Our patience is running thin with Caravan & Motorhome Club sites especially when there are so many amazing private sites with their own individuality, uniqueness and warm welcomes.
Bircham Mill ticks the boxes for us, so please come an join us for a look around another quirky site.
Plus Dave has a rant (can you guess what about?).
We also do the draw and announce the winner of the Caravantastic merch.
We hope you enjoy this video and if you haven't done yet then please subscribe to our channel it's FREE.
Happy travels,
Helen & Dave

Hi Dave and Helen, we have been members for 20 years and have also experienced rude and officious wardens, I made a complaint to the club and was not satisfied with the response. We have also found some wardens to be helpful, pleasant, and welcoming. We keep our membership for the use of CL's, many are brilliant and value for money. Happy travels 😊

Hi Dave and Helen. Apologies for not clicking like button for the last video as my wife and I are halfway through a seasonal pitch at Yellowcraigs North Berwick just outside Edinburgh where we come from . We are home for a short while then back down again. For the last four weeks. If you know Yellowcraigs then you’ll know what you get there. But we understand what you mean about prices. The club prices have been steadily rising and now becoming unaffordable.we are about to join the other club and use more commercial sites ourselves. Well done for bringing this issue up.

Good morning, thanks very much for watching and leaving your comment, really appreciated. We seem to be on the same page ref: pricing which we feel in general are not reflected in terms of facilities on site. We do like the fact that most CAMC sites have barriers for added security but outside of that we just find many of the private sites and CL’s have more going for them. We hope you enjoy your last 4 weeks at Yellowcraigs. Helen is from the Edinburgh area so we get there quite often. ATB, Dave & Helen 👍

I agree that some of the wardens need to go to 'charm school' and remember just who is paying their salary. Jobsworth springs to mind sometimes, not always, but when it does, it irritates.

Hi Dave & Helen, I totally agree with your sentiments. The CAMC have lost sight of their remit to their members. We now use private sites almost exclusively and only remain members because of the CLs. You are lucky to have a great choice of private sites in East Anglia.

Thanks Richard, it’s a sad reality but I think a lot of members are at the same square as you. There are some fab private sites and CL’s and if we do renew next year it will be for the same reasons as you. Thanks for your valued comment. ATB, Dave & Helen 👍

Bit surprised at your impression of cmc sites Dave. I've never found them expensive really.. You obviously have done at £65 night. Goodness me even dearer than pinewoods. Although the site you're on to me was very expensive for what it is. £42 night wow. But what you do is very useful to us all. I find them very informative & go on many of sites you've been on after watching your vids. Keep up the good work

Hi David, hope you’re well and as always many thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. Actually, this Bircham Mill site is a little over priced we think and the pitches/grounds could have been tidier. However, the food from the on-site cafe is excellent and freshly baked bread from the sites own windmill make it quite unique. As for CAMC site fees, I think they vary so much from site to site and dependant upon pitch type. We’ve found many of them really do require an upgrade to justify some of the fees they charge. I must say though, regardless, the facilities are always clean, warm and have plenty of hot water. Take care, Helen & Dave 👍

Hi Helen & Dave, we have now been club members for over twenty years. At one point we would always use club sites, however last couple of years we have started using more and more private sites. Generally we are finding them better value for money and as you said we enjoy the variety of independent sites. Generally we have been lucky with wardens though. Another great video by the way.

We are in both clubs, one is up for renewal this month. Honestly, it's a neverending point of discussion whether to renew or not. I like the "network" and how easy it makes planning long trips and you generally know exactly what you're getting in terms of pitch size and facilities. But what we have to pay per night as members is honestly insulting. There is no discount and in nearly every case works out more expensive than an independent site. My two favourite sites are both independents so perhaps that's telling. The clubs, both of them. really need to up their game in offering restaurants, cafes, bars and pools. If you're charging top rate then these should be a given not non existent. Bircham Mill has exactly the type of quirky charm that is utterly lacking in the club sites.

Love tis latest Vlog. Agree with your vievs on the CMC club of late. We are off to the CCC site at West Runton next week, 5 nights are costing us £122 (with over 60s discount) Immediately adjacent is the CMC Incleborough Fields site. Rather more costly ! We joined CCC earlier this year, and their memnber's mag is much more intersting too.

🇺🇦 Hi Dave and Helen. Site looks lovely. Hey the breakfast Dave very nice. With Helen and the t towel. That price you'd want a job lot. Bit to expensive for us, I'd at least want service pitch for that price. Great site though. Dave with you a 100% on the CAMC the one and only reason still with them is for the cls. Don't think I would have been as layed back as you, anyone who speaks down to me is like a red rag to a bull. Hope you reported him. Lot of the wardens are lovey, its just the few that spoil it. Hello there Dave & Helen, Certainly is a quirky site, we’d have climbed to the top of the windmill too. You’ll have to climb a mountain with us one day 😂. Great looking breakfast, lucky to get one in the afternoon. As you know our check in at Seacroft wiped the smile from our faces. We were given orders not instructions, not nice. Certainly not a pleasant experience for you either. It’s not what you say it’s how you say it. On a lighter note back to the windmill and Gail thought of Jonathan Creek and my mind went straight back to Camberwick Green’s Windy Miller 🤣. All the best, Rob & Gail 😀

I’m with you, Caravan and Motorhome sites are now very expensive and can be overcrowded. We recently spent three weeks at a small site in Cornwall fully serviced £25 per night, fantastic views huge spaces between pitches. On the way home we stopped at Tewkesbury lovely location but totally hemmed in and very expensive. The contrast was stark and consequently we have just planned a seven site tour next year using only one Caravan and Motorhome site. They are pricing themselves out of the market. Also totally agree that Wardens can make or break your experience. The majority are fantastic but unfortunately some have no interpersonal skills and are on transmit and not receive. How an earth they pass the recruitment process beggars belief.

Hey Dave My view as a new first time member is that actually the site wardens work for the members. Without members they will have no job. Politeness costs nothing. You are probably much more patient and calm than I would have been. Simple really - you parked between the pegs that they control. Their fault. I’ve done my first ever club visit to Troutbeck head in Cumbria. Mad rain! 60 mph winds!! Sideways on too!!! Only the second site I have EVER stayed at (and only owned our first van for 7 weeks) and the site and the team were awesome. And we both loved it. We will go back even with rain lol. I think the club seems to be too commercial and a little out of touch; and yes running it as a business drives behaviours. Not great ones at that I think. Bentley car of the year? Dream on. Hi Helen & Dave, Avid followers of your Vlogs, I have to say that our interaction with Wardens has been pretty positive, although we stay at fewer Club sites, mainly due to the uniformity of tight pitches, but we are mainly members for the CL's, we have stayed at some great little sites although one or two have let themselves down with poor housekeeping for what seems increasing pitch rates, but overall we have come across some little gems. Your comments about the way you were spoken to really hits home, civility and courtesy costs nothing, obviously what started out a quite trivial matter was blown out of proportion simply down to the wardens attitude. Keep up the Vlogs always find them interesting and entertaining, and agree about the Ghost Ship. Also try out Belaugh Country Park, on your home patch, you will get a warm welcome at this lovely family run site.

Lionel Jeffries played Grandpa Potts , and your absolutely right it does look like the Potts place in the film. Incidentally not the first Chitty Chitty Bang Bang reference for us , we've bee in Bavaria at the Castle that featured as the home of Baron Bomburst. I recognise the Mill, we biked to it quite a few years ago before we lived in Norfolk and called in , we had completely forgotten about it until your video brought it all back. Still looks like a really authentic place to stay. I had a similar unpleasant experience with a warden in York at the CMC Site, we were pitched by one warden and the next day told to move by another, even though we were only staying one night, go figure. You're totally correct, the wardens do set the tone but over all I we have had good service but your experience does happen too often and it's a concern I have regularly heard. I think the big sites need a culture change, the wardens deal with disputes poorly and need better training. Thanks for a very interesting and insightful watch. Best wishes Helen and Martin

Hello H&M, that's the one! loved that film and we hope you're enjoying your latest European tour. You're not a millionaire miles from Bircham, it's on the no thrills side of camping but we think it's still worth the pitch price. The food in the cafe is really, really good and the smell of fresh bread wafting across is mouth watering. We nipped to Wells (obviously) for fish & chips and a pint at Burnham Market. We think some investment in customer service training is required, it's evident that a lot of others have had some poor experiences and at the end of the day these teams are front of house and the face of the club. They have the ability to make the difference. Shame! Safe travels, catch you again soon. ATB, Dave & Helen.

Overall, we are happy with the sites. One thing you did touch on we need the time to prepare your pitch for arrival, we have yet to see a site where any prep is done, the vans leave and the next ones turn up. The only time any work seems to be done is when you're in the van about 9, 10 o clock, we have even had wind break moved and not put back 😮. Maybe it is time for shake up in the club 🤔. Hi Jackie, you’re right it was disgraceful but I am pleased to say that the vast majority of site wardens are absolutely wonderful but as in most walks of life you always get one! Thanks for the video, imagine the maintenance for the windmill. We met up with family at Glastonbury who were staying nearby on Wednesday, after lunch my husband joined them to climb the Tor in the wind of Agnes! My sister in law nearly got blown off her feet. They agreed that it was ticked off the bucket list, never need to do that again 😂. I think that the difference between club sites and private is that the owners have a vested interest in welcoming us and keeping us happy. Site wardens sometimes take the warden title a bit too seriously. I love the clean facilities but find the sites can be too regimented. I do like the CLs though.

Hi Dave and Helen. We visited Bircham Windmill a few years ago when we were staying at another caravan site. Definitely quirky and we were lucky enough to see it working and grinding the flour. Like you I don't like heights but husband went to the top. It looks like you were off grid on the site? On the other subject of CAMC we didn't renew our membership in January due to the abysmal website and the huge increases in site fees. I can honestly say we haven't regretted it and have found some wonderful private sites with great facilities and cheaper prices e.g we have just come back from a lovely peaceful site a few miles from Scarborough with a huge pitch, fully serviced for £34 a night. And no jobsworth wardens . I fear that CAMAC is losing members hand over fist and worry for it's survival in the future. Very sad state of affairs. Enjoy your next trip 😊

Hi Pat, interesting comment, thanks for sharing. I think the new booking system was the start of their recent problems, closely followed by the hike in prices. Wardens come and go and most are very good but they have a very important front of house role to fulfil and need to remember that without members, there is no club! We were on EHU at Bircham, really enjoyed it there, grass needed a tidy up though and it wasn't especially cheap. Cafe was amazing!. Cheers, Dave & Helen.

Great update video and what a cracking site. Some wardens are jobs worth for sure but I really do feel that they are few and far between. Newly back into caravaning, but had Fab wardens at a recent Pandy CCS who were lovely. But agree in the past there have been issues I’ve experienced, some do it for the pay and others do it for the love of caravaning world. Off tomorrow to the Cirencester Park CCS so hopefully they will be nice like they were 11years ago. Great video update both, really enjoy watching your videos 😀😀

Hi Helen, and Dave, great Vlog. I must agree with you that club sites are not what they was. I’ve been a member for 31 years now and in the early days the wardens are welcoming and kind, but in the last few years it is changed dramatically seven years ago, I visited Edinburgh club site was very good been there this year and I can’t believe how bad it was and they was not clean. I took several pictures and will be forwarding to the club yes you’re right there are some fantastic wardens, very welcoming but something is drastically wrong, and like you said, they forget that this is our club and they are employed by us I think that if you pitched caravan in between the white pegs then you are not at fault, the warden is at fault for not preparing the pitch it is his job to do this maybe the club should be getting him back to do some proper training😮 but let’s not let these people cloud our judgement caravanning is a great past time, and if we feel this way vote with your feet gary and karen

Great video guys, love the mill. Agree with the issue about wardens. It’s not necessarily what you do but how you do it. Make a complaint, if you don’t tell them they won’t know! Last year we went to a “favourite” site, many, many times which was fantastic. Brilliant wardens. This year totally different and a complete let down. Tried three times (to see if it was a one off and unfortunately it wasn’t). Need to look at more private sites, love some of the ones you’ve shown as but with three children the adult only ones are off the list.

Great video as always Dave & Helen. Sounds like that campsite at Yarmouth is run by the Waffen-SS. We are a young family and now at the end of our first year of caravanning. When we first started, we joined the Caravan and Motorhome club as that was 'the thing to do' when you start out, however since joining, we have not stayed at a single site. The main reasons being, the private sites are nearly always much nicer in appearance, with much better facilities and the site fees are often much cheaper. The discount on site fees and other perks from CAMC membership see either negligible or non existent. We have watched many videos of yours or other caravan KZfaqrs of CAMC sites and not once did we think to ourselves, wow that looks amazing. So far, our favourite site has been Old Brick Kilns in Norfolk, they have set that standard to which we measure other sites against. Your latest video, just gives us another reason not to renew our membership this year. Oh another thing that we dont like, is their awful website and mobile app, its complete rubbish. Their monthly magazine also goes straight into the bin on arrival as its complete rubbish. What a waste of £60 a year.... We would rather support the private independent sites than club sites in the future.

Hello Dave and Helen, love the channel and your part of the world! We completely agree with your sentiments regarding the CMHC. We have noticed very much the same, lack of investment at some sites and not always the best customer relations. Some Wardens have a view that they are doing us a favour “allowing” us to stay on site, when actually we are ultimately paying their wages. Generally, the fees have increased significantly over the years whereas the service and sites have become quite poor. For the past two years, like you we have used private sites with far better facilities and staff who seem to really want to welcome us and make our stay as enjoyable as possible. We too are seriously considering our future subscription to the CMHC. Paul and Steve. Yorkshire.

Hi Dave and Helen, hope you're both well. Regarding CAMC club sites. We've stayed on loads of different ones this year and have always received a good welcome, I do agree the prices are way too high compared to CLs and private sites. They are also very generic and regimented, but at least you always know what to expect and they're clean and tidy. The problem is supply and demand because despite the high prices the sites are always full especially at weekends. So while people continue to pay the prices they aren't ever going down. Hope you enjoy the rest of your trip and your drive gets sorted. 😊

Thanks Mark, driveway finished just need to stay off it for a couple of weeks so we will just keep on touring. lol We generally get a good welcome to be fair but this was very annoying and completely uncalled for. It's not what was said but more how it was said. You're right about supply and demand, we haven't stayed on too many club sites this year but we have noticed we are getting lots of money off e-mails, last minute offers etc so perhaps the club are noticing a difference in occupancy rates on certain sites, maybe those that are a little tired and need some investment. We renew next July so we hope the club do enough to convince us to renew between now and then. Cheers, Dave & Helen.

I just checked my membership card to see that I have been a member since 1986. My warden experiences are mainly negative over that time . The warden job title does not help. I went to the AGM last year to express my views on the web site fiasco. A question was asked about matching the Camping and Caravan Club site reduced fees for pensioners . This suggestion fell on death ears. You can get hotel room for less than a pitch fee at times. Why , with most caravans and motor homes, fitted with bathrooms equivalent to a cruise ship are shower blocks still being added at sites. Perhaps they could reduce fees by having surcharge for shower blocks leading to the reduced pitch fee as per non facility sites. As for the marketing ploy of telling you how much you save on a pitch fee as a member is farcical . Nobody would pay the non member fee. The CL network and rallies are the only things I value from the club.

What a torrid experience you had with the Yarmouth site, I agree that the “pitch prep time” should have been sufficient to have noticed the pegs were in the wrong place for the next camper. I have to say though, I’ve had nothing but positive CAMC site visits and some really great helpful wardens. Some years ago I did mistakenly pitch incorrectly, this was pointed out in a very polite and professional manner by the warden, who said that as I was end of row I could leave it; (campervan/offside awning). I thanked them but said if it’s wrong then I’ll move it, which I did. Prices have increased, however my last CAMC stay a fortnight ago in Devon was £32 per night with fantastic facilities and peaceful location. Looking forward to your next video, hope the work on the drive is going well👍

We have been unlucky with our experience at Yarmouth but in the main we think the club have a lot of work to do in winning the confidence back of a lot of their members. The new booking system introduced last year cost them dear and their price increases on some of the sites have been very high. They are certainly sending regular discount e-mail offers out to us on a regular basis. Hi Dave and Helen, the missus was cringing with the camera work at height, she is not keen on even looking at pictures, let alone going up heights herself, so well done both. Thought that site was nice, but too pricey for what it was. It would seem thatvthe CAMC have gone too far with pricing, evidenced by discounting offers being sentbout regularly now and sites not at high occupancy rates as recently experienced. We are going away from club sites where possible, prefer basic 5 pitch CL’s with EHU anyway and of course the owners are generally the wardens too, and to be fair, most, but not all are super friendly. (It is their business after all). However, must say with one exception some years ago, club wardens are generally quite polite, some more than others, not a job for me though, I would not like to have to deal with some vanners and especially the feral kids we have come across- incidentally, only on club sites, so I guess they have bad days too. This is probably our last year we renew, just done as members of both clubs, they do not represent good value anymore, although club insurance and breakdown policies may mean we have to stay with one, time will tell.

I agree some wardans are a pain but most are lovely. We're on a club site at the minute and great wardans and site. Went on private site beginning of year and terrible. We got 3free nights but never returned. For us its the caravan club. Sorry x Alison

Hi Alison & Keith, we have had some really wonderful stays on caravan club sites and can't disagree with you. Most of the wardens are amazing but we've been unlucky with a few also and some of the sites do require some investment we think. We know you'll always get good and bad, bit like staying in a hotel, sometimes great and sometimes disappointing, I should know, I lived in many for 25 years! We don't renew again until July next year so we have a fair bit of time to be influenced, one way or the other. Hope you're both well. Take care, Helen & Dave :o)

Well, this video has only been up seven hours and had over 1.6k views so far. Guess Yarmouth site will be short of bookings next year. Serves them right, can’t stand jobsworths who forget who pays their wage. The pitches looked ridiculously close to each other there anyway, I’d never stay due to that alone but now I know about their customer service, it’s blacklisted. I too prefer the cls.

Hi and thanks very much for your comment and sharing your views. There was no need to have the attitude they had, it’s how you speak to people that counts and the attitude was to authoritarian for me to stand by and accept. Think some people are just not cut out for customer facing roles. Thanks again, Dave & Helen 👍

Hi Helen &Dave , I must admit we tend to use private sites more as usually really friendly & they value your custom ! Never had a major ‘warden problem’ but we’ve tended to use the smaller CL sites which we really like but sometimes feel we miss out on interaction with other caravaners! Don’t think we’ll be renewing to be honest . Keep up the good work & keep the vlogs coming thanks Ian & Shirley

Hi Ian & Shirley, jury out for us until July next year when our membership of both clubs runs out. We may not renew either of the main clubs as we have found most private sites to be very good. Thanks again and take care. Dave & Helen.

Hi Dave. Do you mind if I ask you a question about your caravan. Is your caravan a eccles/swift ? And if so how pleased are you with your caravan. The reason I ask is because I have just bought a Swift challenger X 880 and it looks very similar to your lovely van. Thanks Dave.

Hi Greg, it’s a Sterling Eccles 580. Sterling is owned by swift and many of the swift vans we have seen look very similar. Sounds like you’ve got yourself a good one there 👍👍

Hi Sue, we're finding the prices are just getting a bit too much. It's affordable but not comparable to some of the lovely private sites. ATB, Dave & Helen.

Bircham mill looks like one to avoid at that price, for a site with very little facilities like that I wouldn’t pay more that £25. The wee shop again looked a bit of a rip off.

Can’t agree with you on this. We think given there is a cafe, bakery, games room, individual toilets and showers it’s certainly worth a lot more than £25. How many sites have you been to with a working mill in the grounds. We think it was slightly over priced but you wouldn’t get a site with all of this on it for £25. Appreciate your views though and thanks for watching. Cheers, Helen & Dave 😊
