In this video we're comparing Mungo Jerry and The Mixtures, and their renditions of In The Summertime. We've always loved this song, though we never checked out any of Mungo Jerry's other works. And we're excited to hear an alternative version of this song. Not to mention that we've never heard of The Mixtures until we got this request. Please let us know who you think did it better. Enjoy!

Lookup on Wikipedia '1970 Radio Ban'. This was a major dispute between Australian radio stations and overseas record labels over play for pay royalties. The result was that the record labels refused to allow promo singles to be released in Australia and the Australian radio stations refused to play the songs that were released to them. The Mungo Jerry song was caught up in this so the Mixtures covered it and subsequently had a massive hit locally. Several Australian artists in that period had major hits from songs that were not played on mainstream radio.

Didnt hear the Mungo Jerry version until a lot later, we got the Mixtures version here because of the radio ban. My older siblings played it a lot on their little mono portable record player, I was only about 5 years old.

The Mixtures was an Australian band. Both versions were recorded at around the same time. The Mungo Jerry version didn't get much radio play in Australia (because of the radio ban of some overseas labels in 1970), so The Mixtures version became a big hit in Australia in the summer of 1970/71.

Mungo Jerry but I liked the Mixtures version also. I met one of the Mixtures many years after this. He was working as the maintenance manager at a large hotel in Parramatta. He introduced himself as one of the mixtures, I think it was Terry, I didn't remember them, but when he mentioned the Push Bike song, I remembered them then. He said that they got their start because the foreign record companies wanted too much money when the songs were played on Australian radio and that left a gap where they could do 'covers' and release them here to no 'competition'. I've been waiting 30 years to tell this story. 😁😁

The Idle Race did a cover of "In the Summertime" in 1971, the most famous member of the Idle Race was Jeff Lynne from 1966 until 1970. Even without Jeff Lynne, the Idle Race did a creditable cover of the song. In 1972, The Idle Race changed their name to the Steve Gibbons Band.

I remember The Mixtures going as far back as 1965. They were one out of many mid 60's Australian pop bands that lurked under the shadows of giants like The Easybeats and Billy Thorpe And The Aztecs. They would do TV shows like Kommotion and The Go! Show and release little known singles. Speaking of which, Ian ''Molly'' Meldrum would do regular appearances on these shows many years before he hosted Countdown. As others have mentioned, there was a radio ban in Australia and The Mixtures took advantage of this - In The Summertime being the result. I enjoyed the song, but even then I felt Mungo Jerry's recording was better. Mungo Jerry weren't strangers to Australia. We got to hear their other hits and see Ray Dorset's big grin on our magazines. I think I'm safe to say that Mungo Jerry's version has surpassed The Mixtures' version in Australia. It most likely gets more play on radio and appears on more 70's compilation albums than The Mixtures' version. The Mixtures did much better with their own song called ''The Pushbike Song'', which might have been inspired by ''In The Summertime'', but is a great song in its own right.

It's great to see you back, Chris and Cynthia. 😊 The Mixtures were an Australian band, their biggest hit was "The Push Bike Song" which is well worth reacting to, Mungo Jerry later covered it as a matter of fact, the funniest cover was by 'Pinky and Perky' two pig marionettes from a '60s and early '70s Children's TV series. For me it's always Mungo Jerry for this one.

The original Mungo Jerry track, with the line "have a drink, have a drive" was used in a fairly graphic UK advert in the 90s, warning of the dangers of drink driving. There is also at least one other version of this song, by an artist named Frank Sidebottom. Not quite the same lyrics, but interesting nonetheless...

It's wonderful to see you two back in action. I trust you're settling in to the new home just fine? Do let us know the pro's and con's of the move.. Always interested to know how you guys are coping. Often I agree with the notion that nostalgia playing a part in somebody's choice of version, but in this case, I think Mungo Jerry's original has more personality and oomph. The Mixtures' version could be an advertising jingle for all I care. That said, I loved The Mixtures and their big hit ''The Pushbike Song''. I especially loved watching the original film-clip, which was shot in Melbourne and has a lot of familiar scenes, including a street parade that Gillian and I attended when we were tiny. The camera didn't catch us, but the parade is in the original video. The Mixtures would leave Melbourne for England after ''The Pushbike Song'' became a big hit over there. Love to see that on your channel sometime. Cheers, Hayley

I remember The Mixtures version dominating Australian radio, which frustrated me because I hated most of the music released by Fable Records, including this one. Fable was quick to get third division Australian bands like Autumn, Jigsaw (not the band that did ''Skyhigh''), Love Story; et al., to record shonky versions of great UK and US pop songs. I'm pretty sure Sherbet began their recording career under those conditions. Not a great time in Australian pop history, but it did start the ball rolling a little faster for local talent.

Although a decent copy, the Mixtures' version can't compete with the still vibrant memory of getting off work delivering pizzas in the summer of '70 and driving down to the West End in my trusty Austin Cambridge to see my girlfriend and singing along with Mungo Jerry's "In the Summertime" on the car radio..

Good to see you back! You should have done Gary Glitter's ''Hello Hello I'm Back Again'' as the first song.. But then again, he likes little boys, so maybe best not to. What a rip off. Our illustrious radio stations decided to blacklist UK records due to some ''pay to play'' dispute, and instead spun watered-down versions of the latest UK hits recorded by local duds. I had The Mixtures' version as a kid, but when I eventually got to hear Mungo's version, I threw my copy of The Mixtures' record in the bin. The Mixtures can be redeemed with their own composed ''The Pushbike Song''.

During the 60’s because of the vast distance to come to Aust. Record companies would release the song down under to local bands to make some more money. Many early Aussie bands got a start that way, including Johnny Farnham.

From my memory it wasn't an issue with distance and foreign records not reaching Australia. The 1970 Radio Ban was the catalyst of Aussie bands recording versions of overseas hits; thus, being radio's preference.

Welcome back, Haniers.. Your dreams were your ticket out! 🎶 You guys might like to do a ''Who Did It Better'' based on the 1970 Radio Ban that was going on in Australia in the early 70's. It was just a stupid industry dispute, as eloquently described by *myeuphonyzone3958.* A lot of local recording artists benefited from doing covers of overseas songs that weren't being played by our radio stations. The results were mixed, more often the local versions were inferior to the originals. Mungo Jerry beats The Mixtures. I asked a while ago if you two remember a TV commercial for Brut 33 in the 80's. A company I worked for in Melbourne made a local ad for Brut 33 which involved Adam, Eve, Napoleon, Joséphine, Robin and Marian. We (cast and crew) had a great time on a cold and miserable Melbourne winter in 1982, and were lucky that we even got to complete the shoot on time. Anyway, the ad got a bit of international distribution because Faberge Inc wanted to try a jovial approach to their advertising. What can be more jovial than an Aussie ad? I am interested to know if you remember this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z9p5aLmmzq3Yj30.html
