Why did Tywin hate Rhaegar Targaryen and Princess Elia?

Tywin Lannister was one of the most formidable and interesting characters in George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" and HBO's "Game of Thrones," but Tywin Lannister was a monster.
Oberyn Martell believed that Tywin gave Gregor "The Mountain" Clegan an order to kill Rhaegar Targaryen's wife and children - Princess Elia of Dorne, Rhaenys Targaryen, and Aegon Targaryen - but Tywin denied some of that to Tyrion. What is the truth?

As Viserys prophesied of Lannusters " that man's pride has pride" and the Rains of Castemere found out there is no bottom to Tywins vengeance if his pride is wounded. Tywin knew how far the Mountains psychotic tendencies would go. Two monsters killed Rhagar's wife and children.

I think Tywin personally liked Rhaegar and would have preferred him to be King. His beef was with Aerys and since Rhaegar was already dead by the Trident... Well the kids needed to go away to secure House Lannister's spot in the new regime.

Him saying to Tyrion that he didn't give the order sounded more like his way of saying "i fucked up" without admitting that he made a mistake. Tywin certaintly wouldn't admit so meekly to a mistake, especially in front of his youngest son, so him just saying that was probably his way of slowly accepting that the past was finally catching up.

It's strange- they *did* have Armoury Lorch in the show, but elected to simplify & conflate his role- & give all three deaths to Clegane; in the books, he's the one rumoured to have killed the little Lord Tarbeck during Tywin's annihilation of the Reynes & Tarbecks - so he *_already_* had form for killing small children- & Gregor's reputation was already well established before he succeeded his father; his acts were supposedly 'kept quiet', but the man's *not* Roose Bolton (with his philosophy of 'a quiet land, a peaceful people')- & he's not a great lord with a philosophy of control & discretion, he's only a landed knight - there's no way word *wouldn't* have spread, _unless_ he had Tywin's direct protection; "the World of Ice & Fire" is written by a Lannister-friendly historian, after all - it's far from being an unbiased history, any more than 'Fire & Blood' is. It's not only hard, but **impossible** - to believe Tywin _didn't_ know what the outcome was going to be, of sending two such men after Rhaegar's children- it's easier to blame thoughtless & vicious lackeys 'exceeding their orders'- especially after they can't refute it, than admit the base truth that he was stung by Aerys' rejection of his proposal- & then irony of ironies; the girl he rejected as a bride for Jaime, then marries Rhaegar- it's impossible not to see cycles of spite moving to make this tragedy: he turns down the Princess of Dorne's proposal- Aerys then rejects _his_ - & *_then_* , then Elia's married to Rhaegar...?

I never thought about like that, Twin hating ellia , this is a good perspective because Tywin was easily wounded when it came to his pride and felt like someone was slighting him and his House but he knew ellia wasn't at fault for Aerys rejecting the betrothal between Cersei and Rhaegar, he was just jealous because he always wanted Cersei to be Queen but damn why would it have been so bad if he just gave his daughter to a wealthy Lord?! Tywin is just a hateful and greedy man. He's good at strategy and playing the game of thrones but I didn't like certain things he did like ordering the Mountain to kill Ellias children just to show loyalty to Robert.

Tywin knew exactly what he was doing. Tywin is smart, such a tyrannical mind, built for warfare. He would have known that they could have taken them prisoner, at least Elia, as House Lannister could have gained favor with Dorne for saving Elia from the rebellion and the beast that was Robert. There were MANY ways he could have gone about this, yet he commanded the Mountain to kill each and every one of them. Why? He had no loyalty to Dorne and he had ZERO love for Rhaegar. It was to send a subliminal message, and he knew exactly what he was doing.

A funny consequence of all this, is that this also strengthens the Fageon theory since this act was so out of left field for Tywin due to how stupid it is (Making an enemy out of the entirety of Dorne just cause he had a personal grudge) that Varys couldn't have possibly known Tywin would do this (Unless Varys like the reader also knew that as it turns out Tywins act is a front and a facade, which, I could see him knowing a it of that, but not enough to confidently go "Aha, clearly Tywin is actually a very emotional person who would be willing to doom his entire family to face the wrath of Dorne, the people who Aegon the conqueror himself couldn't put down, just cause he had some beef, so time to save Aegon.... and no one else (Yeah another detail that makes this false is that Varys for some reason only switched Aegon and not Rhayners, which was odd, why would he only save one if he had that little trouble saving one that he could have saved both?)", which, while Tywin did do, it's something that only the readers could pick up, and even then not many could pick it up without help of OTHER readers, so figuring this out in universe must have been down right impossible, cause Tywin made sure the facade was that hard to tell) and thus also couldn't have possibly switched the babies to rescue Aegon

Tywin did bad things, that’s why he was easy to frame. The Kingsguard killed Elia, Septa Lemore’s son, and Rhaenys’ lady in waiting; not Gregor, hence Gregor’s confusion. The only reason he said it was spite before killing Oberon. In the next book, Gregor will be sent to kill Bronn, Lollys, Tyrion Tanner, and Tyrion Lannister; he will fail to kill the Tyrions, Lannister isn’t even there, and Lollys, probably Bronn too as they fall of some sort of ledge (Re: Dreadstar Oedi vs. Teuton). This will hint that he didn’t kill the Targaryens as well, Tywin was just taking credit like Faceless Men do when they “kill” people that died through other means.

@@DukeJimbob she was not. Tywin brought up the match and Aerys insulted him. Aerys would rather marry Rhaegar to a foreigner with Valryian blood. Yes he wanted noble pure valerian blood. But steffon failed. But Elia is a distant off spring of valerian targ blood but most importantly she had the title princess. He was after that as well. The help don’t have the title princess. Targs always married Martels. But most importantly Aerys may be mad but he isn’t stupid nor dumb. He wasn’t letting Lannisters and their pride, especially Tywin near the iron phone. In all recorded history king Robert was the only person who did that. Allowed them at the center of power so they can do what they are doing in the books presently. Only read the books once, and correct me if I am wrong but no major house like hightowers, Martel, stark of Tully etc every married any Lannisters. Too prideful and they are like cooperate raiders/vultures. Only hoster Tully considered marrying his second daughter to a Lannister. Not his first and that says something.

I'm surprised, too- that so few marriages were considered between Great Houses before the Targ era, & even after it - I wonder why...?

@@OcarinaSapphr-Before the Targeryan era, seven kingdoms were in constant war with each other, trying to increase their own power, and saw their neighbours as enemies. Not suprised that when High Houses were kings, there weren't any marriages between these warring kings. Afterwards, there was peace because everyone feared the dragons, and everyone wanted in on the dragon blood. Otherwise the High Houses were strengthening their own grip on their own kingdoms, by marrying vassals and distant relatives, to avoid creating competing bloodlines withing their own borders.

Tywin detested Prince Rhaegar because of Arys refusing to wed his son to Cersei and he despised Ellia due to her mother having gone over his head to get Ellia wed to Rhaegar after Lord Tywin insulted her by suggesting the princess marry her daughter to Tyrion. He also knew Ellia's kids would always be a threat because they were heirs to the throne, so he sent in The Mountain to kill them and get rid of any rivals who could challenge his own family's future claim to the iron throne. He then went on to marry Cersei off to Robert in the hopes that his descendants would eventually rule Westeros. It's an age-old tactic. Take over by breeding with your rivals and enemies until any/all traces of them have been erased and your own bloodline is all that remains. Tywin wed his own first cousin and would have pushed for the heirs to marry his own distant relatives until Lannister was the surname of the royal family. That's what he meant when he told Jaime their family could create a dynasty that would last a thousand years. Tywin needed Jaime to marry so Jaime's kids could go on to marry Cersei's grandchildren, further his own legacy, and then fulfill his plans to rule the seven kingdoms.

This was an excellent video. The thing I always hated most about Tywin was that although he vehemently maintained the image that he was above loose behavior, sex crimes, or even normal urges as a man, all the while it was probably his who built the underground tunnel from the hand’s chambers to the brothel where Tyrion meets with Varys; he has absolutely ordered rapes (like you pointed out very clearly with Tysha and firmly insisting that Tyrion rape Sansa if she won’t have him willingly, not to mention all the other instances like participating in whoring in the towers of the hand, and allowing Gregor to do whatever he liked, knowing FULL well, no matter what he claims otherwise, what type of monster he was using to do his bidding.)

A princess of Dorne wouldn't have been a bad match for Jaime, even if not Tywin's first political choice. No matter -- Aerys tanked any marriage prospect by naming Jaime to the Kingsguard. That was the biggest insult to Tywin, aside from nixing Cersei's potential betrothal to Rhaegar. Aerys originally wanted a Lyseni bride for Rhaegar, and the failed mission to find one cost Steffon Baratheon his life. So Robert likely hated his Targaryen kinfolk long before the tourney at Harrenhal. The Targaryens sure have played the "marry, f*ck, kill" game with intensity over their history.

It's a closely guarded secret that Jaime joined the Kingsguard at *Cersei's* instigation- because she wanted to prevent him marrying Lysa Tully, & even married to Rhaegar (as she was hoping), she wanted Jaime close - _however_ , when Aerys refused Tywin- he resigned & dragged Cersei home {it's essentially early proof of how short-sighted she is}- having no choice but to leave Jaime in the Capitol...

He did refuse a match between Elia & Jaime/ Oberyn & Cersei - they & their mother (a close friend of Joanna at Court) came to visit- but Joanna's death, birthing Tyrion made him even more of an arsehole- grief aside. It's possible that the Princess- herself now slighted by Tywin's rudeness & refusal to honour his late wife's wishes, took on some old fashioned Dornish-style spite of her own- to then connive Elia's marriage to Rhaegar, after Steffon failed to find a suitable Valyrian-descendant bride in Lys or Volantis... Seems like a lot of sad irony going around...
