Most know you should be able to get better performance from a DIY sub or even just an ugly sub that is usually meant for behind the screen placement than a sub that is good performance and great looking! So yes there are places for the JTR and DIY subs, but isn't the same true of the Perlisten's of the world? Or is everyone out there a go big or go home, brute method of sub woofer approach? Let us know what you think in the comments! And keep an eye out for the Daily HiFi merch that is coming soon!

Totally on point with this one guys ~ you will not notice a difference between the SVS and perlisten in a normal size room. The issue I take with Shane, I had a lengthy debate with him about this is that bigger subs = better or that you will notice a difference in the sub 20hz range even though mixing engineers aren’t utilizing or aware of utilizing anything below 20hz. If he wants to buy them , fine, he just needs to stop pushing the narrative. Also his take on multi sub is obnoxious

main problem is that there aren’t many pre build and finished subs bigger than 15 inch (especially in Europe). If you want a 18 inch or 21 inch your only choice is DIY.

On the other hand, who really needs 18 or 21? I mean, seriously. Take the new Klipsch RP1600SW, with its 1.6 kilowatt amp peak, a massively long throw woofer etc. It digs down to like 14 hz with ludicrous SPL numbers. I mean if you're building an actual cinema maybe but I can't imagine any even slightly reasonably sized home would require more than a pair of those. Or indeed a pair of SVS PB 16 Ultras that are in roughly the same ballpark, performance wise. Hell, forget a pair, a solo one would be pretty wild.

@@KimmoJaskari It all depends on the required output and the size of the room. To pressurize living rooms bigger than 100m^2 you just need big subwoofers. Even the best 15" subs like the Perlisten D215s (which hits 106.2dB at 20Hz according to audioholics burst test) cannot compete with good 18" builds (which can easily get up to 120+ dB flat down to 15Hz). Especially home theatre guys will apprechiate the high output in that frequency range. A normal sized home will probably not need that but it's nice to have some headroom. The price difference between 15" and 18" DIY kits isn't that large either (with the Dayton kits it's just 150€ more) so going for the bigger one is easier to justify for DIYers.

I've always wanted a pair of SVS PB16 Ultra's, however my wallet wouldn't let me and my wife almost put her foot up my.....HELLO.....when i told her what the cost would be for a pair of them. I instead built a pair GSG 18' Marty Cubes. Yes it took a little time to complete but it sounds fantastic compared to the pair of 12' Polk HTS' I used to own. So, the cost all in with both GSG kits both subs,(Dual Dayton Ultimax UM18-22 18' subs), A Crown XLS 2502 amp, and everything purchases to build, sand and paint (including DA polisher and DA sander and all clamps...thank god for Harbor Freight) I spent a little over $2100. Build time took me about 3 weeks, but that's because my work hours are crazy and changes all the time. Now my only issue is trying to figure out how to stop sh*t from falling off the walls. 🤣

Monolith 16" THX Ultra Sub $2,069 vs. Perlisten D15s $5,995...both are great but why not go with the Monolith and save $4,000 unless money is no object!

The new Klipsch RP1600SW with the all new design, all new amp and all new ultra long throw woofer... honestly, that thing looks like an absolute monstrosity and costs in the $2 grand ballpark as well. The new RP sub lineup also has 10, 12 and 14 inch options, and they all look incredibly capable. Might be that Klipsch finally decided to stop phoning it in and put their subs into high gear at last.

I thought about buying a pair of SVS SB 2000s, the non-Pro variant (trying to keep costs reasonable, and SVS in Europe are not priced in a reasonable fashion). Then I saw how they looked and I decided I didn't want SVS after all. What I did wind up with was a pair of hand-made BK Electronics out of the UK, sealed, downward-firing and with actual lighter wood veneer on them. I expect them to look great; currently waiting for the pair, they're in shipping. And I paid less for a pair of those 12-inch sealed models than I would for previous gen SVS. Will they outperform an SB 2000? I don't know, but they're certainly in the ballpark, slightly larger physically, and use (I believe) the same driver the original SB 2000 had a modified variant of (a Peerless element). Buying without a demo is always a bit fraught, but I'll be shocked if they don't shake my house. Sure, I had to wait a couple of weeks - because they built them when I ordered them. I think that's just so cool. And I had my choice of veneers - hell, I might have been able to talk them into a custom finish if need be, but they already have all the usual suspects for veneers.

JTR being ugly is a myth. Why do these “experts” ignore that they offer custom finishes for $300 extra?

With Channa's point about the Perlisten sub he got for review being as good as dual SVS 3000 subs, wouldn't you be better going dual subs due to the seat to seat consistency. If it's just one seat you care about, by all means.
@KimmoJaskari
@KimmoJaskari Жыл бұрын
About 3 db more headroom with dual subs, so not a ton but some - and yeah, consistency. It can actually help even a single seat listener to even up the bass especially if (as is often the case) the place to put the sub cannot be done to perfection. Two subs can help even it out in the prime listening position also. Downside is that dialing in two subs is very tricky. Sure, you can just plonk them down and pray, but what you really need is to spend time with instrumentation and get it right, using something like multi-sub optimizer.
