Exactly it's not that she refused him. It's how she did it.

Thank you for this video! Ser Criston is a really complex character and also one of my favourites, so I felt bad seeing people reducing to simply "an incel". That's like reducing Rhaenyra to "a brat" or Alicent to "a Karen".

The dude gave into temptation (literally any dude here would have, especially the idiots crying, 'incel', only instead of hurt feelings, he broke his word and risked execution and torture. So yeah, what was it all for? Situation is just a little different than 20fucking23 where the comment section is plagued with zoomers who can't dedicated 10 minutes to something productive before taking a break for a tiktok video. Fuckin kids have no perspective lol.

It's interesting, because to me while Cole may have been attracted to Rhaenyra, but i don't think he every wanted to break his vow. I find their sex scene extremely hard to watch because he seems so conflicted and Rhaenyra doesn't seem to see or respect that at all. Not only does he highly value his honour and knighthood as a commoner, but it would also be a grizzly death sentence as he himself admits. People have said that she doesn't have power over him, it wasn't coercive, and he couldve said no, which is all blatantly false. She's a princess, and while he's a king's guard, he's a commoner sworn to serve him. He actually says stop in the beginning and doesn't reciprocate in the beginning. The proposal came across to me as someone who's desperately built up a romantic fantasy for himself in order to justify to himself what was essentially assualt. He seems to be trying to make it okay to himself, because its not so bad if they're in love and if they run away and get married. And then Rhaenyra rips down that fantasy and wants to continue to use him. I find that so tragic, and after diving deeper into analysing his character he's slowly moved up to be one of my favourites.

The double standard against Cole and the benefit of the doubt for Rhaenyra, by the fandom, is baffling. Rhaenyra whinges repeatedly about her duties to Criston and literally runs from them ('it is because nobody has ever held my position' episode 3, when Cole reminds her she is so otherworldly privileged compared to 99% of the population) then sexually coerces the same Criston despite his verbal refusal and initial unwillingness to participate despite Rhaenyra locking him in, kissing him twice, undressing herself and him, only to then throw those same duties she ignored and complained about right in Cole's face ('I may chafe at my duties' episode 5) the moment she's just ruined him and pushed him to break his vows for nothing but her immediate gratification, not even a real relationship. Rhaenyra can turn him into a sidepiece, her fling on a string, at the absolute expense of his oaths, his honour, risking him being gelded, tortured and executed, and out of utter last resort desperation he proposes an admittedly silly offer to escape and this is what people focus on to vilify him? Rhaenyra had a massive hand in selfishly ruining Cole just to get herself off (of course, after being spitefully used by Daemon) and Cole turning against her is one of the biggest examples of her immaturity and self-centredness exploding.

Rhaenyra even said, she doesn't mind the way they are currently at that moment, this relationship where Criston is not even a lover, just a man-whore of Rhaenyra. That feeling of being betrayed, played with sure does destroy his self-respect, and makes many of his action quite undestandable.

The fact is that Ser Criston wanted to run away WITH Rhaenyra, not without her. The alternative option she offered might not have been particularly ideal in his mind but was certainly better than nothing. I believe it’s possible Rhaenyra had genuine feelings for him, that his love for her wasn’t one-sided. In my opinion if she saw him as just a plaything and not someone she truly had feelings for, she never would’ve offered for him to continue to be her paramour. Also one more point to add, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen a Kingsguard break his vows, because as we all know Jaime Lannister did the same thing. Chronologically speaking that happened much later, after Ser Criston’s time, but still.

Beyond the love, he’s also just really ashamed of breaking his vows as a Kingsguard, so for him to stay as a Kingsguard while being her lover as he puts it is being “her whore”, which is a far more dishonourable outcome in his mind. The actor Fabien states that she could have offered him a way out of the Kingsguard, I think this would be the best alternative.

@@meterod I don’t disagree and you’re right, Rhaenyra could’ve offered Ser Criston a way out of the Kingsguard. At the same time, he already broke his oath to begin with so realistically, there wasn’t much left for him to lose (except his life if the wrong people had found out). From my point of view, there are two things Ser Criston failed to realize: 1. At this point he had already broken his vows, and he feels like he has no honor left but if that’s the case, then he couldn’t possibly dishonor himself any further. 2. Sometimes in order to be happy, including being together with the ones we love, compromise is necessary and he didn’t see that.

@@alexanderkuechler1782 Yeah, he was very one sided and inconsiderate of her own perspective. But like I said, vows and honor were a huge deal back then so we can’t possibly imagine how serious it was from his perspective. I don’t like the argument that just because he broke his vows once means he should just break them all the time and not have any more consideration for his duties, obviously what he did was bad, but he recognizes that, and believes that being her lover while a Kingsguard is even worse. Ultimately the main point of the video was to give a side to Criston’s perspective since a lot of the fan base is just blindly hating on him.

@@meterod I totally see where you’re coming from and you’re right about fans blindly hating him. For those who saw the trailer, we all knew there would be a fight at the wedding and that Ser Criston was involved but nonetheless I was shocked by what he did. I understand your point of view and why he lashed out but it was gruesome, to be sure.

it's cool how in the mane series jaime mentioned ser Criston while saying that while there are the best and the worst kingsguards and than there is ser Criston who is both the best and the worst of them at the same time.

Rhaenyra did what she had to do, if they got married a heiress and a commoner it wouldn't work out or end good, not mentioning Viserys I but it would be a huge problem, *Spoiler* in the next episodes she will marry a velaryon prince which also proves the point she can't marry a commoner.

This isn't about whether she was right to spurn him or not, it is an understanding of why Criston reacted so harshly to the rejection and ended up doing what he did.

Criston’s delusional bro. The whole thing was about his pride/ego. Because he broke his vows he felt the situation could only be rectified if Rhaenyra gave up everything else as well. They would both be living in disgrace together. They would never work on the outside and would probably just grow to resent each other.

@@Anne_one He offered to marry her to regain his honor because he thought she loved him. Ok, let's reverse thr situation. A man gives an impoverished but capable employee a position then pressured that woman to have sex with him. Now, to regain her honor, she asked the man to marry her but he proposed for her to be his mistress instead. Do we call the woman "delusional"? Does it appeal more to your modern sensibilities that the roles are reversed? Im sure modern feminists would take their pitchforks to condemn the said man and yet people are applauding Rheanyra for being a forward feminist even though she just did the same. It tells you more about the indoctrination of western women.

let's be honest, Rhaenyra raped him. If a King or Queen or Prince or Princess comes up to one of their servants and is sexually aggressive, the servant has no power and there is this fear not knowing how you will be punished if you deny their advances. So yes, Rhaenyra raped him because he didn't want to, and then she didn't even care that she tarnished the only thing he ever cared about - his white cloak. It's understandable because she did all these horrible things when she was a teenager so she is still immature. But it is striking to see so many people watching the show side with Rhaenyra and justify her behavior. Makes me think they have the same level of immaturity.

And his head would have been on the chopping blocks if he fully denied her as she is the princess and heir to the throne, he said no but she was persistent, then he gave in seeing the consequences if he denied the princess and in doing so he lost the things that was attached to his name which are his honor, vows, and cloak.

Same can be said about Rhaenyra multiple times. A. Swore on her mother's name about nothing happening between her and daemon B. Keeping her marriage vows C. Lying about the bastardy of her children D. Lying about lukevs claim about driftmark E. Lying to her children about their paternity. Before Luke's death, she told Luke he's a baratheon thru rhaenys. So I guess, she cant be trusted 5x over

The problem with Rhaenyra is that she doesn't actually want to change things for women, just for herself. She sometimes talks, but takes no action in that direction. In the book she is not concerned with the common people as well, she is called Maegor with teats, after her great grandfather Maegor the cruel. She is a narcissist in the making: selfish, uncaring, no actual empathy, loving her children, because they are an extension of herself, charming, no accountability. They even show her using gaslighting in the scene where Aemond lost his eye, manipulating to dodge accountability and attacking, by asking to have a 10 year old t0rtured. Question sharply means t0rture in asoiaf universe. That's why the Queen looses it. She shows no empathy to a mutilated child. In the scene where Vaemond is killed by Daemon she nods to him, before he kills him. Then there is blood and cheese and so much more, but I won't spoiler that. Fact is she is written as a character with at least narcissitic traits. I don't know how far they go in the show. But she wasn't named after Maegor the Cruel for nothing. And if you pay attention it is all there already.
