to kill is better and free. Check out Cloud the Stallion a slow but informative doc. Many of his offspring and others were lost to cougars. Once again the overpopulation is only propaganda so any control other than a occasional bait trap adoption is not necessary.

Ronald Franco Vega II couple of problems; these are wild horses, not broken to bit, bridle, saddle or harness. Second, transportation of horses is very expensive. Third, introducing these non-native horses would require long periods of quarantine which is also expensive. I love animals as much as the next person but like deer, coyote, and wild hogs, when a population grows unchecked by the ecosystem we do need to intervene with culling. Otherwise the population as a whole suffers preventable disease and watching animals starve to death b/c of lack of food is torture. Quality of life is just as important as life itself. I personally have watched deer starve to death during hard winters and it isn't pleasant. I would much rather have a hunter cull the herd on my property and feed their family that watch and animal die if starvation, which imho is the same as torture.
