Another little video essay. This time talking about Cannes Film Festival and it's ridiculously long standing ovations - even for films that don't necessarily deserve them. Subscribe: www.youtube.com/@bAbyProd./vi...

There's a couple typos in these subtitles which I just noticed and it's driving me insane 🙃

You deserve a 40-minute ovation for that. I'll remain seated, though.

Well I think if you break it down it isn't necessarily as pretentious as you make out. Of course, there will always be a certain level of narcissism in that kind of crowd but I think it's important to look at how the whole thing plays out. They've just finished witnessed what is likely to be a very good piece of work to which warrants a couple of minutes of applause in any event. Any live theatre or dance performance you go and see will have you clapping for at least that long when it's over so this isn't exactly an unreasonable length of time for a round of applause. There's then that big camera that zooms in on each of the main players - director, writer, main actors etc - and acts as a literal spotlight for them while projecting their image up on the big screen. The ensuing applause essentially acts as praise for each of their contributions to making the final piece of work that they've just witnessed. Say you have a director, the writer, four main actors that are being spotlighted and each have 30 seconds of a close-up on the big screen and so the crowd praises their work with solid applause for that length of time - that's an extra 3 minutes already. Like you say nobody wants to stop so it's like a train that just keeps on going.
