I tend to work on the basis of look ridiculous and obvious, but for some having a neon sign overhead wouldn't be enough. I have had a few people telling me they saw me riding and that I looked ridiculous, I point out the 'I saw you' part is what matters to me. I stick to the roads but have had to shout at a number of motorists to ensure I don't die.

My cargo bike has 29x3" tires that laughs at tram tracks. Going back to my road bike where every acorn sized pebble is perilous is terrifying, so it mostly sits on the bike trainer while I do most of my riding on the cargo bike. Silly, but works for me.

That happened to me once a few years ago. I thought I had hopped over a railway track with my mountain bike. The rear wheel got caught. The bike went one way, I was tossed the other. I scraped my elbow, and my arm was sore for a few days. It took a little while to heal. One thing you notice when you're healing is how much extra energy your body uses for the healing process. It's also good to stock up on good quality medical supplies. Tegaderm dressings don't stick to the wound like gauze does, and it has a clear window so you can see how it's doing.

My biggest cycling fear is losing a sprint to a cow. A few years ago I came upon a cow standing in the road that startled as I passed. I then found myself in a full on sprint with the cow as we looked at each other while only about 3 feet apart. The cow gave up the sprint first, and afterwards, my friends awarded me the Yellow Guernsey.

the cows we have no bear little resemblance to massive beasts that were introduced to the world from the plains of south america. they were 7ft tall and made of horns and hooves. the ones we have now were bred for docility and stupidity. I Rode the Great Divide route with warnings of bears, elk, mountain lions foremost in my mind, for about a week. After that you accept that tiny risk like all the other tiny risks in life. However, after a lifetime of riding (and crashing) in Wales I suffered a very sudden meeting with a sheep on a descent about 18 months ago. 45mph to tarmac hurt and at the age of 46 has almost (but not quite) made me more cautious near our wooly friends. The sheep was fine by the way, gave me a filthy look and carried on grazing🙂

I rode a bike everywhere as a kid, then as I got older I just stopped, not sure why. I recently took up riding before the pandemic at age 41 and have crashed more times now than I can remember because of lack of confidence/being afraid of things like cornering and braking hard. The last crash resulted in a broken arm when I clipped the edge of the path. But, because I have crashed so much, I have also learned what not to do and improve my bicycle handling.
@alinapopescu872
@alinapopescu872 2 жыл бұрын
I can relate to what you're saying. As a child I can't remember being afraid of anything. I've already crashed twice because my pedal touched the curb, I find descents of any kind terrifying, and it's also more difficult now, at 43, to pick myself up than it ever was when I was 7. And yes, I've learnt a lot from my little accidents. Being knocked over by a car was entirely my fault, but I don't think I'll ever stop being very afraid of cars.

just keep riding the doorzone because all drivers around the world need to know that if we cyclist ride in the doorzone they get more space on the road. and if a driver ever opens his door again on you and you can stop in time explain them why they have to look and why we ride the doorzone and then ask them to repark their car so they can learn from you conversation.

Things that scare me on the bike... distracted drivers are the worst. Every single ride I see more than 10 drivers using their hand held cell phones (in cars I KNOW have bluetooth capability) or fiddling with their sat-nav. To a lesser degree once out of Toronto (where I live) the odd deer can jump out across the road on early morning rides. But drivers are for sure the scariest thing. I'm 44 seasons into cycling with being hit by cars 17 times and EVERY time it was by a driver making a turn and not seeing me (despite lights, loud kit and the fact I'm 6'6" so a big road object).

A few weeks ago I wanted to go for a ride. My wife said, "I don't like you riding on the road all by yourself, please ride the trail." I said OK and headed off to the local former railroad track that had been converted to a trail. As was riding the trail, but I had to cross a road at a controlled crossing. I was pleased to see I had a green light. I entered the intersection as a car rolled into the intersection directly in front of me. I dodged the vehicle but couldn't avoid the curb. Down I went. The car drove on as I gathered myself. It took me a couple of weeks to heal and get back on the bike. I wonder if my new fear of random cars not doing what they are supposed to do is going to make riding more dangerous.

My two greatest cycling fears: class A RV drivers pulling a car. When they pass you, they have a tendency to tour to the right to see you, forgetting that they are longer than their sight line and the car swings in behind them presenting a greater danger that the RV it’s self. Scary points to riding bikes; traffic , storm grates( with slots large enough to catch bicycle wheels), catching biting or stinging insects in my shirts, unruly dogs and people chasing me, or grabbing at me and my bike, roads with no shoulder, and a dropoff beyond that edge of the road, (lots of sharp objects in the ditchs, including seedling, and sapling tree stobs).

On bikepacking trips I am terrified of getting a shredded tire that can't be fixed. Never mind that I've spent my entire life having never had a sidewall tear, but short of carrying a spare tire it is one thing I know I would not be able to recover from. I also fear a hub seizing up, or a bottom bracket melting down as well, but the tire one comes to mind every time I plow through some chunky jeep trail. Most of my other fears have been addressed by carrying spare spokes, an emergency cassette tool, tire boot, tube, multi-tool, tire plugger, spare sealent, patch kit, spare shifter cable, spare brake pads, missing links+tool, tire levers, a section of chain, glue, needle+thread, duck tape, loctite, etc, etc.

I once rode inside a herd of cows. I will never forget this: It was a mountainbike race going through some rural dirt roads in the woods of Norway. I was allmost last and i could hear the ATV closing in behind me. I came around a corner doing 30 kph and the road was completely blocked by cows. I proceeded to yell and make a skid to get them to move, and move they did.. They collectively decided that running the same way i was headed was the sollution, wich ment i could either slow down to cow-pace or risk it. So i did what any idiot would, and powered on, if was about 20 cows running along side me on the narrow road and i've never felt more alive before or after. I managed to not get trampled, the race-standing was of no importance, but the experience was wild!

My gear cable snapped in the middle of nowhere as I was cycling to Crewe to catch a train back to London. I can do basic roadside repairs but a snapped gear cable is beyond me. A few miles into cycling the remaining 14miles on my two remaining gears, my back wheel slipped out from underneath me and I hit the dirt. Lucky for me I was right next to a police van (for a car had crashed in the same spot earlier that day) and the kindly PCSO gave my bike and me a lift to the station to catch my train home. So there we go - three fears covered in one trip: mechanical, crash and police.

Facts: The most dangerous animals are always car drivers. Especially aggressive male car drivers, actively following you, trying to murder you. When not hit, then getting of their cars to fight with you. Happened to me 2 times within 6 months, in “peaceful” Denmark. I have experienced wild animals in serious life threatening situations, but the animals were always reasonable, indeed. Almost crushed iwith an emu. We both got very scared and cried loud. Then chased by a huge group of wild horses. Literally chased. II thought I was going to die, actually. But I sprinted till I couldn’t more. The 50-70 horses covered the whole road, but stopped before the got me. They gave me a message. Then a marabou stork an early morning - it had not seen me. A poisonous snake trying to attack me (the fault of car drivers stopping its path…) And a few more wild animals crossing my road in Australia. Then a young female cow on the countryside 2 weeks ago. We both ran away in opposite directions..🤣

In the early 1990's in my 20's I lived in Los Angeles. My Vitus 979 and I were afraid of nothing. I rode with traffic, used the left turn lane, drafted vans and trucks and could track stand for hours (even taught myself to roll backwards then back forward). Now in my mid 50's I live in Michigan which has a lot of bike paths. I drive a delivery truck for a living and see how many people are on their cell phones while driving. Would not risk riding on the street.

Riding near the kerb is a nightmare. All the drain covers, just the right width to grab your front wheel. And heavy vehicles seem to push the asphalt to the edges.

Where I live, some areas do not have reliable piped water. The solution is to ferry in the precious liquid using water bowsers. They are notorious for spilling water on the road. So was my fate when I took a 90-degree turn only to hit such a wet patch. My front wheel forgot to obey the rules of traction and I hit the tarmac hard on my tailbone. Suffice to say, I have a healthy fear of any water bowser I see when out cycling.

Speed wobble is TERRIFYING. I was descending slowly through those cows because my major wobble (involving a concussion) was about a year prior. I had NO idea what was happening, so I can say that for me the first one we def frightening. It took a few years to not be afraid of descents and a few more to get to actually enjoy them. FYI clamping top tube with knees (and generally changing the moment of the frame) does seem to help, but relaxing also seems to be preventative (RELAX is of course easier said than done).

Things I'm scared of: Loose dogs in rural Tennessee. Absolutely freaking terrifying. Trucks buzzing by me as close as they can get, then gunning it while blasting their horn as soon as they're right next to me. Flat tyre. Straight up. Can't muscle those suckers back on the dang rim. Also, I ride a Brompton these days and I am *dreading* the day when I get a flat on it. Haven't had to change a Brompton tyre yet, but I've watched the videos and oh my gosh. Things I'm also scared of, but not necessarily just on the bike: Moose. Geese. Bears.

I do fear crashes of many kinds. In the country where it's hilly, I fear hitting a patch of sand on the road, as it has caused so many of my crashes. In the city where traffic is heavy and clearances are small, I fear being hit, though it hasn't happened to me in a very long time. I've learned how to be aware and wear a rear view mirror on my helmet whenever I ride.

I've heard of cases of people losing their nerve to cycle again after having a crash. If I take a tumble off the bike, as soon as I get back up, I'll immediately do some Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT tapping), to discharge any energetic trauma that might be stored in my body. I've found it works wonders for improving my confidence to immediate hop back on the saddle and continue riding!

I think every ride is a mix of scary and sublime, all those variables over which a rider has absolutely no control. And the craziest injury I ever suffered was in a charity bike ride on the C&O Canal towpath from Cumberland, Maryland to the District of Columbia, Washington DC. It was the first day of a three-day event in '02, I think it was, and I was chatting at the back of the pack as I rode alongside an experienced rider when his front tire kicked a stick into my front spokes and, mid-conversation, over the bars and onto my chest I slammed into the gravel. And suddenly I was quietly nursing the pain of bruised ribs and just grinning and bearing it. Cycling may be scary, but don't ever show it, that'd be a cycling crime. :)

I was cycling on a road closed to traffic in Vancouver's north-shore mountains with my 4 yo daughter. She was about 15m ahead of me on her kids' bike when I spotted a bear on the side of the road about 10m in front of her. I called you "calmly" told to her to stop and walk backwards toward me. Bless her soul, though confused, she did as I directed. We turned back on that day.

I was almost killed by a herd of cows after I yelled at thier calf, I was out birding in the bush. It was staring at me from 6’ a way mooing, NONSTOP, and I yelled at it to go away and waved my red hat at it. It reared it head and charged, I ran down a hill the entire heard came after me, I ran up a hill and they FLEW up a hill after me. I was screaming the entire time and scaled a tree, I was 24. And since then, I fear cows.

My biggest fear is the wind blowing me towards a car that will hit me, also a bus pushing me down the road so much, that I go under the bus. Once a bus pushed me down the road, by taking me over in a tiny turn and I had to jump to the pedestrian pavement and pull my bike quickly so I do not get hit, was a bit shocking.

My biggest fear in riding is not being able to ride anymore. I have not been able to in a few weeks do to extreme pain. I visited the doc today and found I had 2 compressed discs in my back. My fears over here in Australia are of course snakes on the road ... came across 3 on my last ride on a back country road near where I live. Plus bounding kangaroos which are looking for a way to get out of your way which can include going through you if you are in the way of the escape route ... And not to forget of course the magpies swooping and whacking your back and helmet .... other than that its great being outdoors riding over here ... 🤣

Magpies are pretty savage here in Oz from late August through October. A particular brute unhorsed me several years back. Landed on a shoulder and tried to poke a beak into my brain. Had a near miss with a big roo one day; literally leapt over my front wheel. By far the worst is blacking out (carotid syncope) and hence riding while unconscious while tearing downhill. This never ends well. Cows? You're kidding.
