Why Daniel Ricciardo is suddenly a serious threat to Sergio Perez in F1

Daniel Ricciardo might be back to his best in Formula 1, and starting to show he could get a Red Bull Racing return after all.
Ricciardo was performing at a Red Bull level at the Mexican Grand Prix - literally. He qualified alongside Max Verstappen AND outpaced Sergio Perez, which is as much of a statement as it’s possible to make in an AlphaTauri.
ESPECIALLY as Ricciardo followed that up with a strong seventh place in the grand prix, running ahead of several faster cars for a lot of it and passing every test of his racecraft, tyre management and pace, while Perez completely imploded and wiped himself out at the first corner.
And this is about much more than a single result. It’s what made such a performance possible, the reasons to believe it’s sustainable, how much life it breathes into Ricciardo’s post-McLaren renaissance and the fact he looks like he really COULD be what Red Bull needs from Verstappen’s future team-mate.

This is how it's probably being lined up: - Riccardo is put in AlphaTauri to measure how good of a pairing he could potentially make with Verstappen, and is kept there for 2024. - Checo's contract ends in 2024. - Lawson showed he'd be a good fit in the AlphaTauri and proved himself. - If Checo loses his seat, upgrade Daniel to Red Bull and Liam to AlphaTauri so they have a solid "safe" lineup in both teams. They've said time and time again Daniel isn't being thought about but we all know that's a big fat lie.

I'm a McLaren fan, and I love Lando and Daniel. I really wish Daniel could've gotten on top of the McLaren while he was there, because I wanted to see the two of them succeed together. I was pretty sure Daniel hadn't lost anything but was suffering from a bad paring of his style and the McLaren being crazy to drive. I had a feeling he was going to be pushing Yuki, but I didn't realize he was going to be matching and beating him this soon. Ricciardo got binned off at Hungary and recovered to finish a respectable 13th ahead of Yuki, the way he recovered after getting binned off and the early stop would suggest he would of scored points straight away after getting into the seat which people seem to shrug off the impact the Hungary incident really had on his race

He probably could've had points in Belgium too if his quali lap for the GP wasn't deleted for track limits. @@CharlesFreck The whole issue with track limits really has gotten out of hand. F1 really needs to look at the track borders on corners where there are a lot of limit issues and change them. Whether the Danny Ric haters like it or not, the simple fact is that Ricciardo has beaten Verstappen in the same car more than any other teammate Verstappen has ever had, and when he was beaten by teammate Verstappen, & wasn’t let down by his RB breaking down, Ricciardo was almost always close behind. This is a feat that Gasly, Albon and Perez have all failed to replicate in the last 4 years since Ricciardo left on his own terms. This makes him one of the only Red Bull/ Torro Rosso/ Alpha Tauri drivers who hasn’t been let go because of poor performance. He has proven he deserves another chance in a top team like Red Bull. EDIT- For those who have commented that Max was young & inexperienced when he first joined Red Bull which is the only reason Daniel was faster, you seem to forget when Daniel joined RB, in his first season he regularly placed higher & actually hauled more points than his 4 time world champion teammate, Sebastian Vettel. How quickly you guys forget that.

Tsunoda and Perez are both in the hot seat. Ricciardo showed the AT might not be as awful to drive as expected, and given how Lawson was able to put a point on the board in just a few races mid-season, he's there or thereabouts with Yuki. Perez absolutely chucked any goodwill from his home race into the bin, but I'd argue Tsunoda is counting his lucky stars right now since Perez distracted the media from how Tsunoda binned it out of impatience while in a much needed points position for AT. On a weekend where Ricciardo was flying, that was the last thing he needed. I get it's not a popular opinion, but given the track record of the Red Bull organization, I'm certain this conversation is happening alongside the conversations about Perez.

I totally agree. I don't dislike or hate either Yuki or Perez, but you can't deny that both drivers binned it on their own, and both drivers are consistently making silly mistakes. In my opinion, the only reason Perez is still there is they're trying to do the right thing and at least give him a chance at P2 in the championship, to remove him now does nothing other than guarantee he loses that P2. It makes no sense to remove Perez at this late stage, let him try to find some form and retain P2, then he might stand a chance of keeping his seat, if not he's a goner. Plus, as you said, the only thing really saving Yuki is that all the focus is on Perez, but Yuki is another driver who seems to consistently find ways to ruin his own race.

I've been surprised for much of this season how supportive Red Bull have been for Perez--one very public person notwithstanding (speaking of which--I notice he's been out of the public eye lately--curious). This is the same organization that ousted DeVries before mid-season, and has a track record of dumping underperformers without regret. I don't think Riccardo has the RBR #2 seat in the bag, but it's no coincidence he's driving for AlphaTauri. If he continues to look good this season, I can't imagine why they would choose to stick by Perez. This is not Perez bashing, but if RIcciardo is clearly the better option, you'd be pretty silly not to go with him. If it had just been the checo first turn incident or just Daniel finishing a half second behind the mercedes of russell it wouldn't have the same impact as both happening. Throw the fact that Daniel out qualified checo in an AT and it seems that RBs decisions may be making themselves. Now one weekend doesn't make the decision a lock but the next three weeks could. Right? I think DR's performances out of the box in Silverstone for the test, Alpha Tauri in Hungary, then his first regular weekend post injury are really railroading RBR into a decision, especially when compared to Checo's performance over the same period. The one thing DR has always been is cool headed, measured, and usually a very clean racer. Combine his pace with those qualities and the story writes itself. Unfortunately, I think you're right. BUT, the only thing that keeps me thinking that Sergio will be back next year is that Red Bull firmly will support Max as a #1. They want a consistent #2, and Sergio was providing that and then some, until lately. The big question if you're Red Bull is, do you disturb Max and his cry baby dad(which sucked ass as a racer, used to watch him live) by legitimately putting up another #1 driver on the team? Or continue to be patient and support Sergio in the hopes that he can be a consistent #2.

@@XJohnnyXBravoX I think Red Bull this year was so dominant they could afford Sergio underperforming. But when the other teams close the performance gap and the whole field is closer together. They NEED a stronger second driver to secure the championship. I don't think anyone can beat Max right now.. The only people that would give him a good fight are Hamilton, Alonso and probably Leclerc. But if I were Red Bull, I would go for a Albon or a Ricciardo. I think they would make excellent second drivers. All they need is consistentcy and being close to Max. Nobody would expect them to beat him. As long as they can beat the rest. Obviously Checo is not up to the task. He is struggling to get second in a car that vastly superior to the rest of the field. Just look at how close Hamilton is to him in the championship. I think Checo is done. I would not let him drive past this season.

@@agustinguaita9137 Exactly, he walked away because the RB wasn't the best car to be in at the time, frequent issues with the car, and often had to change parts which resulted in having to start at the back, he got sick of that and went searching for something better. Unfortunately for him, Renault failed to deliver on their promises, the car simply wasn't good enough, and despite the name change, they are still not good enough. McLaren was clearly a car/driver compatibility issue, you'd think someone at this level would be able to adapt, but then again it's hard to break habits/muscle memory. Still, if he gets into the RB, he'll need to be putting in consistently good results. Even if he can't beat Max he needs to be in second place 99% of the time, or they'll look for a new talent.

It's so refreshing to see a proper serious analysis. This covers it all. Speaks of Ricciardo "pre-Mclaren" form and not just "Red Bull days" (Renault days are so overlooked). Explains Ricciardo's driving style is not actually one of a "late breaker" and how important proper feedback from the drivers can be; Suggests the real problem at Mclaren was not the drivers but actually car design (imo, James Key); Also suggests that Daniel's driving style may make for a more proper pairing for Max than Checo; Highlights the importance of the most successful formula of commercial storytelling: the Hero Journey. There is no Carlos Slim that can pay the global effect of a fairytale ending for a very liked driver's struggles. That being said, I hope things keep turning alright for Daniel; If Checo is sacked, I hope he can find a car that better fits his style (same as what happened with Ricciardo); And I am very glad Mclaren got rid of its real problem: James Key. Now we have an historical outfit back in the front with two amazingly talented young drivers.

The second driver in points is in danger of losing second place whilst in arguably the most dominant car in history. Not that mad.

I don’t think Danny will take Checo’s seat but I could be wrong. If Red Bull just wants a different wingman for Max, I’d see if I could land Lando. No pun intended.

won't happen, why would Lando go to RB and be second to Max? the RB car is made for Max due to its front end and driving style, he has had many years to craft it to his liking. it could destroy Lando's career if he made that move.

apparently RB made another inquiry recently to Lando about a 2024 drive which he turned town

@@MakrManiathe car wasn’t made to Maxs choice. The front end nature of the rb19 was made to make it overall faster. Lando also had the same driving style and the gap between them would be extremely close.

I think the opposite honestly mate I think if Lando goes to Red Bull we could easily get another Lewis Nico rivalry. Also it would be good for Max who really hasn’t been tested in the last two years by anyone else. We all know that Lando can easily run at the top with adequate equipment and since he now has comparable driving style to Danny I think he would adjust to the Red Bull without much problem.

I would have loved to hear an extended analysis of Ricciardo's driving style compared to Checo. After all, aside performance, an argument for either driver could be that their driving style fits better to how RB typically designs the car for Max. Adaptability to the car seems a limitation for both Danny Ric and Checo, and if I recall correctly Alex once said that the RB drives as if you play a computer game on the highest sensitivity... So which driver can cope best with that heavy front end like Verstappen can? Would love to hear The Race analysis on this. Keep up the good work!

We Aussies are pretty proud right now with not just having one Aussie driving but having *two* drivers, Oscar and Danny. We finally have some drivers who can threaten the top spot 🥳 Webber really let us down in some ways so it’s a pretty big thing for us to have drivers who have a chance to do well

or, it could be track specific and we wont know that until brazil this coming weekend. as you pointed out earlier, Mexico is a bit of a favourite for ricciardo.

I still think with RB saying they want to rebrand AT into a non junior and front line team, it make sense to put Checo in that team and DR in RB where his and max's driving styles are similar. Checo can then be senior driver in the second team like Bottas to Alfa, and he can bring his Mexican sponsors, which have never been needed by RB. That way the car can be more to his preference.

I've always liked DR and was sad when he felt the need to leave Red Bull but I understand why he did at that time. He then got stuck out in the wilderness for several years, which was painful to see. I was really happy when Checo got the Red Bull drive and hoped he'd do well, and initially, he seemed to find his feet. Unfortunately, he doesn't seem to be able to pull himself out of this downward spiral. On balance, I'd love to see if Ricciardo could make a successful return to RB but also hope that Checo can find a suitable drive, fitting of his talents.

Daniel has been very solid every race he's been a part of. He's been within Yuki's pace from the start without any testing. Now he's found a nice balance setup on the car and he's outperformed Yuki. I think in the remaining 3 races he'll be on par with yuki at the very least

Its was one race, The Race. Im a checo fan, no doubt. But id love to see Danny finish the year with strong performances like this. If he can finish the year with performances like mexico, it might mean the end of the road for checo at RB.
