At their peak in the Southeast Asian country, they numbered 190 stores, offering free Wi-Fi and a seating area for guests while selling fresh local meals and traditional 7-Eleven snacks like the Slurpee. Despite the chain's popularity, the franchisee, PT Modern Internasional, shuttered all remaining 161 stores there in 2017.

I'm Indonesian, the main reason I think is that 711 is like a lifestyle for us. But Alfamart and Indomaret is like a need. If I need groceries, I will find it in Alfamart or Indomaret. But if I want to hang out a lil bit, I went to 711. The problem is, for Indonesian, lifestyle is changing rapidly. Today it booming and tomorrow comes new popular things. So the main problem I think is because 711 just a lifestyle for us Indonesian. Except they open their store in an apartment!

@@samsuyarjafar9966 Sebenernya video ini sudah cukup menjawab. 7 Eleven itu punya model bisnis yang beda dari Alfamart & Indomaret. 7 Eleven itu convenient store dia cuma boleh jual barang konsumsi (makanan & minuman) mirip kaya mini restoran, beda sama Indomaret dan Alfamart yg basisnya adalah retail/minimarket. Peraturan di Indonesia perusahaan asing ga boleh bikin retail di Indonesia, makanya ga pernah nemu kan 7 eleven jualan anduk, sendal, sapu atau beras? Karena dagangan mereka terbatas di makanan. Di sisi lain Indomaret dan Alfamart perusahaan lokal, mereka lebih leluasa ekspansi pasar mereka ke daerah lain, mereka yg awalnya cm retail jg mulai nyasar ke convenient store yg akhirnya ngambil pasar 7 eleven. Dengan kuantitas yg lebih besar jelas 7 eleven ga bisa bersaing.

it's more like the local businesses know our mindset. We go shopping in Alfamart/Indomaret because they provide our basic utilities with massive sales (like buy 2 free 1 and such) weekly, at weekends, holidays, even at the end of the month. 7-11 is more like a cheap Starbucks where you can buy snacks, drinks and have wifi to hang out. But for other than that, it's pricey. Even Circle K is struggling with that as well

In The Philippines,Alfamart was expanded since 2016 and now has 1000 branches nationwide mostly in Metro Manila and Calabarzon which is a dignified friendship between the Philippines and Indonesia

I did a case study on 7Eleven at campus, you didn’t mention the regulation about foreign mini market having to have seating areas and be included as a mini restaurant? Seeking local partners would have helped for this, but won’t minimize the competitions, if anything, it would generalize them even further and put them in fair competition with Indomaret/alfa. They need better USP than Slurpies & Nacho Cheese if they want to survive. 😂

No, no, no, you are wrong. all the causes that you spoke of were not the reason 7-11 failed in indonesia. They failed because they cannot matched the price of the similar products sold at indomaret and alfamart. For comparison, a bottle of 1.5L coca cola sold for Rp. 11,000,- (USD 0.75) at indomaret an alfamart, while 7-11 sold a bottle of 1.5L coca cola for Rp. 20.000,- (USD 1.36). And that pricing gap also applied to majority of their merchandise (except slurpees, indomaret and alfamart didn't have those in the past but they are catching on now). That explain why their sales were so low because who in their right mind would pay almost twice the price for the same stuffs you can get at indomaret or alfamart. Back in 2012, I shopped at 7-11 and when i saw their prices, well.... i knew they will go bankrupt soon.

Chains of international convenience stores had few chances outside Jabodetabek bro. The only chain that expands beyond Jabodetabek is Circle K. I have seen an outlet in Bali and Bandung once. Lawson has a store in Purwakarta (a toll road pitstop), but closes all outlets in Bandung. Govt actually does permit all chains to operate anywhere they want... But Indonesians think that international brand = expensive, elite while the price is actually the same. Cities and regencies outside Jabodetabek are resistant to Indomaret and Alfamart, even rural parts of Jabodetabek too. Before covid, none of these chains opened before 07.00 local time, to respect traditional market sellers. And when Indomaret and Alfamart are overrated in the capital, some cities perceived Indo and Alfa as middle class shop. There is one tier below like Indogrosir partner warung (mostly operated in Banten), provincial minimarkets (e.g. Yomart only operated in West Java), state owned (BUMN) shops like Pertamina's Bright, and unaffiliated shops designed as Indo/Alfa.

When I was in primary, my school was located just next to 7-11 store in Jakarta. I remembered seeing a lot of young adults and teenagers going to the convenience store only to buy a snack or a slurpee and sit on the provided chairs for hours making use of the free wifi there. Some of my classmates went to the store to buy a bag of chips for like 50 cents and add lots of nacho cheese from their machine. Their business model was unsustainable and that explained why 7-11 business venture failed to survive in Indonesia.

As a convenience store junkie for my Mineshine milk tea and coke zero fix😂, the real battle between these stores is the hot food lol! 7-11 has been the key player in our country for years, then came Minimart. They were battling with the fried chicken and rice meals seriously lol. Then came Lawson and Family Mart and their rice meals are the selling point especially in business/corporate districts. Don’t forget the ice cream and shakes/slushies! It’s not only the convenience and location. I always go to 7-11 for Mineshine because the other 3 doesn’t have it but I buy my fave cheese katsu and iced coffee from Lawson then sausage/franks from Family Mart and their ice cream matcha is also good haha! It’s better to have competition to get more options.

Most people who visit Alfa/Indomaret are housewife/moms. They need daily necessities like detergent, cooking oils etc more than they need bread and a cup of coffee or even beer (lots of Indonesian don't drink alcohol anyway). There are a lot of products that 711 just never sell.

I once went to buy some snack at Sevel when I was in Jakarta. But, then when I went back to my city, we got plenty of indomaret and alfamart. So yeah, it makes sense why this foreign store cannot survive. They didn't expand to other cities.

i think its not just because of indom*ret & alf*mart. 7*leven loses his opportunity in indonesia because: 1. incompetitive pricing (indonesian people is very sensitive with price tag) 2. it doesnt sell everything (ind*maret & alf*mart provide most of everything we need) 3. indonesian young people go to 7elev*n only to buy a cup of coffee and enjoy hours of its free WIFI. Then they get lunch on local food stall that give them more menu choice in very low price. They can get chicken rice with soup for less than one dollar for sure. 4. 7*leven cant meet governmental regulatory of convenient store.

The final nail in the coffin for 7-Eleven in Indonesia was the ban of alcohol sales in convenience store. Also both Indomaret and Alfamart has Indomaret Point and Lawson which basically copied what 7-Eleven did One major factor that this video didn't mention is Indonesian 7-Eleven was operating more like a restaurant rather than a convenience store and therefore was being treated as a restaurant by the government. When the alcohol ban was imposed, they simply can't pay the higher restaurant tax 7-Eleven did revolutionize the industry in Indonesia however. They just can't fight with the big fish

FYI the prices in indomaret and alfa are so damn expensive compared to local mini markets, but their services are way better, you can literally do everything in those two markets. Buy train tickets, top up your e-wallet, pay your lease, and if the atm is broken you can do the cash out too from the cashier like wow. And if you smart enough with all the promotions they offered you can get lower price for some products.

The only time I went to a 7-Eleven in Indonesia, there was no bottled water. Really. Indomaret and Alfamart are traveler's friends in Indonesia. They are everywhere, even in the middle of nowhere (in Indonesia)! You can even buy a train/plane ticket in an (some) Indomaret. How convenient is that? 😂

gmn ga bangkrut.... di indonesia , jajan ceban nongkrong dari jam 6 sore sampe jam 12 malam , cuman beli smurf, yg jajan 3 orang yg nongkrong 10orang... brisik doang , (tambahan) gaya gayaan bawa laptop, padahl ga ada data, modem pun ga punya. numpang wifi numpang cas laptop , cas hp, listrik boros kasir magabut rame doang jajan dikit parkiran penuh. (tamat sudah) kamsuepai di era itu

Back in 2010, my mom's promise of getting 711's chicken katsu and rice with cheese sauce and big gulp for breakfast was the one and only motivation I had to wake up early and go to school everyday, because at the time I deeply hated school with a passion lololol. That's why I was a little sad when they announced they're closing down 711 in indonesia, for the sole reason of having so much nostalgia with them. But I guess it made sense. Not enough generated revenue, the alcohol ban, the policy of them classified as a small scale restaurant, among other things

I have visited several 7-Elevens several years agp ,and don't see anything special about it..........just selling general stuffs with higher prices than Indomaret and Alfamaret ......so it's logic that they loose competition in Indonesia....

Actually Circle K also sell product more expensive than Indomaret or Alfamart, but Circle K managed survive by open some store at area where there isn't Indomaret or Alfamart or area where the consumer aren't consider the price as huge issue. The main reason why 7 Eleven failed in Indonesia because miscalculations concept. Modern International tried to attract consumers with original concept (something that actually never tried/tested before by 7 Eleven in other countries) with positioning 7 Eleven as not just ordinary convenience store, but also as place for hangout. While these concept (for while in early years) successfully attract consumers and increased 7 Eleven popularity in Jakarta, the concept that was convinced by Modern International unexpectedly caused huge losses financial in future. (Modern International probably at the time didn't calcute effect of implementation their original concept, and until present never admit it was huge mistake) There were large amount consumers came only hangout at 7 Eleven for many hours only purchased few product. Sometime some 7 Eleven store crowded by people that went to hangout at 7 Eleven, as result created distrubing scenery for people which seriously went to 7 Eleven for shopping. Obviously it was huge disadvantaged for 7 Eleven.

Because it's bussiness model isn't suited for Indonesia, they are expensive and you still hang out just by buying the cheapest item which is a soda drink for $1 Not only that they choose the most strategic location which increase the rent cost, and other costly things
