A lot of the times, my wife/family controls my cycling. Although they’re all generally supportive of it, I can think of a number of cycling escapades I would undertake if my loved ones didn’t have priority.

I once heard that in certain retail settings, the use of stressful music in the background subconsciously persuaded shopper to buy more stuff - after the current episode of The GCN show (big fan, by the way) I walked away feeling unsettled and anxious with a compulsion to go shopping - off to the impulse purchase aisle...

Dan is a genuine inspiration to all of us middle aged ex athletes that fell out of shape. That we can do it, maybe a little slower, if we just get out there and try. You don't have to keep up with kids just keep improving yourself and get back in those ride videos we miss you. And Matt. Keep laughing Si your almost there too.

Who REALLY controls cycling? Surely it's the shadowy Velominati headed by the love child of Eddie Merckx and Beryl Burton, they are guarding the Holy Grail of cycling. Which, in turn is hidden in a desert valley only accessible by following a set of tasks, which are cryptically described in Sean Connery's notebook.

I love having Si and Lloydy back together. You can tell Si is happy too as he keeps giggling and making fun at Dan’s age (“electronic bike??” 😆) They are like the wise old carpenter and the wee dafty who’s good crack but still a liability when it comes to making a brew 😁👌🏻

I fear this is going to end with a new marketing strategy for bikes and parts where they are intentionally delayed and sold at overinflated prices. Creating a sense of pressure / urgency for people to buy stuff.

Money runs cycling and money is in road racing. Mountain bikes sell more numbers but less total money followed by commute bikes and kid's bikes. Road cycles come in 4th in terms of numbers of bikes sold, but #1 in money.

Would disagree on that tho, because there is a caveat. Yes, mtb sells more. But that is because a mtb covers everything from off-road genre, to MTBs for a commute to the mall. But if we talk about MTBs purchased purely for the intention of riding it in an off-road terrain, I’d dare say that it is dwarfed by road bike sales. That said, MTBs riders tend to be a way more dedicated and carefree bunch tho, and way more likely to upgrade/slap on new toys just for kicks and laughs. You’d often see mtb riders upgrading/swapping parts frequently. Roadies however, then to be more conservative for some reason, and hate change/upgrades once they find something that works. Hence the small number of mtb riders still make up a sizable sales compared to roadies. I do both, so just an observation from my time in both communities.

@@87togabito Thank you for the thought provoking input and comments. Your insight matches what I have seen. Roadies tend to ride more miles at least in good weather. I see a lot of mountain bikes on the back of cars and on front porches but not that many on the road. The lower income people in Idaho Falls' downtown area tend to ride more often than roadies. They are on mountain bikes. When I didn't have a car, I used a mountain bike or fat tire bike to grocery shop. Mountain bikes might be more common but far less flashy and beautiful.

I think you missed journalists and cycling influencers such as GCN itself as key players in the cycling industry. When a consumer looks to buy a product, we generally look to the reviews of journalists, influencers or KZfaq channels for guidance. If, for example, Si had said that the XPLR gravel range was a waste of money, I am sure there would be a notable impact on sales given that GCN has almost 3 million subscribers. However, journalists and the like are often gifted components or paid to advertise them, creating a catch 22 scenario. To follow on from the earlier example; what would the impact be on GCN if Si had rubbished the XPLR range? Annoying a big tech player such as SRAM would surely be detrimental to GCN in the long run. It's an interesting debate and I think Si and Dan raised some very interesting points and I definitely learned a thing or two. Keep up the great work team 👍🏻🚴‍♂️

I know this wasn’t part of this video but I was wondering if you could do a segment on how to fuel when you are a diabetic. You have done asthma videos in the past which were very helpful so I wondered if you had any information about diabetes and cycling. I ask because a lot of carbs are usually bad for diabetes but needed to fuel rides. Any information would be fantastic. Keep up the good job and love the videos.

I love the helmet!! Just imagine you upload the route you are gonna do, don't need anymore the head unit because all information is right there in the corner of your eyes, can preview the way to go by some need for speed GPS! Don't know what all the fuss is about. After watching the GCN SHOW on 21st Sept and hearing about all the comments on this episode of the GCN SHOW, I decided to come back and rewatch this one. Still not getting it, similar to last week, when I first watched it and not once did the background music enter my mind. Having said that, it's a great way to increase the 'view counter', now that I and probably many more people have watched it twice, LOL.
