NOTE: I know the background music is too loud, but unfortunately, I can't do anything about it unless I take it down and upload it again. Sorry!
In this video, I analyse psychology and mythology of Cersei Lannister, one of the best-written villains in fiction. Selfish and full of self-conceit, this mother of three and manipulative queen hides much more beneath than she shows. It was difficult to make a short video (it's long now and I still find it short in regards to the coverage of the depth of this character), but I tried my best to present you with the most relevant information. I discuss Cersei's personality, background, relationships, the Terrible Mother archetype, and mythological parallels.

Thank you very much for your support! I have reached my first 1K subscribers recently, and I hope that our little community will keep expanding. I have a great many ideas to present you with and an even greater number of topics and characters I would like to cover. My Patreon is active now, but I'm only hoping to bring you special Patreon content in the future at this stage; in the meantime, you can support me by subscribing, hitting the bell button, and liking the videos, of course, or buying me a coffee here: www.buymeacoffee.com/fictionpsyche ( (it would be more likely a book in my case, though, so that I can keep learning more and thus bring you more interesting content :). I'm also always trying to make sure to read all of your comments, which I appreciate a lot, because it's your feedback what leads me towards improvement and keeps me going. I aim to respond always, but it might take me a while sometimes! Love you all! X

Now that you say, I haven’t read the books but apparently Jaime and Loras had an ongoing feud similar but more intense to the shows, one of the reasons being that their personality clashed due Loras bring “a young Jaime” so your theory makes a lot of sense. Especially since it’s the women of the Tyrell family who seem to be engaged in the politics and have a firm hand sth Cersei always wanted but was never ever to archive because of her strict father.

That's because Margaery: 1) has the guidance of her grandmother, the queen of thorns and has been taught to exert power in a 'feminine' way since very little which means presenting yourself as kind, loyal, well-spoken and gentle as well as influencing your king and opening the doors for the family to occupy important military and political positions rather than sitting on the iron throne herself. 2) Cersei fails terribly at that, she didn't have a female guide who'd teach her the ways of feminine Westerosi political manuevering thus failing as a 'woman' AND lacks the intelligence and competence to assert decisions herself like Tywin, a man, would do which leads her to also failing as a 'man'; maybe you can say it's because no one taught her 'how to rule' but that would diminish the efforts of people like Tyrion who is a great politician and was never taught anything, he learned and read and studied what failed and worked so he could implement that into his use of power. Cersei never sees the bigger picture, constantly surrounding herself with yes-men and questionable characters, foolishly blinding herself to the facts. Putting all the blame on her would be too simple though, a lot of factors doomed her. Tywin was a cunt who only saw her as a pawn, Robert was a cunt for repeteadly mistreating and raping her, Maggi the frog was a cunt for her prophecy and also Jaime is kind of a cunt for not rescuing her at the end of AFFC. Sigh, I really like her messy ass and honestly hope for, at least, an epic death lol.

Margaery is a master manipulator just like Cersei. The only difference is that Margaery is charismatic. Remember that she only "has a love for the common people" because she knows it will make her look good to them. She does genuinely care about her family, though.

@@teamblack204 well the show started making big changes with season 2 and Qarth. ACOK Dany was smart and learned that people like Xaro were using her just to get her Dragons. Someone who cares about her people and will not abandon them because it’s hard. Show Dany from season 2 onwards became Emile Clark the actor in a Dany costume. David B straight up admits this in interviews of how they “changes the character to just the actor.” Almost anyone who didn’t die off in season 1 on the show had this treatment. Tywin becomes friendly, Robb becomes a romantic, Tyrion becomes a parody, Cersei acts motherly, etc...

This was incredible! Given her mother’s role in separating her & Jaime as children, I wouldn’t be surprised if she were subconsciously grateful for her mother’s early death- however, given how beloved & idealised Joanna was- she was *never* going to be able to articulate that. I’ve always thought that she really only loves people as extensions of herself- she largely disregards Tommen until he’s elevated to kingship, & tries to control him- but her lack of respect for his position only weakens the power of the crown- Joffrey’s spoiled & cosseted, because she wanted to keep him for her (another way to control/ isolating him from his ‘father’) - even though he often sought Robert’s approval. I don’t see that we have much idea of her feelings for her only daughter; as a physical mirror, she loves her- I get what you say about her feeling because she can’t use Myrcella directly for power, she matters less- but I have had the theory for a while, that *_Cersei_* - directly or indirectly, will be responsible for her daughter’s death in the books. I see it going one of two ways; either she _accidentally_ kills her trying to kill Arianne/ the Sand Snakes, *_or_* having done away with the former, she will slowly come to think Myrcella is the ‘younger Queen’- wether she subconsciously understands that the action brings the prophecy closer to fulfillment- & thus her death closer, or not- her ego & paranoia is such that she cannot lose, not in any way- not even to her own child - & she sacrifices Myrcella, & then tries to draw Tommen ever-closer- perhaps thinking if she keeps him safe, she too, will endure - but I think the show did manage a good interpretation of how that will go - while protective, she’s also reckless & careless; when she’s met with ‘defiance’ or ‘dissent’, she lashes out... - & the loss of her final child will drive her to claim ultimate power in her own right, regardless of whether she has a right to it, or not - while the later show didn’t really accurately show the inner workings of the Court, the way the book & earlier show did- there were signs of how repressive it would be under her regime... Sorry for the rambling- just my thoughts... Edit: missed a word

Cersei is an true narcissist, so much so that it’s questionable whether or not she really loved Jaime, or her children. In the books, her and Jaime are described as being mirror images of each other, and she claims the only time she feels whole is when her and Jaime are intimate. It’s probably not the idea of sleeping with Jaime that she loves, but rather the idea of her sleeping with herself. As far as her children go, it’s possible that she may only love them because she sees them as an extension of herself, and her Jaime (herself).

I don't agree with Daenerys being mature but I haven't read the books yet either. I'm waiting for George R.R. Martin to finish writing them before I read them. How is Daenerys portrayed in the books? Is she portrayed differently than the show? When you answer that question don't even bother discussing seasons 7 & 8. I think we can all agree that those seasons were atrocities. Also, thank you for always trying to take time to respond to everyone's comments. I know I always enjoy reading your answers to my questions.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, would you do a video on Jaime Lannister? I love your vids and am very curious what your angle on him would be. He’s my favorite ASOIAF character. Or perhaps a video on their sibling/twin bond? Anything! 😊 Thank you.

Cersei’s ownership of Kings Landing makes me laugh, the continual reference to the smell/presence of pig sh:+ is too amusing in its irony for grrm to have not taken influence from the Odyssey

Danny committed genocidal cleansing in Kings Landing and elsewhere, had a distorted self image, seeing herself as a Queen and conquerer instead of a politician, which reflected her unconscious need to exercise prerogative power, power without constraint. Cersi, Sansa, Daenerys -- three expressions of an unexamined will to power. Catelyn had a legitimate reason for her fateful mistakes. But her mistakes furthered the war of the 5 Kings for which there can be no forgiveness. The women of the GoT world were no better than their male counterparts. The lot of them, both male and female, brought misery and death with them. We're no better today.

This video made me think about something, Cersei in the books was described as the most beautiful woman in Westeros by alot of the characters but it was women like Lyanna and Catelyn that bought out the madness is men. Lyanna had a war started for her by two of the men Cersei wanted. Petyr foolishly dueled Brandon Stark for Cats hand and almost died. Then he schemed his way into positions to be good enough for her and intentionally caused a war. Ned ended up falling in love with her.

I have been watching Breaking Bad (10 years after every other person on earth). I feel like Walter White and Cersei are very similar characters. The paranoia, perfectionism, aggression and need to ”protect my family” that ends up causing so much harm to the family.

Back in the day, when GRRM talked about his characters, i've always been astonished about all this female interviewers who praised him for the creation of such a "strong woman" like Cersei Lannister. Back then I just thought: "This is just a fear- and spitefull little girl in a womans body. How can't anybody see that? Cersei is what Arya may become if she follows her way of hate to the end."

Nice video! Interesting accent. It sounds RP english but with a heavy Flemish or dutch flavour to it. Something about the pronunciation of the word "o" and the emphasis on the consonants at the end of words. More clipped. Sorry; accents fascinate me.

its always weird when a psychologist attempts to understand someone in power when they have never been in power themselves. They don't know the cost, they don't know the upkeep, and they don't understand what, to them, is antisocial personality disorder, is actually the only way you can complete and survive when everyone is out to take from you at the first sign of weakness. BTW. those same people who subject themselves to that are the only reason we are here typing on youtube.

When you say things like " Cersei finds other women stupid and whores" Being as other women were subjected to being 2nd class citizens at best, were often whores, and often were not well-read. WHAT ELSE WOULD SHE THINK?. You are applying today's moral view into a fantasy world that does not fit at all.

saying danerys is the most mature one when she is the one that did nothing but send generations of slaves and warriors to death over absolutely nothing other than a contrived dragon attachment and a feeling she knows better than everyone else because she had sex with a guy is utterly foolish. You should maybe swap out how you feel about yourself in regards to the three.

Cersei strikes me as having Boderline Personality Disorder but I don't see major narcissism. Often people with BPD come across as narcissists when they're not. I just feel like she felt it was her and her children against the world.

Cersei is a very misunderstood character. She isn't a loving "mother bear" protecting her lion cubs. If she was, she would have bent over backward to have Margery Tyrell killed and the Tyrells agrivated, and the entire alliance ruined. This was the alliance that saved her children. If she did care about her children, she would have never done any of that. What she really is is a completely selfish, viscious, evil, and irredeemable person. It's all for her ego and herself. She's a bottomless pit of cruelty. The walk of shame she had in the books was so unbelievably satisfying.

Mostly her father. As great and mighty a ruler as Tywin was he is easily one of the most callous men in Westeros. His domineering, cloak and dagger methods and callous pragmatism bled well over onto Cersei and Joffrey. Many people are so desperate to hate Joffrey whilst cutting out like 90% of the context as to why he's so awful.
