The Elves and Dwarves are two major kindreds within Tolkien’s works, but they often come into conflict with one other over the history of Middle-earth. Thank you all so much for watching, let me know your thoughts about the relationship between these two kindreds in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

From the beginning the Elves held the Dwarves in contempt, considering them "unlovely" and "uncouth." The elvish word "Naugrim" means "The Stunted People." Not very polite. Relations were further poisoned by several incidents, not least of which was the death of King Thingol at the hands of dwarves. The Dwarves themselves tended to be more than a little stand-offish, and had a culture and tradition that was alien and mysterious to their neighbors. It's worth noting that the Jews were Tolkien's inspiration for the Dwarves, at least in terms of their "wandering", and their "foreign" nature. What little of the Dwarvish language we know is based on Hebrew. The presence of the Dwarves in the West is analogous to that of Jews in western Europe. (I'm not making this up. Tolkien explicitly said that his idea of the Dwarves, though originally based on Scandinavian legend, was eventually heavily influence by the history of the Hebrew people. Not that the Dwarves were Jews, of course, but once you understand Tolkien's thinking you can see a lot of parallels.)

Yet, we see a lot of Hebraic inspiration for Numenor, as well. Adunaic is based off of Hebrew, there’s a holy mount where the high priest goes up to speak to God and so on. I’m curious what other peoples or aspects were influenced by the stories of the Israelites and Hebrew faith.

7:35 In Fellowship of the Ring an elf in Rivendell says he cannot tell what parts of a song were written by Bilbo and what parts were written by Aragorn. This is complicated because it turns out Bilbo wrote the whole song, but the way the elf speaks suggests he wouldn't have expected to be able to tell the difference between mortal writers even if there was one. He says plainly that elves don't spend much time considering mortals. So if they see the differences between a man and a hobbit as negligible they probably see the differences between breeds of dwarves as non-existent.

The conflict between the two races was also foretold by Ilúvatar himself, as dwarves were made by Aule before the coming of the elves, without the consent of the father of the Valar. Although the dwarves were not a creation of Ilúvatar, he accepted them eventually, but cast them to slumber until the coming of the Firstborn. Ilúvatar also said: *'I will awaken them, and they shall be to thee as children; and often strife shall arise between thine and mine, the children of my adoption and the children of my choice.'* Quenta Silmarillion, Chapter 2. This was also the reason why the dwarves were so different from elves both physically and in thinking, as they had a different creator, and they were made in a time of war with Melkor, thus the stocky build and such.

If I recall correctly, the Nauglamir was originally a gift to Finrod Felagund. It's not unreasonable for the dwarves of Nogrod to think Thingol had the Nauglamir pillaged from Nargothrond, so they used that accusation as an excuse to withhold the Nauglamir after the Silmaril was set into it, for they coveted the Silmaril. Hurin gave the Nauglamir to Thingol, and Morgoth freed Hurin from bondage in Angband. Ergo, Morgoth ruined the friendship between elves and dwarves.

Are you an Opera fan at all? Because huge swaths of that explanation sounded incredibly similar to Wagners interpretations of Norse myths for his Ring Cycle. Would love to see a video talking about how much he lifted from Wagner because I see it everywhere in the books. Love your stuff btw.

Tolkien's dwarves are likable, though, different than Wagner's, which reflected his antisemitism. I love the Ring Cycle but if it was a book I probably wouldn't like it. Tolkein's work has humor and good fellowship

@@dn5156 Add to that Wagner being such a narcissist that he famously decided to write his own libretto even though he had no idea how to do so, making his diologue some of the worst in all opera. So yeah, it would double suck as a book. The idea of turning the gold from the myth into a ring though, having it instantly inspire the greed for the giant to kill his own brother to have it (like Smeagol did), the dragon. It's just fun to see the connections between two stories I love. Totally agree Wagner was a terrible person though.

I thought there was an issue between the Noldo and the Longbeards of Khazad Dum when the Dwarves closed the doors of their mine when the Noldo of Eregion were fleeing from Sauron's troops in the second age, causing them to be trapped and slaughtered. I might have gotten some of the names wrong.

I think a fair portion of that theme, that is if I'm remembering correctly, come from Richard Wagners "The ring" which is heavily based around an old Germanic epic. Tolkien was trying to create a pseudo mythological pre history Europe and I think he did a damn good job. His expertise in his fields was put to good use as an author.

Unrelated to the video I have a question I hope you see. Do you think Frodo should have died in Mount Doom? His death was “prophesied” if I remember correctly a few times. Maybe I’ve been too much into Game of Thrones and their logic of characters’ deaths but it did make me think. Sort of like what Rowling did with Harry Potter who was also supposed to die in the end but she abandoned that idea for fan service. I don’t think Tolkien made Frodo live for fan service but maybe he meant to kill him off and then grew too attached to the character. It would definitely make it more of an ending with that sacrifice to put it simply, even though there is logic as to how he survived when he changed his mind, let go of the ring and reached out to Sam, but still it made me wonder a bit. I’m interested in what you think :)

If I’m not mistaken thranduil was born in doriath and his father might’ve witnessed the first destruction of doriath so his dislike of dwarves is understandable. The reason why thranduil has problems with the longbeards is because thror stole jewels that had belonged to thranduil’s late wife and tried to ransom them back to him.

I think the main reason there was so much tention betwine elves and dwarves was that of cultural differences and the fact that both elves and dwarves did not try to understand the other which then lead to many instances where they offended or did not understand each other. And when you think about theese two races mistreaded each other over and over for thousands of years no wonder they ended up disliking or even hating each other.

It was dual-fault. (And I am a dwarven enthusiast) The dwarves demanded double what they originally asked for and in response he offered them nothing. If the elf had stuck to original payment agreement and not ordered them to leave with no payment or else be killed then it would have been the dwarves fully. That said it all started with a couple of bad eggs on both sides.

Notice the accent placing on “Ilúvatar” is above the “u”. That’s the stress marker. You need to ditch Martin Shaw’s Silmarillion pronunciation because it’s incorrect. I-LOO-vatar not Ilu-VA-tar. Just ask the Tolkien Professor. He went on a tangent about it a while back.
