WHITE TEA PICKING STYLES - What is White Peony King?

White Peony King aka Bai Mu Dan Wang is a fine picked Bai Mu Dan. Producers will argue about whether White Peony King has to be made from the first pluck of the year or whether it can be a name used to denote any finer picked Bai Mu Dan from the early Spring harvests.
The style of picking for a King Peony should be very bud heavy with one to two leaves. I prefer two leaves to add more weight and strength to the tea but this is a personal preference.

A it was about time we got an update vid on white tea. I don't know why but I've always found that new tea lovers go for something like a silver needle because it looks fansy, get disappointed, turn away from white tea until much later when they try a mu dan and get overwhelmed by how amazing white tea can be. To be honest I don't buy a lot of needle whites anymore. Every time I get some, I think ooo this is a nice one until I drink my next mu dan. Well I think it's going on the list. That new one sounds like a fun little cup of tea.

Agreed. Silver needle is too light. You really need the leaf to get the most from the plant

I also vastly prefer White Peony. I still enjoy a Silver Needle if I'm in the right mood but my Silver Needle lasts me months, while my White Peony is often gone after just a few days. I still have to taste a Shou Mei.

I have a Bai Mu Dan with aroma similar to peony flowers. Not exactly, but close enough, in my view. And generally it's lighter, doesn't have nut and dessert aromas, just flowers and a bit of hay. I kinda of like it this way even though it's a cheaper, low-grade option.

Just wanted to say that i absolutely love your tea tins! I ordered a couple of them and i really like the design and the functionality is just excellent! I bought tea tins before which were at least 3 times more expensive and were not that well thought of at all. Also, peony chirps is an excellent tea - i only have tried a couple of silver needles in the last couple of years and i always thought of them as having almost no taste at all - peony chirps really reconciled me with white teas!

Your 2020 Bai Mu Dan is just stellar : it redefined my appreciation of this picking for white tea. Such a great balance between the fresh light floral notes and the deeper rounder « play-doh » kind of flavors that sustain the whole thing. Great selection !

I almost ordered the King Peony last night when I made my Black Friday order, but I've currently got an almost brand new cake of Peony Chirps and I thought one peony white tea was enough for now.

I commented this on a previous video but this seems to be more suitable for this one! Thank you very much for all of your hard work! I very much enjoy your videos and have bought tea from you a few times now. I am wondering if perhaps there is a mistake on the brewing temperature recommendation for king white peony. The suggestions says to brew at 3 degrees Celsius. Is that correct? Thank you very much again for your wonderful work!

My first foray into the white tea world was a 'Yin Zhen', though the buds were quite large, and stale. I suspect they were a prior years picking, as it seemed more oxidized than it should have been. My second Yin Zhen was much much pleasing, being the current years pickings, and they were much smaller buds. My latest foray into White Tea is a '2012 Aged Bai Mu Dan', and I can tell you that it is a powerhouse of a tea that REALLY gets you "Lifted" if I may use that term. A gate way to instant Tea Drunkenness. I'd had that happen to a lesser extent with the Yin Zhens, but nothing beats a good aged White Tea in that category. I'm not sure what it is about the aging process that does it, but it is absolutely fantastic.

White tea ages well, so if yours tasted stale it was more likely due to improper storage rather than the fact it was of a previous year’s picking

My little local tea shop up in Finland sells "Bai Mu Dan" but it's got to be Shou Mei in comparison, here. What's the likely explanation? Are they dealing with a tricky producer, haha?
@MeiLeaf

Bai Mu Dan can have many appearances from extremely bud heavy to being more leaves with some buds. There is no exact definition of when a Shou Mei becomes a Bai Mu Dan and often times producers will tend to 'upgrade' their product to Bai Mu Dan.

youll feel it if too much tea or too much of a certain tea arent agreeing with you. shakiness, weird stomach feeling,... maybe dont drink ONLY tea. simple water is necessary as well. other than that, go wild

Thank you so much for the education. I prefer the Darjeeling white teas which are more about the processing rather than the picking
