Lyle, another great video as usual. I did not realize that any injection molded components were made in China. Regardless, since we stopped racing, and no longer get parts at great discounts, I expect to pay a premium for good aftermarket parts.

It’s not the cost. I own a 2007 C6 convertible. Most of these innocuous parts are unobtainium. Needed a ‘top closed” switch sensor replacement. It’s not made anymore. No aftermarket support. Junk yard find only. And they know what they have.

Your right. I needed a new fuel tank and got super lucky GM was still making them for the C6.

Even on the OEM end of Corvette parts you can sometimes do a cross reference to see if the part your looking for was used on some other GM vehicles and check the price for say a Chevy Caprice VS a Corvette. Most dealers will list the Corvette much higher. This generally applies to engine parts and driveline stuff not the Corvette specific stuff. The reason why the OEM Corvette specific stuff cost so much is the cost amortization is spread out over far less vehicles. The R&D and tooling for a million door handles spread out is pennies where 30K will it be dollars per article.

Makes sense to me. I just got my ABS unit replaced. It wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t cheap by any means. 😅 Having a Corvette is a hobby. The manufacturers know this and will also mark up a little more, just in case. 😉 😅😢 Happy Corvette Friday everyone. 🎉

I have a C4 that I recently bought a gas tank lid emblem for more than 30 and less than 40 dollars. It broke when I opened the lid. It is a "beater" vette that runs like you wouldn't believe because I bought it from a mechanic that concentrated on the engine. It has multiple cosmetic challenges but if I could get a few key operational problems resolved, I wouldn't care about the multiple bodywork issues. I realize it's a 30+ year old car but it is so much fun to drive.

I do not consider Corvette parts to be expensive. They are cheap compared to any import like Audi, BMW, Mercedes, etc....parts. And if you consider Ferraris, Porsches or Lamborghinis then the difference is insane. So GM is not filling its pockets selling Corvette parts.

In the 70s, I had a friend who worked at a large VW-Porsche-Audi dealership. There were 3 parts schedules according to vehicle line. The same set of ignition points would cost you more as you went up the divisions. Even Mercedes Benz used the same ignition points as the Beetle.

Thanks Lyle! Always good content and appreciated 👍 I will say this, latches, bezels, escutcheons are one thing… but REAL OEM parts such as brake calipers, rotors, engine parts. Advice from my mechanic is NO commie parts! Why? Always lower quality and crap for reliability. It’s true Delco parts are made a lot in Mexico but GM controls the spec and quality.

We have a 2014 Corvette Stingray 2LT. We’ve been looking to upgrade the interior components and swap them into carbon fiber and get rid of some of the plastic that’s inside. It will cost a small fortune to replace the window switches instrument cluster bezel center console bezel, and steering wheel. It’s over $2000 to upgrade.

The difficult part is also finding the automaker and vehicle cross reference information for "common" parts used across the automotive industry. Such as, a master slave cylinder for a Gen 2 Dodge Viper that, outside of the quick disconnect line that can be swapped via a roll pin, shares the exact same part number as the '90's Ford F250's.

I work in the auto parts industry and Corvette parts really are not that expensive. Example us if you want to replace a OEM Mazda CX9 headlight you could be paying up to $6500 Australian dollars for that headlight! Or a windscreen that costs $2800 before it is even installed or had its ADAS system calibrated!

Whatever happened to the Red C4 that wasn’t running well and owner had stored in his garage for several years before bringing it to C&S! Your shop took it on with no promises, but preliminary inspection showed no signs of the problem!! Just curious for an update. Previously owned a ‘96 CE and really enjoyed it. Bob

Question - I have two original corvette doors from 1978 to 1982. Can you let me know how I'd know how much these would be worth? They are not in the bet condition, and I can send in pictures. My father passed away, and I am trying to decide if they are worth paying to ship across country as I am emptying out my parents house. Ps, I know they are original b/c my father owns a 1965 corvette and he used to do a lot of car shows. Be bought the doors in the 90s and they've been in the garage for more than 20 years.

They key will be determining how much rust is present and how many little ouchies the fiberglass has. Excellent doors are worth about $850 each with everything in them and no rust/damage, but the price drops dramatically once you start having to repair all of the imperfections these doors collect in storage. I was quoted the other day $2500 to do a rear main real on my 69 390 horse local (corvette repair shop). Why do we pay more at corvette repair shops then regular car repair shops. At a very good named regular repair shop i was quotes $900-$1000 for the same repair. Don't get it?
@marduk2672

Does the 2500 give a better warranty than the 1000? I would take that into consideration.
@csvette
@csvette 3 ай бұрын
David, I think that quote is particularly high. My guess is that the shop wasn't really wanting the job and were pricing it as such. Working on 50+ year old cars certainly has its own set of challenges, but a rear main seal job shouldn't cost that much. Lyle

This Video looks pretty strenge, for a Guy like me from Germany 😂 Because Car Parts in Germany are expencive like Hell. Oh, and i dont mean Porsche or Mercedes Parts. No, Parts for a crappy VW cost more than for a Corvette. When i had my Corvette New, and i searched Lambda Sensors for the first time. I found 2 Lambda Sensors on Rock Auto for 44$. To be serious, at this time i never heard about Rock Auto. So i was thinking, this is a Scam. You send the Money, and never See anything. Car Parts in USA, Corvette or not have a very fair Prize, in comparsion to German Car Parts. In Germany you pay for those 2 Lambda Sensors 200$. And when you buy them strait from a GM Dealer maybe 350$. Just for example 😉

Porsche is a world unto itself. Many of the Corvette people we help here are driving $10-$25K cars because that is what they can afford. Very few people "accidentally" fall into Porsche ownership...most Porsche people are very serious drivers with equally serious financial means available to them. They expect to pay serious money for everything to do with that car...and it is usually worth it. Granted, you have the folks buying 20 year old Boxsters on FB Marketplace, having no idea what they are getting into...but mostly Porsche owners know what they are in for expense-wise. Lyle :)
