There are a few things that I really love about your videos. There"s no talk or boring music, your no nonsense style and the magnificent results. For a beginning woodcarver like me, your work is very inspiring.

Thank you Rob. I cut myself dozens of times in the early days of carving. I would recommend anyone to wear a glove.

For some reason, I stopped being notified of your new videos. Now, I have a few to catch up on. This one is amazing. And very helpful. This can be practiced and a screw up will not result in hours of wasted work. Toss and begin again. Thank you, Kevin.

I just watched this video for the second time and I like that you showed the finished carving in the beginning of the video. It gives us an idea of where you are going as you cut away the wood. Thanks for another great lesson.

Kevin I just continue to be blown away by your talent. I know that I’ve started too late in life to achieve this level of expertise. At 62 all that I can do is just be patient and keep practicing. I am curious if you have any formal training or is this the result of natural talent and much practice. If it’s the latter, maybe there’s hope for me yet.
@KevinCoates98

Thanks Bruce, it’s never too late. I had no formal training or do I have any natural talent. I just carve and carve. Then I carve some more. Pretty much all day everyday.

Nice one. It would be really cool to hear a few key thoughts you have along the way as you carve these things. Was this just straight up improvising? Did you follow a pattern? What decisions did you make along the way that lead to the character, etc, etc. I guess I just love learning what the brain is doing while the hands are working.

Thanks. Sorry but I’m not big on talk. Maybe I should add some music to my videos. Before I start a carving I usually have a mental picture of what it will kinda look like. I rarely if ever use patterns.

Thanks for the reply! It's all good, not everyone likes to talk on camera. I think I just really enjoy getting into the thought process of creatives. I'd say don't add music to the videos, though, because we all like hearing the carving ASMR sounds.

Thank you. If you’re talking about the knife I used in my latest video, it’s a fish knife. I cut a couple inches off the tip.

Just curious, do you ever cut off a hunk of wood and think, whoops, that was too much? I think that every time I watch you slice a piece off especially of the side of the face. Always seems to look perfect when you are finished, though, so the answer is probably no. Love watching your videos.
@KevinCoates98
@KevinCoates98 6 жыл бұрын
Not that much anymore but you always need to be aware of it. First when I started carving it would happen on occasion but you get use to how much wood you’re cutting with time. Thanks

nice video Kevin- do u think it could be done on a branch of similar size- so many of those around at this time of the year -if so can u show us one please
@KevinCoates98
@KevinCoates98 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. You can do it from a branch if it was some decent wood. That’s the problem here where I live. I live right next to the ocean and the winds we sometimes get coming off the North Atlantic doesn’t do much for the growth of trees. There’s very little if anything here suitable for carving. The wood I use for carving is imported. In the meantime if I do come across a branch that’s suitable I will give it a go
@hem3375
@hem3375 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Kevin, you are very kind. With branches I find the roundness a bit tedious and the knife tends to slip- hence asked for ur expert advice. As u mention I try and carve using them but I I do not know the type of wood underneath the bark if its decent or not. Your prompt reply is much appreciated

Outstanding video Kevin, your best one yet. The detail in the face is more a portrait than caricature. Did you do the 1/4 turn on the head on purpose or a lucky happenstance? Haha. Again, great job.
