The Victorian era is so overrepresented in film that many people have nostalgia for a time period they didn't live through. But what did Victorian people actually look like?

I would love to hear more of your thoughts on steampunk and the blending of victorian aesthetics without the historical political elements! Great video as always :D

The timing of Abdul walking in after Queen Victoria to the voiceover of "England was at the centre of the world...glossing over the British Empire's destructive, genocidal impact" was kind of perfect. Was that on purpose? Also, I cheered when you brought in LXG, I was waiting for you to bring it up!

Thank you! And yes, it was intentional... we have the channel's video editor Avital Oehler to thank for that, I just provide the clips and she puts it all together!

another great episode gavia. the corset discussion made me think of a wonderful museum exhibit i went to about the history of underwear which said in the past fashionable silhouettes for women where created through structured underwear and clothing illusions (big skirts ect) but in the modern day we expect women to be able to alter theur actual bodies to meet the changing demands of fashion. really stuck with me.

Ooh, that’s such a fascinating way too look at it. We’re trained to think of losing all that structure as inherently liberating, but it does seem kind of sinister when combined with modern diet culture.

Yes, absolutely! The idea of shaping the body via corsetry vs reshaping the body thru dieting is a major transition in 20th century western fashion culture, although of course dieting has been around for a long time in many forms. Essentially, our own minds have become the corset, which is no less damaging than all the fearmongering of wearing a corset itself.

This might veer a little heavy, but I think it could be really interesting to look at Viking media, including how it's been connected to certain modern groups. SO many of the elements that are in play now are ahistorical, but still create a sort of tension around the time period, that is then sometimes reflected back into media like Midsommar

Seconded, the modern perception of Viking culture needs some serious dissection and analysis.

Yes, I think that would be a really interesting topic for a video! It's an enternally popular theme in movies/TV, but there's a lot of range between intentionally ahistorical visuals and shows/films that try to be a bit more "realistic."

For historical period pieces, I think it would be fun to take a look at classic noir stuff from the 40s, with its mix of gritty crime drama and high society glamor. I would also really love to see your take on The Expanse. I think they do a great job of showing divisions of class and culture through costume and prop details.

Thanks for this - loved it! Really well thought through and illustrated with some great insights. The perfect length too - long enough to get quite in depth, but not too long to start getting a bit boring. Personally I'd love to see a similar video on Edwardian fashion in film/TV versus reality. Maybe not as well represented as the Victorian era, but certainly moving towards what we'd recognise today. Thanks again!

I do think the plethora of primary sources for stories and aesthetics in the era plays a huge role. I am, for instance, fascinated by Empress Theodora, but what did her clothes actually look like? there's one contemporary image of her (that I know of), and it's so stylized that I'm not sure what she's even wearing. I do hope that, with research becoming a bit easier in the age of the internet, we'll see more films set in earlier periods, but I know that the temptation of an adaption of something that's already beloved is a lot for Hollywood to resist. Though with the popularity of Game of thrones, maybe we'll get some interest in more content about the War of the Roses? There's a lot of untapped drama there.

I would agree with your insights. The only thing I would caution is that for filmmakers, as opposed to historians, history is about telling a story. Whether that story is true or not is relevant in the slightest. With the caveat that you are not insinuating that it is, of course. And it very hard to tell a story that, most importantly, people will pay for if you are always knocking on about every evil in the world. Filmmaking is, after all, largely about giving some escapism to people. There is a pretty well defined line between artistic filmmaking and a documentary. The art does have to lean on the facts but is not bound to them.

Congratulations! what a beautiful video. The information and the music fit very well. This period is a landmark in the English history not only for social and economic changes, but also for fashion. I guess your video is worth using even for teaching English as a second language. Well done. By the way, is it possible to know the piano piece you used for the scenes from minute thirty (1'30")? Thank you in advance and keep it up.

The Georgian period. Particularly for men. I want to see all the ruffles and intricate embroidery. But in general, I think we just need more movies from different time periods and placed in different areas.

Nice video, thanks for making and sharing. I would general like to see more non (western) europe period dramas, my first though was ancient assyrian but if we stay in europe more early medival things.

Ya know I often think about how it was hypothetical person for a person to live through both the Civil War and WWII. But of all the known historical figures to become centennials, I'm not aware of any who lived from around 1850 to around 1950.

It's really refreshing to see the costume aspect tackled with the social and imperialist concepts underlying the genre! It's hard to reconcile an interest in the genre when you're from the global south; this was very helpful in unpacking the different threads in the issue :)

I’m a fan of the Georgian era in film, even if I think it’s almost as over represented in film as the Victorian era. Everything’s just as shiny and floofy, but it’s before men’s fashion became really boring and subdued.
