Well done. I'm a rehab RN(56yr) (was) and now care for my mom(85yr) 24/7, with the assistance of my son(18yr). I promised that we would care for her as long as possible because she deserves our help. Most (70%?) of the long term care patients did not receive family/friend visitors. Everyone is still learning, giving and should be valued.

Always remember; We are twice the parent, and twice the child.

One of the best TEDx talks I have ever had the pleasure to see and hear. One of seven girls, spread across several US states, we promised never to put our parents in a nursing home or let them die alone in a hospital. We kept that promise, although for some I know that could be difficult or close to impossible. They both died at home, even with some of their grandchildren helping with care. But, I am truly grateful we were able to work it out. We all didn't always agree on things but we made it work. Our parents were not perfect but I am glad we were raised with compassion and love which I passed on to my only son. I have already loss my husband, I only hope my son will help care for me remembering how he cared for my father and mother. A fine lecture, thank you.

"Not everything is Kumbaya at our place at times, believe me." On the cusp of 70, and with little wheels falling of hither and thither, concern about an unknown future is never far away. This is an excellent presentation that, with a sprinkling of levity and a dash of the personal, makes the subject and inevitability of matters intrinsic to agism proximate and accessible for us all. It covers a great deal of territory for its 18 minutes length and helps us realise and/ or discover how difficult and challenging the aging process is or can be for parents and their children. While it isn't always possible or tenable even, if people are able to rub along together or circumstances are malleable enough, the pleasures amidst the tough times will reward with moments of joy that benefits the elderly person/s and their families all round. Well done Dr Miller... 🤗

Thank you. Such a profound message. I have so many things I would like to write. To express my gratitude for this presentation. A list too long to write. What I will say is “thank you. I feel heard”. I have chronic illness. And though I’m young in age. I’m in wheelchair and dependent on others for most of my care. And I often feel that though I am young I have overstayed my welcome taking up space and time and resources and energy. Thank you for verbalizing the plight of the elderly. And inadvertently the plight of the sick and disabled.

Andrew I am so proud of you - and for having the opportunity to work with you to craft and deliver this talk. Congratulations, I hope millions of people watch this talk and embrace your idea, because it’s worth spreading! 🙂

Very good points Dr. Andrew and yes, we have a lot to learn from other cultures when it comes to treating our elderly. I also think that some of these conversations between parents and children about care preferences should happen earlier in life before some issues arise. Every person has a right to dignity, regardless of their age. When we choose the humane approach, it is so much easier to come up with new solutions. Let us not forget that every person we meet is someone else's parent or child, sister or brother. Thank you so much for sharing about your family situation, it exemplifies what many of us have to consider when making these very important decisions. I think family doctors should also help with starting these conversations because doctors may be able to influence their patients to some degree. Also a great use of sense of humor in your presentation.

My children will not look after me. I don’t want them to. I’m 44. I hope to live to double this and more. But I am not raising my kids to have a good life only to steam roll it later on. We all have to make our own way as couples. Children must always be given the number one gift. Their own life.
